So I'm redownloading the trial, by redownloading I meant I've done it before but I completely forgot what it was like, I remember playing a Hammerer and it being meh, but other than that no.
What should I expect and what should I try out first, I plan to try out all the classes. I've been having this damned itch for fantasy and orks or spellcasting or whatever, and I can't find my Guild WArs case. ---- My Music |

Dpends, I found the game still lackluster, it somehow feels detached. It also doesn't really feel as an MMORPG but more an MMOFPS. Of all the classes I tried I found the witchhunter the most fun, they do good damage and they playstyle is 'different'.

Edited by: Luna Sistere on 21/06/2009 18:46:58 Well lets see. When I quit they nerfed the tanks into oblivion, made mages gods, the main healers were a joke, the hybrids could keep an entire group going indefinitely, and the Orc choppa AOE move was broken making them the spam king of the game.
With each patch you received more lag as a feature, becoming unbearable in certain area's. And they condensed the servers which are now lopsided. I believe Monolith was Destruction heavy and Phoenix Throne was Oder heavy. The downside of 2 sided games, eventually somebody is going to win.

I did the 30 day trial some time back and, while I did enjoy the game for the most part it just seems a little incomplete, lacks a final coat of polish and simply doesn't have enough players on any given server (making world PvP missions redundant). I tried dark elf healer, elf lion guy (diff server) and greenskin squig herder. I thoroughly enjoyed the greenskin perhaps more than the others. The NPCs, the voices, the way they look, the quest chains were all brilliant, much more so than the other races. There's one in particular I thought was absolute class...I shan't spoil it for you, but soon after entering the world you are asked to investigate some barrels, you'll eventually see what I mean. Let us know how you get on. |

For Order I generally played the Knight of the Sun or the Warriorpriest. The knight was simply awesome on the spec line that gave bonuses to his DOT's and resistances. Nothing like wading through the enemies forces soaking up damage and slowly killing a mage desperately trying to flee.
And the warriorpriest made a great solo class and support character. Very versatile in being on the front line or in the back and made mad ORVR point healings randoms during standoffs.
On Destruction I stuck to the disciple and zealot. Disciples were just sick in combat. I remember once in Khaines Embrace my friend on his witch elf and myself off the entire Order side at their drop down point. Now if they had come at us all at once that would have been a different story but the order on that server weren't known to be smart.

Please, dont .
No seriously, save yourself the hassle of having lost even a single minute into playing the utter piece of crap that WAR is.
As someone mentioned earlier, this is not an MMO, there are true MMO's out there, with their cons and pros, but WAR is the most utter piece of rubbish ever to have been vomited out into the pestilent sea of pus that is the MMO genre.
It's a mix of a half baked, poorly done MMO (with hideous PVE) and a Shoot Em' Up FPS fantasy style 1988 Arcade game whose company went into bankruptcy.
It's not an MMO, nor an FPS, yet it somehow tries to make us believe that Capture the Flag, King of the Hill and Bunker Defense can be played better with Elven, Ork and Goblin skins in a lagged out server that boots you to char select sometimes, and eventually rewards you for playing the same 3 old maps over and over and over again with the knowledge that fragging err killing the other side is good for the sake of just killing it without any real meaning... I mean even Enemy Territory had better rewards when you played a Campaign, and that was way back.
I just realized, if WAR had a polished environment, where you could FPS your way into someones head and BOOM HEADSHOT him with your uber Dark Bolt of Nerdiness Magicks and had an official server wide Ladder system and Kill to Hit/ratio , insta frag leaderboard and kewl new skins for the elite top 10 gibbers of the day, WOA< that game would rock!!! but I would never pay 15$ a month for access to their server anyway.
Sadly it is what it is, and is a piece of leftover atole puked over by the parasitic street dogs that couldnt stand it and some weird shady cook refried over some rotten egs , packed it into an stale piece of bread and is selling it to you as the new european baggete deluxe of infinite tastyness ... and if you don't like it you are an ape and uncouth lout without real knowledge of high cuisine.
The devs are a piece of UBER STEAMING CRAP , considering some of them have even declared people don't get their game cuz they don't know how to play it as they laugh away (laugh away at your dropping subs fools), if CCP devs said that I would honestly believe them, EVE is a complex game and not everyone gets it, to get WAR you just need to know how to shoot, WASD around and LOL. And Honestly, WOW is better at that and their devs honestly look cleaner and better fed.
Bitter much? yes. I wasted several of my hard earned $$$ in that horrendous game and even leveled several toons on destro side, once I managed to hit Tier 4 and see the endgame for what it was, I knew I was better playing Call of Duty if I wanted to "PVP".
Utter fail at whatever it tries to do, the only good thing is the background lore and honestly it was done before the game even existed anyway.
I honestly will enjoy the day the game gets plugged out, their servers down and the devs fired or relocated to doing hello kitty online.
If you want a fantasy fix, try the true and tried WOW crap or beta your way in into the new games out there.

