o/ Gang,
So I was watching some of the tuts put up, and after getting the full version of fraps and playing around with it etc, I noticed that when i record fraps at full scale, 30fps, the quality is fine but sometimes the playback would freeze. Now i'm assuming its where my ati x1600 fails.. never the less i'm still hoping to fraps some of my fights and at 30fps at half scale it works just fine.
the question i have to ask you today my eve is whether half scale is good enough quality to work with? I plan to edit using final cut pro/ after effects. Would the half scale recording in fraps be good enough to see the names of modules im hitting etc and also things in local [not that it matters, just so I can get an idea of quality].
Also, what settings would you/do you use to fraps stuff in?
For you info i'm using an intel mac with xp installed. x1600 2gig mem, 10gig on HD and then a portable one which i'll use to transfer/edit in osx. |

Not really, all text will be hard to make out.
Playback freezing? you mean watching raw fraps files? That will stutter on some machines regardless, which doesn't mean the edit will appear the same way once it's compressed down into something more digestible. Give it a go, and see if the final edit is workable.

yeah the stutter is just during playback When im recording its fine. [and yeah I was just viewing from the intial files in the fraps folder].
Cheers for the tip, I'll give it a go and let you know. Any more pro tips are welcome.

The higher quality source you can get, the easier it s for you to make something enjoyable to watch. Just talking pure technical here, you can always downsize and downgrade, you can not however draw pixels out of thin air and make things better. Even tho you're gonna end up with about 0.5-1gb/min with the best raw source (what I get anyway) it's worth the HDD space.
I'd say NEVER use half-size. Never, ever, ever! Use the right compression methods, and you can get 1GB down to 50-100MB when fully coded etc. |

Ok cool thanks.
I havent got onto the editing stage yet, but i'm assuming i'll be able to edit with the raw fraps footage? or do i have to compress it before editing?
[I havent read up as far as that yet so apologies if its already covered in the tuts posted]. |

edit with the raw; you can compress it if you run out of HDD space though, to make room for more fraps. I have been guilty of making a video just because "my HDD was full" but lately I've been compressing them and storing them for later use so I can get moar good fraps. |
