I found out last night that my old laptop is still capable of decent framerates - 60fps when looking back at a station as I undock. Unfortunately over the course of fifteen minutes it drops to 24fps.
I'm guessing this is the infamous resource mismanagement issue at work. Perhaps my gfx card is getting clogged up with textures and the machine is having to transfer stuff across the AGP bus more than it used to. My new machine has 256MB of RAM on its card so perhaps that's enough to hide the problem. -- (Battle hardened miner)

Edited by: Andrue on 13/03/2007 08:32:10 Having spent money on an upgrade recently and with the bits arriving over a few days I can give further insight into what helps FPS with Eve.
Starting system: AMD64 3500+ NVidia 6800LE 512MB RAM (one module had just failed) Realtec onboard sound (client runs with sound enabled)
Worst case FPS (Pirate Invasion in heat of battle):7 Outside a quiet station:45 Outside a gate with concord and a couple of player ships:60
Added RAM, fps became:15/45/60 (no change on last two) client returned to being smooth as it was before I lost one of my 512MB modules.
Graphics card updated to 7900GS:16/65/80 (minor change to worst case, big change to others)
CPU upgraded to AMD64 4000+ (single core):19/70/85
Sound card upgraded to Creative Xi-fi:25/70/85 (big change in Pirate Invasion).
My conclusions:Graphics-wise the NVidia 6800LE is more than capable of playing Eve. Sound is a serious CPU hog unless you have a decent card that can take the load away. You need at least 1GB of RAM. CPU is important.
IMO when upgrading the order of importance is: Soundcard (if you play with sound) CPU RAM (get the fastest your motherboard supports) Graphics card but really only if you have something truly dire or money to burn.
Edit:When buying a soundcard do check what reviewers say about mainboard CPU usage. I chose the Xi-fi because several reviewers specifically mentioned that it reduced CPU usage. It's possible that this is a unique feature of this card so be careful :) -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

FYI:I just installed an 8800GT and one area where it makes a huge difference is in the rendering of clouds. These no longer have any significant impact on framerate. I don't know what the peak FPS is because I have interval=1 to limit it to 60fps but after several hours running missions the lowest I ever saw it go (during the height of L4 Recon 1/3) was 52fps.
That compares with the low 20s for my 7900GS. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)
