Originally by: Dr Slaughter 1. He could EASILY have physically restrained her without using the tazer. 2. He didn't ask her to step away from the traffic or try to discuss what she needed to do in a friendly manner.
He basically pushed her about, repeatedly ordered her around, and then physically assaulted her with something that could easily have killed her (old people often have pacemakers and heart conditions).
Frankly he should have simply:
a. asked (not ordered) her to move away from the road so they could talk safely, b. respectfully asked her to sign the document so they could both be on their way.
The bloke was a total *****.
Your right, he should have physically restrained her, possibly killing her in the process. Old lady's don't fall and break there hip, they break ther hip and then fall. |

We loved it.
She finally got caught. The cop looked in the car, shook his head, wrote her a ticket for speeding, and let her go.
That's back when people were free and could do stupid stuff without being tazed.
Dollars to donuts that f your Grandma had refused to accept the ticket, she would have been arrested, and the car towed, just like happened to this old lady.
They didn't have tazers in those days. He would have had to put her in a headlock until she passed out. While he was doing that he would have had to fight off 6 to 8 kids that hadn't yet learned biting wasn't an acceptable way to solve problems.

If he had not tazed her then he may have need to chase her, in which case she could have run off into the traffic and get hit by a car.
Every person in traffic is at risk and streets are a dangerous place. This is why we have the controls. If you are not fit for traffic then you need to stay out of it. That is what this is about. From the speeding ticket to pushing granny off the road was this all meant to keep everyone from harm. If stupid granny then thinks she needs an extra special treatment by arguing and wrestling with a cop, next to heavy traffic, than she needs to be taken down and for her own good.
Everyone survived and no one got injured, because the cop did not stop to follow procedures.
Do we now need geriatric nurses to patrol the streets and so every old bum can drive a car and have their heart attack behind the wheel rather than at home?
Other old folk return their driving license. What is it they know but granny does not? -- If there is anything in your life you fear of losing, then keep your mouth shut once in a while. |

It all comes down to risk, which is riskier, tasoring someone, or rolling around on pavement in heavy traffic?

Edited by: Cyprus Black on 13/06/2009 04:08:57 The deputy did the right thing here. No question about it. Yes, he could have easily overpowered her physically, but I don't believe tackling a little old lady would have been any better than using a taser. Here's what went down in the video:
-She was speeding.
-She was being uncooperative and using abusive verbal language.
-She refused to sign the ticket which here in the US is NOT an admission of guilt but simply an acknowledgment of having been notified of and receiving a ticket. She could've easily contested it later in court.
-She kept pulling away from the deputy which is a major no-no.
-She approached the deputy in a threatening stance. Of course she wouldn't really be able to hurt him, but the threat is just the same.
-She actually took a swing at the deputy. Again another major no-no.
-She threatened to flee the scene.
-She was resisting arrest.
-She was warned at least 5 times that she was going to be tased if she didn't cooperate.
The deputy did the right thing here. Gender and age are no excuse to behave this way.

Edited by: northwesten on 13/06/2009 06:26:46 you know! all these comments! Tazer is a wrong choice of force! most of all on this dumb arse! In honesty this guy how he shouted at her! and then they say his saftey? If his saftey was at risk he should of called back up then
With this problem not coming over a arse hole shouting in her face and pushing her all around all the time. Then Tazering her was over board. In UK police officer don't seem to have a problem in getting the job done with out tazering. Yet 72 year old needs to be tazered? if saftey at risk at risk he could of pepper spray her! or just quickly get her cuffed.
All I seen is a 300ib man with a 5ib woman been over powered then Tarazed by a short tempered officer. I finding some video that officer act unprofessional compared to UK police officer and have a short temper!
Cuffing her or pepper spray no more! I for one agree she was a arse but too much force was given!
Most Professional officer to date!

She was old. She coulda died. I guess. Still, she was being difficult. I suppose the PC thing to do woulda been to wait for a second officer to show up and then cuff her. But she may have fled. She may have been a crazy ***** who would have gotten into her car and backed over the officer. She might have summoned a zombie.
Lotsa maybe's. Clearly it doesn't look good. Or too respectful towards your elders. But this is a cop in Texas. Texas cops are seriouz biznezz about this stuff. So...what did she think would happen I wonder.
Something like this?:
Officer: "Ticket for you. lulz." Old Lady: "I'm Old." Officer: "Oh sorry, my bad. No ticket." |

Short tempered? Like speaking into his mic to confirm course of action and then giving 5 times a warning kind of short tempered? -- If there is anything in your life you fear of losing, then keep your mouth shut once in a while. |

Kinda also suggests that Texan police seem to be afraid of people and seem to have to resort to firearms and tasers to deal with the slightest rowdy makers. |

More likely police are afraid, and tired, of law suit happy people who think they can sue the pants off the government when they get caught breaking the law. Have you been hit by a taser? Its the easiest way of making someone compliant. My roomie's a cop, he's been tased, we've both been pepper sprayed. He says tasing is the best method for unruly people, I have no reason not to believe him.
A person broke the law. A person was caught and ticketed. A person refused the ticket. A person was resisting arrest. A person was warned that they would be tazed. A person continued resisting, assaulted the officer, and placed both their lives in jeopardy.
That person was then tased.
Age and gender do not come into it.
It is FAR safer than physically restraining someone, that can cause serious damage to themselves when they resist. |

Easy way to solve this problem, revoke all driver licences for those over 70. We get rid of the mean old grandmas that frighten the cops off the road (and as a side benefit reduce green hosue gases from cars going barely over 30 in a 60) and the old grandmas dont have to worry about beign tazzed anymore for not being treated as they think they should be. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

I'm not talking about old people, I'm talking about anyone taking injuries to muscle/bone due to resisting cops who have the authority to use necessary force to affect an arrest.
If someone resists, and a couple of cops have to take them down, kneel on their neck/back to get the cuffs on, they're not exactly liable for any damage.
In the instance of an old person, who's bones are probably extremely brittle.. just twisting her arms behind her against her will could've caused strains, sprains, fractures or even breaks.
If the emotional shock of being tased or even arrested sends her into cardiac arrest, its her own damn fault. Old people have to follow the law, too. Kudos to the cop.