Vanguard, seriously. These days it's cool, nice amounts of polish, fun classes and great looks. It has NO pvp at all, but the ambiance, gameplay and pve is just fun. It really feels like an 'old school MMO', but with fantastic graphics.

For the long post above the one I quoted, thank you, I wasted my morning waiting for the downloader to finish and I'm not even gonna bother anymore. But vanguard, is there a free trial? Honestly it's just what I need, a polished fantasy game. I've always hated the gritty graphics and always like the polished effects or maybe cartoon style (One of the main reasons I love swtor). |

Well, I can reccomend Vanguard with a grain of salt.
Yes, there's a free trial (download is huge, but most games these days peak 2 gigs in their downloads anyway) and it's called Isle of Dawn .
It IS an old school MMO, and is somehow what the true EQ2 should have been. It has that certain taste of the old, and I must admit, the world IS HUGE to explore and the background lore good, the ideas on the diplomacy system are nice. I enjoyed it tremendously but was dragged down by the utter failure of the devs in polishing it back when it came out (was buggy as hell). I have heard good things about it lately tho, but I'm just stuck with LOTRO atm.
If you want your fantasy fix Vanguard/LOTRO/EQ2 are solid choices if we want to skip WoW.
Vanguard is an obscure game with very little dev power but seems they have managed to polish most of it. I have good fond memories of it. Try the necro's if you into it, I loved the way they made necros in the game with their pets and the ability to customize their mechanics with grafts.
I'm playing LOTRO atm , you can try the trial here. wich is another light headed fantasy mmo. Very casual and solo friendly. And I love the way it looks too, so there you have it, two nice choices

I really tried to like WAR, because I like the Warhammer universe, but after playing for a month I had to admit defeat and uninstall. all the issues are covered by previous posters already, so I don't go there. it wasn't definitely a bad game, seen much worse (those that koreans are pooping out every month) and they had nice ideas and improvements, but they just couldn't keep it up.
picked up Age of Conan for fantasy "fix" and was pleasantly surprised how the game had improved from horrible launch. even played it for 2 months, witch is a big achievement for me

Edited by: Kayosoni on 22/06/2009 19:32:47 **** sux. Anything with RvR sucks. 6 months ago when I was playing l2 we were the top clan in L2 across any server... and bored. Everyone quit for War. Well turns out they became the top clan in War on their server, except IT SUCKS CAUSE IT'S RVR and there is no end game content. So everyone quit war after 2 months and is now back to l2.
Sorry but not being about to pick your enemies = fail. Having to deal with ******s on your faction and not being able to kill them = fail.
I still think that L2 is the only fantasy MMO worth playing at all (and I am playing it currently.) |

I don't play with HDR on cause it looks ridiculous in L2. and the game uses the unreal 2 engine from like what... 2002? It's pretty aged and I still think the game looks decent (at least when not on toi13 or in a catacomb.)
HDR makes it looks like this:

By L2 do you mean Lineage 2? I'm tempted to give it a try as nothing else seems particularly interesting right now. What are your thoughts on the gameplay, classes, char customisation/development, etc? What about PvE and PvP content? Populated servers? |

Edited by: Tzar''rim on 23/06/2009 09:01:12 If you're not looking for PVP or a leveling race and want to to play a 'true' MMORPG with HUGE maps, choices of where and how to level, good crafting etc then Vanguard is very good. When I started (at release) it was utter crap, I reopened my account about 2 months ago to have 'something on the side' to get my fantasy mmo fix.
The game plays well, there's different ways of leveling and it somehow doesn't urge you to level like an idiot. You can just enjoy where you are and have the freedom to do whatever you want. Sure it has max level and raiding but it's not like you HAVE to be max level is fantastic gear to have fun.
It has 15 classes so it's great for the altoholics under us. Ofcourse it has it's issues and there isn't much in the way of development (it only has like 4 devs) but it works. It's VERY solo friendly and the game is just made to embrace the ambiance and have fun rather than rushing to max level.
Also, the music is fantastic. |

