Because that is the ideal that a lot of Western societies are moving towards. The reason probably being that with more control the social aspects of living remain in an expected and steady state. Meaning lack of offense, or wrong doing and as a result an overall improvement in the quality of peoples lives. AT least that is what I belive the motivating actor to largely be. Part of the reason for this is an ever increasing concentration of population to cities.
Unfortunately coddling your population from birth to grave has proven disastrous for many of the countries involved in doing so. One only has to look at the disastrously skewed population figures of most if not all European countries, Canada and Japan. It is - I want to say great, but that isn't really the right word - comfortable while it lasts, but the window of this comfort only seems to be a generation or two wide.
Shunting off the debt resultant to younger generations may seem like a great idea at the time, but there is no guarantee that they will pay, can pay or even exist (ie the birthrate is way below replacement levels so there isn't actually going to be a younger generation to pay for it all).
Now that I've gotten way off topic, back to Austrailia; making laws that can't really be enforced, or/and are egregiously interfering with private life, is another mistake of big government. It fosters disregard and disrespect for laws and perhaps more importantly puts civil, law abiding, citizens over the line in to law breaking citizens regardless of their merit. Not a recipe for success. |

Edited by: Tara Moss on 25/06/2009 11:27:40 The independents & Family First are conservative (although I'm not sure where Nick Xenophon is on this), whose support the Labour governement needs to pass other critical legislation. So Labour is pandering to the conservatives.
That, combined with ill-conceived pre-election promises from Labour is the driving factor behind all of this.
To make matters worse, Turnbull has not taken a principled stand and is no-doubt checking which way the political winds are blowing so don't expect the Opposition to come out fighting on this.
The only people on the side of gamers are advocates on privacy, anti-censorship & The Australian Sex Party...none of whom have a foothold on middle Australia.
