Having read the new dev blog there was a comment made by a player with a response by CCP Explorer:
Originally by: CCP Explorer
Originally by: Caldreis While I would love to be able tell different between bpc/bpo. Why would the performance impact be bad without going into it too much?
The Inventory System is highly scalable but also very generic. So for each blueprint item it only stores the type of the blueprint, but not BPO vs. BPC or the levels. That information is stored in different tables based on the itemID and we don't want to query those tables every time a hangar is opened. Rather we only query them when you specifically a show info on the blueprint or when we need this information. This request has been noted and we will implement it when we find a suitable solution that performs well.
While this was directed at being able to tell the difference in game between a BPO and a BPC, I was wandering would it be possible to provide an API based on those details? Even a cache timer matching the Assets API of 23 hours would still be an enormous help to people who have literally hundreds or thousands of blueprints scattered among their assets.
At present, there's no real way to distinguish in the assets API between BPO and BPC (as in game) and although the Industry Jobs API can help to a certain extent, it is rather limiting as you need to have researched/manufactured with the blueprint for the details to register.
Is this feasible? Any support for this?

I would love to see any feature that could even remotely help me in maintain my Blueprints.
BP API sounds great! could this be done?

From a DBA standpoint this is not a hard task... maybe a little laborious but nothing like writing procedures to take care of Terminated employees in a LDAP database for UPS.... I hate my job!

I believe I remember long ago when this came up there was also a comment by someone from CCP that the DB servers that contained the needed information aren't accessible from the API servers for some technical/security reason and the always present concern of server load caused by the extra queries. This is not to say I wouldn't also like to have an API with this information but much like with the problems with POSes and their modules it would require a change to server config and/or method used to manage the information which is not something you do without lots of thought when there is a few 100000 users that are effected when something goes wrong Hopeful between the new corified and the new backup system it will allow them to make some more of this information available to the API servers.

Let's look at an example on this 100 BPOs * 50000 players = 5000000 queries alone or put another way approx. 60/sec more queries for a 23 hour cache time. That is a noticeable amount of extra queries even on the large scale hardware that they use for Eve.
Anyway that my 0.02 isk on it -- Finds camping stations from the inside much easier. Designer of Yapeal for Eve API.

So I assume there's some kind of (internal) API that accesses the DB server, and the (public) API is just wrapping that. Even so, the Science & Industry window has a Blueprint list that gives you *just* BPs with their ME/PE/original flag. There must be an efficient method of getting the data.
Regardless, /signed. This needs to be added! --- Owl |

Anything and everything that makes blueprint and research more manageable would be a good thing. I'm curious though (and also not a computer guy, forgive me), would it make any difference to change blueprints from items in a hangar to some sort of "file cabinet" UI? That is, you would have something along the lines of the manufacture/research UI, that listed every bpo/bpc you owned. Perhaps even do away with the idea of blueprints as physical items (really, do you need paper printed blueprints in such a high tech future?) if that helped the DB issues.
Perhaps another approach (again, i really don't know programming stuff) would be to just create an entire pool of items that cover all the possible me/pe combos. So instead of a blueprint having to be read each time, its just an item who's properties are known.
I find it difficult to accept the "its hard, we'll think about it" response for such a core feature of the game. |

i think the solution is just client caching, but CCP wont allow due security reason ( -> find a secure one) so the client is fetching every time the info from server when u lookup blueprints @ S&I

Good idea and would make creating all of those BP's in Battleclinic less painful. :D We already have market orders through the API and available to view on Evemon (another nice feature of API). ------------------------------------

Edited by: Absinyth on 16/06/2010 14:20:10 There's already a way to see if a blueprint is an original vs copy and what the levels are. Science & Industry window --> Blueprints tab. It takes few seconds to load but nothing I would complain about, not even close. There's even a Corp Blueprint tab you can see the same information for any blueprints in the corp hangers, if you have the appropriate permissions/roles.
Sounds like the Blueprint API that is being suggested would be mainly useful for offline viewing which if you need to look on the information about your blueprints, just log in the game or wait till you get home. I rather not have this developed if it's going to cause lag, DB errors, problems, or stability issues. Just use the Science & Industry window -- problem solved.
