Okay, so a select few of you may remember a post I made a while back concerning PvP and my ultimate failure in it.
SO, Heeding your advice - I grab the Orca and ship off to Jita and buy 10x Rifters with PvP fitting. Sorta average 200mm plate, Autocannons deal.
Anyway, each one of these ships is designated the title "Icarus". I thought it fitting.
Last night, Icarus I finally met its doom - but lemme tell you how far I actually got.
From Sarekuwa in the Lonetrek Region, I achieved 43 jumps into low, and eventually Null Sec. Hitting the very edge of Outer Ring. I finally saw some Magma Mercoxit in the flesh! PRAISE THE LAWD.
Jumping out there was pretty routine - I hit a couple of little camps, they tried to lock - but the advice of a quick warping frigate held true, and I was not caught. (Even after warping into an interdiction sphere by accident, well done whoever that was - you failed badly.)
I saw one of the biggest gatecamps in my EVE history, but thankfully they were ganking something else.
Now, as soon as I hit 0.0 - I looked for rare ores. None, a bit of Jaspet here and there, but the last time I checked, veld was more valuable.
I had to get to the very edge of space to find anything but Jaspet. I find that disappointing and probably one of the reasons why Null sec is DEAD. DEAD AS HELL. IF IT COULDN'T BE ANY MORE DEAD.
I'm 43 jumps out now so I'm gonna cut my losses and get killed for an insta-port back to Empire.
I holler in local;
"Right then, any of you chaps want to kill me so I can get home?"
A Manticore pops out of no where, naturally stalking me for the past god knows how long. He heeds my wishes and begins to fire on me...
I think he forgot Torpedoes don't really do a lot to frigates, I'm in a Rifter - tanking his damage on my raw shield recharge. He shortly bugs out afterwards as it wasn't really working. Thanks for trying though!
Following this - I set a course back to Sarekuwa in hope of finding a camp, which I do.
Afforementioned giant-camp-of-hell had moved up closer to where I was. This was the end of Icarus I.
I get stuck in a bubble and ultimately locked down and popped. Before leaving Outer Ring that night, I briefly manage to yell in local;
"Don't forget the pod."
Back to Todaki in a blink of an eye - I didn't mind paying around 4m to skip 34 jumps. It was a fair trade.
Overall, theres a couple of things I can say about Low and Null sec;
- Low Sec just seems to have more of the ore Empire does. The roids are bigger, but if you think about it - no "carebear" is going to risk his Hulk for that.
- Null Sec has slightly better ore, but you really do have to get right out there to find anything but the average stuff. The risk starts 7 jumps in, the reward is 36 more jumps away!
- 90% of systems are completely empty, if they're not empty - they just have people AFK in safespots. Even smacktalk in local can't bring them out from hiding.
- Null Sec gatecamps are vicious, but still relatively rare. The old adage of "every gate is camped" is incredibly untrue, only one gate had a "real" camp on it. Which ultimately killed me.
- Low/Null seems relatively SAFE providing you just use the damn map with statistics to spot potential camp points, and keep an eye on local/the overview.
- Low/Null is boring. I can tell you that theres a good reason its empty, and thats because all the content is in Empire. Low/Null needs something out there - anything, to make it worth while for Empire-bound players to move on.
I know its the desert of EVE but in all honesty - it just makes EVE look too big for its player base. Hundreds of completely unpopulated systems seems like a waste of time.
In summation - Icarus II is fit and loaded, ready for another expedition. What it will find, no one knows. But I can probably be certain that it'll be a long time before any of the Icarus-designated Rifters find something valid to kill. |

you must of not gone far into 0.0 other wise you would of hit the a,b,c's
arknor , bistor and crokite roids.
also we dont want everyone comming into 0.0 other wise it would be harder to rat, if you get the system to your self you make make some isk pruning the belts of the smelly 1-2 BS spawns :)
you might say nullsec is boring to you but i am as sure as hell am enjoying it, we have op's and pvp everynight to secure space while dropping towers to grow the space we have secured already. and it even more fun because our blue list is very small so we have lots of neut and red to shoot :)
you can only really expereince nullsec when you will a alliance living in nullsec

