I just bought a mac book pro with a 256gb solid state drive. I was wondering if anyones noticed a performance increase with SSD over the 7200rpm traditional drives.

I haven't got one but from what I read, the SSD should give a performance boost because it fetches the data faster, but the bus speed is less and in practice it probably evens out. But I can't remember if that was for all the latest models or it might have been just the review for the latest MacBook Air build

The current MacBook Pros shipped with firmware that limited the bus speed to 1.5Gbps. Apple has already released a firmware update which pushes the bus speed back up to 3.0Gbps.

does this firmware update install automatically through software update or do I have to do it manually?

looks like it might be manual http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3561
seems that Apple are saying that even though they're releasing the firmware update to enable the faster transfer rate, they're not going to officially support it (probably why the firmware isn't being released via software update) i'd still like one of these MBPs though, whether they support it or not :D
