A year or so ago I asked what was the appeal of SGW going to be to the player on their forums.
From the players: You'll get to play in that universe, meet Teal'c, kick alien ass noob!!
From the Developers: You get to partake in the storyline of the show! (Translation the story is pre determined and no matter what side you choose the humans are always going to win in the end).
In short SGW is going to be another MMO that was made to take advantage of the fanbase of a preexisting franchise and deliver subpar content.... where have I heard that before? Oh right! Monolith and SOE did that with The Matrix Online.... On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

The company is/was facing money trouble, enough so that employees went about a month without pay (from last I heard) but by then the MMO was pretty far in development so the investors likely sunk more money in.
Then again you may be thinking of Stargate Alliance which was canceled. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

wasnt it due to copy rights which another company held and they couldnt reach an agreement so they shut it down

That was Stargate SG-1: The Alliance. It was days away from going gold, but the plug got pulled, and a legal battle broke out between the developers Perception and the publishers JoWood, eventually JoWood had to admit they had no right over the SG franchise and Alliance was solely the rights of Perception.

If thats the case then why wouldn't they try to work out some sort of profit sharing agreement instead of just canning a 99% completed project. Also, who was the idiot that green-lit a project they obviously had no claim to? CEO/DEV/PRES/MANAGER=FAIL Someone should have sat back and said...hmmm this might be a huge waste of time and money if we get sued over copyright infringement.

It was something to do with Perception almost going under, they had to lay off almost all of there developers on the project. Then they couldn't publish it, because JoWood and Perception were at odds at who owned the rights. It was messy, and sufficed to say MGM and the SG producers weren't not happy at the 'informal' cancellation. Perception still could modify the game and release it somehow.

All they'd really have to do (if they still had people working for them) is change a few skins, and re-name it Blargate PEW PEW Land!

Hrmph, might be better if it never sees the light of a computer display tbh. The show was all about campy sci-fi fun and it delivered in spades whereas an mmo will water it down to 'step through the gate to be welcomed by jaffa blasts so you can then run and gun to whatever current goal is in your quest log then hightail it back to the gate evading even moar jaffa blasts' level of play. Yeah thats never been done before.

It's neither twitch play or FPS, what you described occurs in all the Stargate Mods for HL2.

Doesn't matter what style of gameplay it is as it will all revolve around stepping through a gate and exploring whats on the other side. This will undoubtedly involve large numbers of jaffa warriors to sacrifice themselves to your xp bar as the current quest develops. The show was a character based show that a lot of times didn't involve jaffa or even stepping though the gate at all. You won't be able to replicate that in an mmo so all you have left are the action episodes. So unless they have some new way of interacting and telling a story in an mmo that doesn't involve killing 12 jaffa and nicking some alien tech then reporting back to stargate command I don't see it being any different than all the other mmos out there. Stargate just doesn't seem a good mmo candidate to me if they try to follow the series premise and don't reinvent the whole thing from the ground up.

The only time I'll play is when they allow you to play as a Wraith. Because the Wraith are the only antagonist that isn't outright evil. What, do you think they CHOSE to be life-sucking parasites dependent on human beings to survive? That's like saying a wolf is evil because it eats sheep. _________________
