I was in low sec and was attacked by a couple of rats. I think they were Guerista Nihilist ships. Anyway I fire missile after missile at them and no effect. Not one bit of damage showing on the shields or anything. So I turn loose a couple of drones (Hammerhead I) and they pop in like 30 - 40 seconds. So, at the risk of missing something really obvious, why didn't the missiles have any effect? They are heavy assault and I watched them strike the target multiple times. Any info appreciated.

How far away were your targets? Heavy Assaults have very limited range and also don't deal much damage on moving, small targets.
They could also have been using Defender Missiles (IIRC rats can do that), but that shouldn't be enough to block all your missiles. ___________________

Intigo. Thanks for your reply. I think the working range of the whole thing was about 15 - 17 klicks. I see now that just because I see explosions where my missle meets the target ship does not guarantee damage. For longer range I think drones will do fine. My skills there are fine. Thanks again.

Probably a silly question, but are you sure you were using the right missiles? If their resists are high against the missiles you are using, you will not damage them.

Excellent question but I would think no mater what their resists they would not be immune to the missile damage. I should see some red on their shields after they have been "hit" with over ten missiles. The reason I put quotes around hit is that due the first reply I got I am unsure if I was using them out of their optimum range or if the targets were moving too fast to hit.

Edited by: Jade Mitch on 02/07/2009 15:22:58 The description hints at the fact that heavy assault missiles stink but the name "Heavy Assault Missile" can be very seductive and misleading. Perhaps they should be renamed to something like "Heavy Anemic Missile". |

Jade,
I agree that name is misleading.
After doing some reading (something I should have done before posting here) it appears that the HA missiles have a range of about 9 klicks (based on velocity x max flight time). Since I was shooting them from over 10 klicks I shouldn't see any effect other than them fizzling out. Nice way to waste ISK. I will switch to HM's and tech II lauchers. It looks like this will be up close and personal if I want to use the missiles. That's ok I can always use my drones for any distance stuff. Thanks for all the replies.

Missiles have to accelerate to full speed. So decrease your theoretical max range by 1-3km. Oddly, missiles will fly out and explode to the theoretical range, but not do damage.

My guess is Caracal.
There are a few things that might be happening:
-Defender Missiles (yes, NPC's use them)
-Target Velocity: they might be going fast enough to escape most damage because of explosion velocity of the missiles
-Damage Type: the nice thing about missiles is that you can choose which damage type. You should be able to find out quite easily what type rats need what kind of damage to be taken down, it's in every second person's bio, so it seems.
-Range: if you're out of range, you obviously won't hit. However, I would think that if missiles never hit, then you wouldn't have seen missile explosions, and you wouldn't have gotten damage notifications popping up

Edited by: Dame Vaaki on 02/07/2009 19:11:01 If the target exceeds the missiles Explosion Velocity, there's a damage reduction. if the targets sig radius is SMALLER than the missiles Explosion Radius, there's a damage reduction. If both are true (as in the case of a Interceptor being hit by a torpedo, for example) there's a DOUBLE damage reduction - to near zero, in this case.
I believe thats it.

Da Guantanamo: I was flying a Drake with six HAM's and two Hammerhead I's. Ballistic Control modules but no drone link aug or anything special for the pet birds. My drone skills are my strength right now but I like the look of missiles in a fight so I am working those skills up. And for clarification this character I am posting under was not the pilot when this happened. This character is an alt and the main character pilot was Caldari.
Logan Xerxes: Thanks for the accurate max range. Can you point me to the formula that allowed you to come up with that range estimate?
Dame Vaaki: What you describe sounds like what I was seeing. Impacts and explosions but no damage. Thanks for the link I will study it. Like most things, when in doubt, read the instructions.
Thanks to all for the very useful answers and feedback. Tyrone

Range for missiles is calculated by (missile velocity* flight time) - 5%
