One thing that has always bothered me in EvE is the way negative impacts on your ship seem to be inconsistently displayed.
For example...if you get jammed/tracking disrupted/sensor damped, you get a nice little timer bar indicating the duration of the effect (but you aren't necesaarily sure of the exact effect). If you get scrammed you get nothing (unless you try and warp). If you get webbed or neuted or nos'd there is a graphic display of some kind, which allows you to tell the various effects apart to some degree (apart from your cap draining, or your velocity slowing down).
Is the reason for this sort of inconsitent display mechanism to allow for player skill to have a role, or am I missing the "negative effect display panel" somewhere?
I was reading a guide today that was talking about FC's calling for a retreat and asking for those who are scrambled to X in fleet chat. Made me think there must be some way to tell that without clicking warp. Is there?

Scrams and Warp Disruptors do show up on the overview when NPC's are doing it. I'm pretty sure the same applies to players. There's an option to enable/disable certain types of EWAR on the overview panel. Warp disruption / scram is one of them. It may not differentiate between the two, however.
The completely fail-safe method is try to warp, even if you aren't aligned to anything. If you have messages turned on you'll get "external factors prevent you from..." or similar.

I've seen the place on the overview setting where you can set those colours for all those effects. I guess I need to pay better attention to the overview. Any idea where those indicators show up spefically on the overview?
You get the general agression bracket "[]" which blinks red then goes solid red, and the locking bracket "[]" which blinks yellow during locking then goes solid yellow when you are locked. Do the EWAR effects use another set of brackets altogether? I've just never seen the things...I did set them up with different colours at one point.

The indicators do not have their own column on the overview. When an enemy ship (both player and NPC) is using EWAR on you (this includes Warp Scramblers), the appropriate icon will be displayed at the far right of the overview line for that ship.
You can set which, if any, EWAR indicators you want displayed via your overview settings.
For more information on overview settings, you can refer to the in-game tutorial by hitting F12 -> Tutorials -> Your First Days -> Overview Settings.
You can also find more information here

Check your overview. It has columns, right? Name, distance, type, velocity, etc. Check the rightmost column. Does it disappear off the right side of the overview? That's your problem.
The icons for e-war effects appear to the right of the rightmost overview column, so you won't see them if your overview is "full" of columns. Remove some columns, or resize them, so there is extra space to the right of the rightmost one. When you are scrammed, there will be a little scrambler icon there.

"the appropriate icon will be displayed at the far right of the overview line for that ship"
Do you mean to the right after the other columns you have selected to display? No wonder I've never seen these icons if this is the case. I mean, after you get done displaying the Name/type/transversal velocity and so on, there is no room left unless your overview takes up half your screen. Perhaps I am misunderstanding you here, but from what you said it seems like you have to leave room on your overview to actually see the far right of a given ship line, which would require you to size the overview past the number of columns you have selected?

Thanks, Joe! This is what I have been missing all along.

It might be a good idea if CCP put in a EWAR column to dispay the icon so it's not such a mystery. I bet I'm not the only one scratching their head over this one. A little column on the left might be an even better idea.

It will show on the far right edge of the overview, overlapping anything else displayed there (sometimes making it hard to read.) Even if there's another column after it, that's off-screen, it should be displaying on the far right of the visible area of the overview.

It's certainly a good idea. There's a board dedicated to posting suggestions here. Be sure to read the stickies posted there concerning the rules for that forum, and make sure you look through to make sure someone else hasn't already started a thread with your idea, before you start your own thread.

And the answer is you're buying a supercap and Chribba isn't acting as broker.

It might be a good idea if they showed energy vampires and destabilizers in the column, like other e-war. But sadly they don't.

Me too.
And to a poster above, we've been asking for better EWAR info for over five years. It's taken them nearly that long to add the little bit to the Overview finally.

Give me a screenshot.
I would just like to know exactly what the EWAR notifications look like and where exactly they appear. (Even just 1)
One would think a screenshot could be found someplace in the tutorials or players' guide or somewhere. I've looked high and low and can't find a pic anywhere on the web.
It would also be nice to know what changing their color in the Overview settings does, and what the defaults are.
