So, I've come to that age where I can now ride a 50cc legally, huzzah .
And I've got my eyes on a nice little Suzuki TX , and its going for about ś100, which is quite a nice deal, but the reason for the low price is its not got an MOT, V5 document fluff, road tax, or even a speedo, So therefore illegal for road use .
But however, would it be possible to make it road legal again? I've been told that fitting a speedo/ fuel gauge is relativly easy and all the work that it needs can be done if you have the parts.
But would it pass an MOT if I took it to a garage with all the shiny parts on it? Does it need to be manufactured for road use in the first place?
Thanks for your time

First, get the V5 registration document, this means sending off to Swansea including the number plate reg. and the chasis and engine numbers. Provided it's not stolen or written off, you will get a V5 in your name.
Next make the bike road legal, find a local bike breaker and tell them what you need, most speedo's from small suzukis would fit. Other things to check are brakes, lights, tyres, horn and a legal exhaust.
Once you get it MoT ready, insure the thing first, then get an MoT, then you can get tax disc.
It can be a pain to get a bike road legal, but usually worth the effort.

Alternatively, buy something that's road legal to start with. Sounds a bit dodgy that it's missing a V5 and guages, I wouldn't want to trust it. Even if it's origin wasn't in question, from the sounds of it it's probably not in particularly great shape, you'll be riding an accident-waiting-to-happen. Still, it might be fun to have something that will require lots of tinkering.
I miss my 50cc bike. Was stolen from outside our house at the time Was a trail bike, Honda CRX or something like that, bright orange and sounded like a hairdryer on steroids. I still love the smell of two-strokes. Sold my 600cc Yamaha Diversion a few years back, would love a japanese sports bike, but not unless I move to a place with a garage. The elements aren't very kind to bikes left out for so long |

Edited by: Gone''Postal on 22/06/2009 06:02:22 Items a bike does not need to pass an mot are
Turn signals Speedo Rev counter Wing Mirrors Lights (restricted to a daytime MOT) V5 (you can't tax a bike without it)
I have a Aprilia RX125 (converted motorcross 92 bike)
It has a head and tail light and thats it and it sales through MOT's
For your age, i'd get a bike that don't need work on tho tbh, and if you are that young, I'd get one with the fluff such as Speedo, Turn signals and Wing mirrors or just going to become a stain on the road very fast.

Sort of.
The speedo isn't tested as part of an MOT, but you cannot legally ride the bike on the road without one.
So, fair enough you could use a trailer to take the bike to and from the test centre, but since the whole point of getting an MOT done is to ride the bike on the road, what's the point if it still lacks the minimum requirements - i.e. a speedo? |

You obviously don't ride bikes.
I do look where I am going and I don't speed. However, that doesn't save me from cars and vans that pull out of junctions without looking, causing me to slam on the breaks at 50 mph on a wet road.
I try to anticipate what is happening ahead, but that still won't save me from people that don't look before turning onto a 50mph road. |

Yeah after looking at the bike again, then getting some feedback off others, I decided not to go for the one I found in the OP.
Instead I went into town yesterday, bought a bike trader mag, checked ebay and stuff, gonna go for a Honda instead, just needs taxing then should be good to go.
Oh.. and I live in a village on the very outskirts. I dont intend to use it anywhere near the cluster**** of a road system that is Derby city . So no crashing into trucks for me, just country roads and rolling hills . |

What model are you going for?

With the utmost of respect mate, don't be so ****y.
As someone older than you with a full bike license, more road experience and a bigger bike (I have a Bandit 650 atm) I can tell you from past experience that it's those very country roads where I have had most of my close shaves with cars and vans.
That 50mph emergency stop I mentioned earlier?
It was a country road - the A71 as it happens.
I don't mean to insult you, but I remember well getting my first bike and having that feeling of invincibility :)
Getting a bike is one of the best things you can do, but please please spend as much as you can afford on protective gear and always do your checks and observations - your CBT is just the start of your learning :) |

Going for a Honda MTX, probably get some better more road like tires for it I think.
Getting the motocross style bike 1) because it has gears , unlike some of the stupid twist n go scooters. 2) because getting anything that looks like a normal road bike is hard for a smaller engine, a friend has one, but he paid through the nose for it.
And I do respect what you're saying , I do know that you have to really take on board your surroundings, whats ahead of you and your own capability when you're riding, know the blind spots etc.
But y'know, I've still got to learn and it scares the crap outta me if im honest, although I've been looking forward too it ever since I turned 15
Thanks for the advice

You do need a speedo, and also a mileometer I beleive. If the bike is later than early 90's, you also need indicators if the bike was originally sold with them. Some bike MOT places are more a stickler for the rules than others though, especially if you know them and are a good customer. As to no lights, you can get a daytime only mot, but unless you live in the middle of nowhere (and the only local copper is your uncle), it's really not worth the extra hassle of getting stopped by every single copper who sees you. You are going to get more than enough of that kind of hassle anyway as a youngster on a bike if you live anywhere remotely urban.
To the OP, the only really useful advice (if this post is going to be shorter than a book) is get someone who knows a lot about bikes to check it over. If you want it to be legal, the cost can start to grow out of hand very quickly if your not careful, and start bracing yourself now for the price of spares, which are often ridiculous. Also if the bike has no log book, you should be spending as much time 'checking out' the seller of the bike as the bike itself.

you can when you're 17 I think. I did my CBT on a 125, but for people really eager to get on the road when they're 16 they're stuck with 50cc |

One thing to remember.
Despite all the talk of riding carefully, you ARE going to hit the road at some point. We all do.
Buy a jacket(with at least elbow and shoulder armor), gloves, and wear some sturdy footwear. There's an idiot I see near work sometimes that rides a Harley in shorts and flip flops, tarmac is very effective at removing skin and grinding bone down.

As others have stated; the second you think everything's fine and dandy is the second some middle aged woman in a red Peugeot 205 comes rushing up the road from behind trees/some hidden other crap while trying to put on lipstick. People are idiots and they don't pay attention, don't EVER think it's safe.
And yes, invest in a proper crash helmet and gear. Looking cool on a bike in your summer wear isn't cool, it's just stupid.

QFT.
Also, and i cant stress this enough, no matter what else you do NEVER ride without gloves on. ever.
get the best pair of gloves you can afford, (if you can stretch to ones with kangaroo skin palms id suggest doing so, theyre well worth it.)
i see so many little scrotes ragging about here on thier 125s with all the gear on except gloves and it makes me cringe!
sliding along tarmac, with no protection, youll rub through an insane amount of flesh, something like an inch every few seconds. (cant remember the exact figures but its frightening) now compare that to your hands, theres not a lot of margin for error before you run out of flesh and hit bone and tendons.
other than that, have fun!
