I seem to get torn apart really fast in my Drake even though I have over 12k shield hit points and about 40-50 shield per second recharge.
I was training learning skills but now training engineering IV because lvl 3 missions are getting a bit too hairy. On multiple occassions I had to warp out |

If you fill your low slots with shield power relays you can fill your mid slots with shield rechargers and three large shield extenders. Also you will want to fit three core defense shield purger rigs on it. |

Depends on the mission but for a Drake, hardeners and/or resistance amps are preferred.
As Abr said, shield power relays and shield rechargers can get your recharge level way up. I reccomend fitting a mix of those, extenders, and a resistance amplifier or two. the Drake excells at passive tanking (i.e. not using any cap energy) so don't fit a booster. Increase your hitpoints through extenders and resistance amplifiers/hardeners, and use your lows to increase your passive recharge. You'll gain more HP than they'll be able to take away due to the high damage mitigation.
I'd check the Wiki article on the Drake here:
Also, if you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend the EVE fitting tool. It's good for experimenting with different fits and finding out what works for your skills.
Post your current setup if/when you get a chance and we'll see how it can be improved.
cheers! |

Edited by: Akuma Kenatsuki on 26/06/2009 17:16:59 Definately use hardeners for Level 3's. If the rats are using EM dmg, it doesn't matter how much shield HP you have, they will tear through it in seconds if you trigger incorrectly, due to the fact you are taking 100% of every hit. Use 2x LSE's in the mids and at least 2 hardeners (or even resistance amps), if not 3. This should drastically reduce the amount of damage you take from each shot fired at you (buffer tank), making the the shield last a lot longer and be able to keep up with DPS. Just make sure to check what faction is shooting at you and what types of damage they are doing, and match your hardeners to the damage types... |

My level 3 mission setup had 2 extenders and 4 hardeners in the mid slots, 1 shield power relay in the low slots with 3 ballistic control systems, and three purger rigs. That's plenty of tank. Some people recommend 3 extenders and 2-3 hardeners, see which you prefer. |

EFT is an essential part of eve unless you are a trader and never leave a station. Learn how to use it now. As soon as you get the hang of it you cant believe you ever flew without it.
Post your setup so people can comment specifically on it.
To get your tank to operate at its most efficient is a balance between all the modules that effect it. Hardeners are a very useful module and in most cases a shield tank uses them either passive or active. For example on a drake one EM T2 hardener ups the EM resistance on the shield from 20% to 64% with my skills. That is a lot of damage that you won't have to repair.

Very necessary, can deflect 50% or more damage coming your way giving your shield recharge an easier time..even one invulnerability does a loy of good

No, see, you have to ARMOR tank a Drake. The shields are a lie.

Lots of people like to put shield hardeners on, but if you skill up the "xdamage shield compensation" skills the passive "Resistance amplifiers" are much more effective. They also have easier fitting requirements. You need to get the xdamage shield compensation skill to level 3 before they do a better job than the hardeners, but if you have the skill to 4 or 5, and are using T2 or faction, they are far superior. |

No.
Compare: Ballistic Deflection Field II — 55% Kinetic resist bonus. Kinetic Deflection Amplifier II — 37.5% Kinetic resist bonus (at no skill)
The Kinetic Shield Compensation skill increases the bonus of the KDA by 5% per level (25% at Lvl V), for a total of 46.9% — still well below the bonus of the BDF. It's close, granted, and at lower fitting and cap costs, but still provides less protection.
I suppose the confusion is that +5%/lvl bonus — it's not added the the resist amps' bonus, but a (multiplicative) bonus to the bonus. It's not (37.5 + 25)%, but 37.5% + 1.25. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

Yes, rat specific shield hardeners/amps become essential during Level 3s.
...this doesn't even seem to be a regular case of rats fleeing the sinking ship. Seems more like the rats are on fire, the ship is on fire, and the sea is full of drunk Russians. - Jacob Etienne |

passive stuff doesn't use cap which is always good especially for pvp if you get neuted
they have its uses but for best effectiveness it requires the right skill to be trained up |