I understand what the OP is saying, but you can't jump to those conclusions after one (albeit deep) trip into nullsec.
1) Alliances control most of nullsec and have intel channels. sometimes it's not worth their time to chase down a single frigate from a corp that they've never heard of. sure, a majority of systems aren't populated 100% of the time, but if you were in a 0.0 alliance and paid attention to the intel channels, you'd know that there's always something going on somewhere.
2) People in 0.0 tend to have better things to do than camp gates unless they know a largeish (i.e. more than one lone frigate) is incoming.
3) lowsec tends to be about small groups of gate campers, the mechanics are similar to highsec except without concord, you cannot claim sov and it's difficult to defend the space. 0.0 is all about alliance warfare, everyone is more organised and will defend their territory, calling on other neighbouring alliances to help when needed. in the scheme of things a single frigate is very small fry, and in general PvP is not directly profitable. (heck, if I send a few volleys of faction heavy missiles at your frigate I'll possibly expend half the cost of your frigate on ammo alone.)
4) 0.0 is not entirely about profit. alliances mine and build ships to sell at cost to alliance members.
5) all of what I wrote above is generalisations and there are exceptions.
notable exceptions are gate camps at high/low->nullsec boundaries which tend to be camped quite a bit by non 0.0 alliances.
still I like your stories :-)

Might want to consider High-end moons, Rats in the belts, Rats in anomalys, Exploration complexes, Radars, Magsites etc etc as other reasons to be in 0.0 [aside from PvP] ... Is not just the mining that draws peeps out to make isk :) |

Outer Ring is one of the poorest 0.0 regions - try looking at the belts in Branch or Deklein. |

I second that - crokite is certainly fairly common in the bottom left hand corner of deklein. |

He was at 30km! I couldn't close the gap with my Afterburner! I mean, I tried - and melted 70% of the module in the process. |

You had a afterburner fitted, on a rifter, in null sec, how absolutely fail. ;) (every ship in nullsec has a microwarpdrive fitted )

I just pulled a "Vanilla PVP Rifter" fit from BattleClinic - it incorporated an AB over an MWD for warp scram reasons.
Still - if I was flying my Claw around Null, then yes - definately an MWD on there.

Nullsec is only stays empty if you're on your own OP.
If you go there in a small gang all the ratters/miners/bears run and hide, start smacking in local from their cloaked safespots and start spreading the word to their intel channels, so before long after being deep in nullsec for 10-15 minutes you'll find yourself getting chased all the way back to lowsec by a bigger gang that formed up just for you, only to find camps are dropping bubbles further down the pipe on the way back to try and stop you anyway.

Aye, it is. There won't be any change to that soon either. The CCP thinks 0.0 is like a goal or something people would really want to work towards. Their miscalculation practically ruined low/null.
It's not the danger that is keeping people away. It's the sovereignity mechanism, and the related absolutely repulsive politics that it causes. Living down there is like living in a ghetto. High sec just simply offers more things to do, less restrictions, and less of the crap that is going on in low/null. Before sovereignity gets removed from the game entirely in all forms, there is nearly nothing that can make a great portion of player base actually want to go there. |

Sounds a bit like my story, a few days ago i got my first frigat, Punisher 1, and flew straight to amamake since I read there would be alot of action there, after a lot of jumping around i finally found a hauler being attack by 3 intercepters so i rush in to help and got the kill, but i dont think the 3 intercepters wanted my help so they quickly killed me.
13 punishers later i'am now in domain from where i flying out in to low and the providence region and havin quite a blast, well... being blasted mostly :)
p.s. send more isk, thanks.
p.p.s. will a fully insured t1 cruiser also be almost fully repayed when lost?

Yeah T1 fitted T1 craft tend to cost pittance, I think I lose 200K when a blackbird pops. If you fly mainly T1 its not hard at all to make money off PVP. |

Aye, it is.
lowsec is maybe boring, but 0.0 certainly not. Only jumping in 1 time in a frig in some random place in 0.0 and thinking that everyone is waiting for you, in the same frig as you are in, to fight you, 1vs1, thats just not going to work out.
You need to live for a longer time, next to a 0.0 chokepoint in lowsec or in 0.0 itself, to know were the places are were you can find fights, every day and every hour of the day.
