Anyone got the new 13"/15"/17" Macbook Pro's (After June 8th 2009)
The new battery obviously changed the chaises layout... hows heat? Performance changes at all? |

I should be able to answer for the top-end 15" by the end of next week.

You lucky SOB (with respects) :)
Honestly I'm happy with mine... they took away the PCI Express Card slot... oh well. You do get the new batt... I've seen them at 9 hours... idle of course but damn....
Let me know how it works out for yah! |

My company offers 2-year, interest-free loans for employees to purchase personal computers. It works out awfully nice if you can deal with a 2-year upgrade cycle. :) |

I'm wondering about this too. Previous advice here suggested getting two batteries, one for gaming and one for regular computing. Since that's not an option now, I'm wondering how gaming on the new MBPs will effect the battery life?
I can't make up my mind yet between the 17" MBP (just have to have it instead of the 15" lol) or a Falcon Northwest TLX2. |

It turns out my loan request was approved. Just got back from the Apple store with a new 15" 2.8 GHz MBP. Woo-hoo! I'm just starting to transfer everything over to the new machine. I should be able to get some EVE time in later tonight.

In terms of heat affecting long term battery life?

Edited by: Drake Draconis on 21/06/2009 02:31:06 Apples removed the ability to change the batteries... no more hatch...at least not user serviceable. (13" That is... not sure about larger ones but I suspect its the same)
According to my sources... handling the new lithium polymer batteries is dangerous to the battery... they don't like being gripped/compressed...
New tech.. with new... uh sensitivity?
As for heat... not an issue.. the heat sources are towards the back... batt's are in the front.
Battery life should be as expected... but I'd expect youd be plugged in and not on battery power while playing. ========================= CEO of Shadow Cadre http://www.shadowcadre.com ========================= Dependable, Honorable, Intelligent, No-nonsense Vote Herschel Yamamoto for CSM! |

I finally had a chance to get some playtime in. There's not a lot of hard numbers in this post, but the performance of EVE on the recently released MacBook Pros is simply stellar.
For reference, I'm upgrading from a June 2008 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM and an Nvidia 8600M GT with 256MB of VRAM. The new system is the current top-end standard configuration 15" MacBook Pro. I usually run EVE fullscreen with bloom off; all other graphics settings at their highest quality; and interval set to 1.
The integrated 9400M chip performs exceptionally, arguably better than the discrete graphics on my previous machine. There is a slight degradation in quality (textures lose their specular), but I'm willing to let that go seeing as the chip could pump out 30 fps in stations; 60 fps spinning my ship in space; and 30 fps in warp. The performance is so good on the 9400M that, at first, I forgot that this beasty wasn't even using it's real graphics card.
Switching over to the 9600M GT requires a logout to take effect. Again, performance is impressive. 30-35 fps in station; 60 fps in space; and 60 fps in warp. For giggles I warped to the nearest sun. The effects on the star used to drop my framerate down into the 10-15 fps range. No more. 60 fps. I'm sure that if I reset the interval to immediate, I could push far more out of the chip. I'm already quite pleased with the performance and don't see any reason to push the chip a bit harder in exchange for more heat.
Heat you say? Yes heat: 9400M: 70C CPU, 60C GPU 9600m GT: 75C CPU, 78 GPU
If anyone was considering the new hardware, just go buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Are you running the Mac client or using bootcamp/windows?
Good god my descision just got harder! Lol. I could get the 17" MBP and the external display for what I would pay for the Falcon NW fragbook. Argh! :) |

Mac native client. Performance on Windows would probably be even better, but there may still be some problems with drivers and the fans.
EDIT: Stupid forum

Thanks so much Tiska!
So you have experience with both the Eve Mac Client on a Mac, and the Eve PC client on a PC? Is there a "difference"? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm just angsty about spending the money LOL.
Someone told me that the Eve Mac Client isn't as "nice" as the PC one - I'm sure that info is here somewhere, but well - when my head is swimming with $$$ it's hard to concentrate... That and I have ADD something terrible. |

i think that might have been from before the Apocrypha release. prior to that, the Mac client didn't have the premium graphics, so it was all low-res textures and so on. but now, they should be quite similar (although, admittedly, i haven't tried to run it on a pc)
thanks for the info Tiska.... although, i say thanks, in fact you've now just made me want a new 15" MBP even more than i did before, but i just can't afford it until the end of the year.... :( |

How did you manage to switch over to 9600M GT?
