Just curious. I run 3-4 mini apps of my own creation. My skills are not much to brag about. But I had a couple of very specific needs and put these together to serve my purposes. They could probably be written better and are certainly not ready for 'prime time.'
But as I was working on one this weekend I realized that if I were playing in the same area in-game as someone else using the tool(s), it could cut into my in-game profits. So, I wouldn't want to really share them anyway. So I got to wondering how many other people are doing the same thing? How many people create their own apps and use them locally without any intent of sharing them? I wondered how many 'sweet apps' there are out there that people don't/won't share for whatever reason.
And the apps that are published...are they put out for public consumption for profit? Ego? or Benevolence? If an app is a sure-fire way to optimize in-game income, why would someone share it with other players? KB |

there are dozens of apps out there for use only by their owners. I have a few myself, and I know others who play the game much more seriously than I do that have their own.
Some share, some don't. It's not really about ego or profit margins, it's about making sure the game remains fun for them.

When I started to look into trading, I had a look at the available apps supporting the financial aspects of EVE. There were a few out there, but each one had some (minor) glitches that annoyed me. So I started developing my own app (EVEWalletAware). It was long meant to be used just by myself and not developed with making it public available in mind. I shared it with a few interested corpmates. They were the ones who encouraged me to release EWA to the public.
As I use a few free of charge 3rd party tools myself (the usual suspects like EFT, EVEMon), there was no question that EWA will be free of charge. This is my way of giving back to the community what I got there in the first place.
And, of course, someone saying "Thank you, great app." or even donating ISKs pads my ego quite well. -- EVEWalletAware - an offline wallet manager |

I've written some python scripts that make use of the API and a database. While those are not a big deal and only few hundreds lines of code, they are exactly matching my trading strategies. I guess a lot of people also use spreadsheets to a great degree for this. As these kinds of solutions are all very specific, it won't make much sense sharing them unless you also share the strategies and ideas behind the tools. And why would you want do to that instead of keeping an edge over your competition?
Other parts of the API such as map infos, character skills or member tracking are probably better for creating tools around them and make those available to others, since they are useful for almost everyone playing eve, but will not give anyone a real advantage.

I don't mind if people have an advantage from tools or other help I provide. Reasons for currently not releasing the several tools I wrote for this game so far outside of corp usage include not having the time right now to properly support them or even just to properly code them with installation routines and such for third party usage. Also often my own tools are special interest whereas there are usually general purpose tools already available.

If any dev would like to share their apps, BattleClinic would be happy to host them as well as forums for them as well.
Just putting it out there as we have a long history of providing a home for player built applications that's hassle free and gives a huge audience and user base. ------------------------------------------------- Search: Sky Grunthor |
