tl;dr version: In CoH/CoV PvP areas, Hero and Villain players had evolved custom of chatting with each other while fighting NPC enemies for whatever PvE rewards you get for that, and ignoring the whole Heroes vs Villains thing. They called it Honorable.
Anyway, Professor gets a grant to grief them on the government's tab, and writes research paper about how hated he was for actually ganking enemy players in a PvP zone. Hilarity and death-threats ensue.
He used a rather effective and annoying attack: he'd teleport his target to safe zone where the target would get CONCORDed by the NPCs. He would not get any credit for the kill, but the target would get an experience debt that took several hours of play to work off.
I only wish I had thought of it first. -- The Theorem Theorem: If If, Then Then --

Edited by: Guillame Herschel on 07/07/2009 03:39:34 Ha! I was thinking exactly of GHSC when I posted that, and here you come with 1st in my thread!
It's not in the article, but I understand that the reason they fight NPCs in the PvP zone and not each other is because you get more experience points for fighting NPCs in the PvP zone than in the PvE zones. So the Heroes and Villains just kind of agree not to agress each other...
Hmmm... that sounds familiar..... -- The Theorem Theorem: If If, Then Then --

This sort of thing isnt that surprising to me. MXO suffered the same thing to a certain extent. PVP was alive and well but when it came to the "constructs" (the leveled pvp zones) everyone wanted to hold hands and harvest the bosses loot instead of compete for it.
This is really just true human nature asserting itself. Instead of needlessly competing with one and another for plentiful resources humans will invariably form groups, alliances and what have you to harvest said resources and will instinctively attack any threat to that situation. After all its instinct to seek the least dangerous route to obtaining your goals (that said so long as its against a weaker opponent violence is an option).
Its only when one group has a higher degree of those resources than that of others that the combative aspects begin to surface. Eve in my view is the closest thing to encouraging this sort of situation yet still remain a fun game to play. Resources such as the various moons and even asteroids that are scattered about is done so in an unequal way. One region may be moon rich while another may be very barren.
Games like COH/V I imagine lack this unequal dispersal of resources and the combative nature in most individuals is for the most part not encourages.
Then again I could just be spouting a load of horse **** and have no idea what im talking about. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

That's not even the case in CoH though. The areas they're talking about are PvP zones (level bracketed) with not much more in them than standard NPC mobs and both instanced and open-world missions. Heroes and villains each have a base where you enter the zone and respawn on dying. They may also have an NPC mission giver and a merchant for 'inspirations' (basically potions). There's no uber-resource getting camped 24/7.
Dying in CoH/V carries only an experience debt penalty, whereby half of further experience goes to pay it off and you still earn half. In other words you get half exp for a short time after (usually a single mission, or even the bonus xp from completing the mission is enough to eliminate one death's worth of debt). You cannot get more than 5 death's worth of debt and there are ways of reducing it and getting rid of it faster.
The thing is, that said you don't get any debt when killed by another player. You actually lose nothing except the time it takes to heal, buff up and travel back to where you died. That's why that article really surprises me. Every game has unwritten rules, just like society at large, but one guy disrupted the status quo and all hell breaks loose. Noone likes getting ganked, but death threats seem OTT. That his peers stood around watching...noobs. PvP is quite scarce as it offers little by way of reward so...
The only reason to PvP is for fun but due to the nature of character builds in the game it's very rare to have a close-run, interesting fight. One build will simply totally dominate another whilst it in turn will be dominated by a third. And as you can't change your main powers after character creation you'll never be able to get around that. The mastermind class for example is the best PvE class bar none (depending on power choices)...it's a pet class (like a Dominix in Eve or a WoW hunter) so the player is always safe. However in PvP the pets are simply ignored and the mastermind killed in 2 hits. An entire class almost (but not totally) useless against other players.
The best thing they could do I think would be to have a PvP system similar to Battlegrounds or Wintergrasp in Warcraft, allowing players to earn points/tokens/etc for PvP achievements, offering rewards for taking part. Different game types would keep things interesting, give all classes a role to play and encourage team work. As it is now it's as pathetic as an Eve gate camp. -------------

Nah he was rping a good hero who only killed the bad guys. He didn't smack talk or bait anyone from the looks of it. He simply played the game strictly accourding to the game mechanics and not some metagaming 'cooperation' to grind for maximum xp and loots. Besides the goonies would have camped every pvp area with multiple characters and been as insulting as the eula would permit and still let them play.

I did the same for a while in a game called Air Rivals. Another faction vs faction game involving flying and obnoxious korean grinding, and ofcourse people of both factions would hold hands and level together without killing eachother. I would fly in, kill people of the opposite factions, chain wars into that area and make it completely uninhabitable until I disappeared (sometimes the enraged players would start shooting upon other people of my faction they were peacefully leveling with, causing an endless spiral of revenge-actions and war).
It was pretty funny, but I was soon turned into a pariah. I believe there was a lack of death threats because the official forums were heavily moderated, and inter-faction communication was impossible in-game. IMHO that article is quite biased. There are PvPers in CoH/CoV, and it is an accepted way to play the game (some people co-operate across the lines to get their hands on Shivans/nukes/etc, but they accept that they might get ganked while doing so). But Meyers basically did the CoH/CoV equivalent of undock games/loggofski or camping low-sec gates in a mothership (back in the pre-HIC days). Technically legal, but yeah. Nothing that a self-respecting PvPer would do. ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. It's given freely and only grudgingly withdrawn. |

Back in '05, I got nine separate death threats, a few via email, one via my home phone number stating they knew where I lived and were going to kill me in my sleep or something.
In 2006 I went to fanfest to see if anyone would have the sack to do anything.
I'm still here.

You can read the report of his "research" here. It's chock full of tales of nerd rage that startled a hearty chuckle out of the calcified, incinerate husk that used to be my heart. (You also get a deal more fuller of a story from the report than the news articel allows you).
That said, he has a degree in mass communications, so really, he is the loser here.

That's probably why he doesn't play. In CoH he's infamous; here he'd be just another nub pirate - and people would be both able and willing to shoot him back.
