AMD Phenom 9550 2.20GHz Quad Core Processor Asus M2N-SLI Motherboard 2048 MB (2GB) DDR2 800MHz PC6400 Memory 500GB 7,200 RPM SATA2 Hard Drive Dual nVidia GeForce 9600GT Video Graphics Cards (SLI)
At the moment I'm on a laptop (booo) and am switching over to a desktop in the next month or so and was wondering if this setup is good enough to run EVE at max with a decent FPS rate. Note that I consider "decent" at 30-40ish. I know to get more memory, but that's what I'm starting with. Budget isn't too tight so if you have any suggestions, please let me know. |

First thing that strikes me is the SLI of 9600's.
I would ditch these and go with a single card that costs around the same. You say the budget isn't too tight so i would probably look at the GTX 275, although this is slightly more than 2x the cost of a 9600 it will give you better performance and give you a longer time before having to upgrade your GFX again. Depending on your gaming resolution a 260 may be more than enough for your needs.
As you have said you need more RAM, the difference in cost is minimal so i would recommend going for 2x2GB sticks from the offset. =============================================

I'm currently using the following:
3.0ghz Intel dual core 2 GB DDR2 800mhz ram 300 GB HDD Geforce 9800 GTX+OC
It runs eve in max detail easily and my video card is the fastest non-GTX 200 series card on the market. Also one of the beefiest single core cards on the market. Should be around 100 bucks right now.
I am however waiting for the Geforce GTX 350 to come out. its DX 11 compliant. Around this time I will also most likely upgrade to the Core I7 and DDR 3 memory.
If you can somehow stomach a wait of about 6 more months before upgrading I would advise that just to maximize your benefits. Then again prices on lesser hardware (which is more then enough to run eve in max) will be falling so you could always just buy cheap.
Moral of the story: Cutting edge stuff coming, markdowns coming, might be better to save some money by waiting a while longer to upgrade. |

Thank you both. I figured the dual cards would be useless, so I'll look into others. 275 GTX may be a bit pricey, though. As for waiting, that really isn't an option for me. This laptop is so old it can barely even run Half-Life without a problem. Again, thank you both.

Edited by: Leviathan9 on 13/06/2009 17:27:28 Currently i am using this.
P4 3ghz 1.5gb RAM PNY Geforce 7300GT 512mb..
But i just ordered this beast last tuesday.
AMD Phenom II X4 940 (4 x 3.0 GHz) 6MB - Black Edition Corsair XMS2 8GB PC2-6400 800 MHZ (4 x 2 GB) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 OC2 - 1 GB - 2xDVI/VGA (BFG) OCZ 700W Game XStream - Low Noise Asus M3N72-D 5200MT/s (NVIDIA 750a) Thermalright Ultima-90i - Silent
But my old p4 still runs eve at 1440x900 with 30-50 FPS with the graphics set to high, no bloom or HDR though. But yeah SLI seems a bit overated to me. You can get single GPUs that run things just as well and with less heat and power consumption... and noise. You'd be better off buying a single card, it'll save you cash which you could spend on something else, like maybe getting 4gb ram instead of 2, you'll need to get a 64bit OS though if you do that, you could just use W7 RC.

Get a single 4870/4890. Not only will it save you cash but will also perform better than two 9600Gt's.

Phenom II X3 720 or Phenom II X4 940. Beautiful chips, they are. 4870/4890 instead of the 9800s. You could buy a DDR3 Mobo but it isn't necessary, just more expensive. The Phenom II AM3's will run in AM2/AM2+ boards. |

That spec is more than enough to run Eve well, with plenty of eye candy to boot. |