Edited by: Munchees on 23/06/2009 12:57:00 Don't listen to the guy who said Lineage 2. It's a boring grind.
The problems are: Half the population are gold sellers The other half of the population will make you lose faith in humanity As I said, the game is a boring grind for l337 gear
Anyway, RVR worked great with Dark Age of Camelot. The reason WAR fails is because they are trying to appeal to WoW players, which is no surprise since Mythic is owned by EA these days.
Just stick with EVE. |

I played WAR from Beta until about Patch 1.1 as a Magus and my experience of WAR was one with some good ideas, like group questing, interesting PVP arrangements but spoiled by truly horrific balancing issues and a slow ass patching process.
The PvE side of WAR was almost literally a WoW clone and it was long after level 28 that I lost interest. WoW itself is being uninstalled in the very near future and unless something colossal changes I wont be going back to that either.
However, like many posters here, I also have the fantasy itch and am hoping for a decent PVP fantasy MMO. I've heard good things about Guild Wars - is it still actibely played? |

Not too sure, I can't find my Guild Wars: Factions case (I think I gave it to my friend who has christian parents that are strict as hell and never got to play it). I liked WoW until we were sleeping through 10-man Naxx and I still had to deal with idiots hating on my Ret Pally. Other than that balancing issues INCLUDING ret paladins (I felt too powerful at times). A friend's friend of mine still pays and plays my own account. http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Uldum&n=Bestofworst. Whenever we get around to it me and my friend are gonna sell the account for massive $$ and split the money. Blizzard had such a great game until WOTLK. And the community isn't great either, even if this forum doesn't have a new post every 10 seconds, I like it a lot better than the flame fest of the WoW OT Forums. |

Edited by: Luna Sistere on 23/06/2009 15:38:36 So out of curiosity, what killed AOC for you?
When I was playing WAR my friends were whining about many aspects of WAR and then the idea of AOC was brought up and next thing I know I am being hounded to join them in D/L the game. 30 hours later (Mother of god that is a big game) we get to trying it. Except that 3 of the 4 of us had a issue with the autopatcher relooping. Bout gave it up then and there but I solved the issue myself (because aoc related forums blow donkey balls) and we started playing.
Personally once you get past the Tortage gank squads its not so bad, you just have to deal with *******s in the underhalls and White Sands for a bit. Usually what I do now is level on nighttime as far as I can then take care of little around the town things.
Anyways I've got a ranger to 44 or 46 right now and a necro to 32 and I love both of them to death. Biggest issue that I have is that everyone tends to level faster than I do which means I end up solo'n a lot.
Edit: I should add that I specifically topped out my pc after giving this game a test run and I now run with full graphics on which to me are just incredible. i find it amusing to watch my little ladies get lost in high grass. |

That is usually how I feel about casters in general but I can't get enough of the necro now. She is the AOE Queen once you get a few levels. Right now I brand a 10 second pbaoe, 10 second gtaoe, an instant pbaoe, a cone aoe, a snare, a single target cc, and 3 dd attacks. And I'm up to 4 different types of pets, my latest being casters. I can only have half as many but they do a ton of damage.
I may suggest a barbarian to start. They're like a tank that can get rogue abilities which means fast as hell stealth speed and great damage and crowd control.

pbaoe - Point blank area of effect. Means you are ground zero and anyone not part of your group standing around you is going to have a real bad day.
gtaoe - Ground target aoe. Think of it as calling in an air strike. In fact the spell is called ice storm or something like that and it actually reminds me of the orbital bombardment your space marine general gets in 40k DoW. Anyways its the aoe with a ground target that you can place to nuke groups from a distance. Keep in mind they may leave the area.
Instant pbaoe - like the above with you being ground zero except there is no build up and the damage is a one shot deal. Great for handling the stragglers that didn't die the first time.
Cone aoe - Usually covers an area in front of you generally in a 45 degree arc or a 90 and goes farther than the standard aoe.
DD - Direct damage. Single target rather than entire groups. Great for when you want to pull one and not the entire army.
DoT - Forgot to add this one but you get these too. Damage over Time. Hits the target for a base damage and then continues to tick for x amount of time, usually getting weaker per tick. Can come in single target or aoe form. On the Necro its single target but you get 2 of them.
Snare - Big bad tank coming at you? Use Snare. Slow his speed by x% and run like hell.
CC - Crowd control. Snare didn't work and he still wants ya? Hit your CC and stop him from doing anything at all for the next 10 seconds. For the necro the spell is fear. By sacrificing one of your pets (you carry a squad) you cause fear in your opponent. HE puts his hands to his head and runs around in circles not being able to use any abilities or attacks.
