i am trying to get a fit for an incursus and i noticed that everyone abbreviates module names, why? i've read through about 70+ posts trying to find out what an MAPC is and i am still none the wiser, why cant people just say for example: Ballistic control unit or power diagnostic, instead of BCU or PDU cos us noobs havent got a clue what you are all trying to tell us!
sorry about my rant, it just bugs me. so can anyone please inform me what an MAPC is please?

Micro Auxiliary Power Core.
Why? Because MAPC is much easier to type.

Because they're too damned lazy to type it... I've brought this up before as well as others have, I'm sure. I've been playing for about 2 years now and didn't know wtf an MAPC was. -------------------------- Wait, what now? Yes, I was Anubis Assassin, this will be my new main XD |

Same thing in every game, except EVE has a zillion more technical technicalities to sort through. If you can't figure these things out on your own, you'll stay a noob forever.

Aye I agree it might look VERY complicated to a newbie, but there definatelly is a proper reason why everyone use abbreviations.
First of all it requires less time to type/say (in case of voicecomms), this ofcourse is important because time is money. Secondly it also makes it faster and easier for the person you are typing/saying it to to understand. It takes less time to read PDS than it takes to read Power Diagnostic System.
Don't worry if you don't know them all, there's always people around to ask and eventually you will get the hang of it __________________________________________________

Seriously, how hard was it to ask? It took all of 4 minutes for someone to respond and now you know what they're talking about. Alternatively you could ask in local or join a corp.

Edited by: My LittleFriend on 04/07/2009 03:50:23 70+ posts for 1 acronym. you best re-evaluate your research methods.
acronyms are used everywhere in real life, one would think you'd be used to it.
PS: enjoy all of eve's fail acronyms, HAC = Heavy Assault Ship or the ones you already found in your OP, a BCU is a Ballistic Control System a PDU is a Power Diagnostic System

Use the glossary as suggested. "New" status wears out quickly, Eve is a very engaging game
Abbreviations are a natural phenomenon when communications are text based. It is simply not very efficient to type out everything.
At least most of us are not using that text-message gimp-spelling crap ..

Given that none of these items exist in game as you wrote them, they're still fail acronyms :P
IIRC PDSs and BCSs actually ued to be called units and later got a name change, hence the confusion, and saying HAS (which is the proper abbreviation of a heavy assault SHIP, as there is no category called heavy assault cruiser) would lead to even more confusion, so most people stick with HAC |

Edited by: TraininVain on 04/07/2009 12:42:07 It's kind of up to you to learn this stuff.
I mean I agree it's not super helpful giving a newbie loads of TLAs but people tend to refer to stuff like this for brevity so you'd do well to learn some of the more obvious ones.

As was mentioned before the acronyms are much easier to use than the full word. You will encounter different sets of acronyms in any mincrocosim you will come accross, EVE is no different.

BCS and PDS are correct, Ballistic Control System and Power Diagnostic System. Many people continue to use BCU and PDU though because everyone keeps using it...and when people keep doing something it spreads.
There is a unit though - the Reactor Control Unit (RCU). ---

someone already mentioned it earlier but there's a reason they're BCU/PDU. back in 04/05 they were actually called Units, not systems and so it was simpler to just keep the old acronyms.
to the OP - Acronyms are shortcuts. learn them. live them. love them. if not, well, ask someone else
