It is relatively well known that if multiple pod pilots were to inhabit the same ship, then the DB freaks out.
But my question is: Why doesn't the Database freak out when multiple people are in one station? ------------------------------------- My other alt is a Ferrari

Simple, really. Each person in the station is a separate "instance" of the station, while the ship is simply an object designed to hold one client, not two or more.

Then isn't it possible to have multiple instances of one ship, just that what one person does, all the others do automatically, and the other Non-controllers are invisible on the overview.
Sure, it will create lag like it is 2 ships, but its either that or two ships anyway. ------------------------------------- My other alt is a Ferrari

How would you calculate skills effects on said ship? This is the very thing that causes a DB freakout. There's also the matter of the server having to control what the client does (locking, activating mods, etc), which I suspect would be a source of horrendous lag.
Is this a stealth suggestion of having a co-pilot?

All of them get the bonus from the main guy.
And yes, it is a suggestion for co-pilots, just worded differently to keep the trolls away. ------------------------------------- My other alt is a Ferrari

For one thing, stations don't move. Having multiple instances of a moving ship would be a real pita. So that's probably the main reason not to do it.
I do admit it would be a great idea, especially with cap ships that can carry smaller ones. Being able to ride along would be great.

I think your real question is a feature request: if I understand correctly, you'd like to be able to pilot a ship while another pilot who hasn't ejected from the ship is idle, so you can share a ship without having both pilots active to exchange it.
Creating such a feature would be technically possible but an awful lot of work because of the impact on a lot of other things and completely illogical from a game design point of view. Without any further explanation of why this would be a useful feature (not only to you, but for a lot of EVE players), this is something I'd rather not have Devs spend any time on. They have more useful things to do then answer silly and indirect feature requests. _____________________________________

There was a old dev post (2 years ago) about having multiple people in the same ship. The problem (from memory) is that each player is a object (say level 1 objects), things like ships (say level 2 objects) sit under them in the data base structure with things like ammo and modules (level 3 and 4) sitting under the.
Then level 1 objects are placed in a level 2 object or two or more level 1 objects try and own a level 2 objection, the data base gets going into a loop and crashes as the object structure cannot cope.
Things like stations, moons etc are not owned by plays and sit in there own structure, with players pointing to the location.
Based on my limited understanding of databases and my recollection of the 2 year old dev post, is all down to database structure.
If CCP built a new object like a ship using the station structure there other dependencies like being able to move and control it. In theory CCP could build a ship similar to a POS (corp owned ship) were you need specific roles to access functions, the problem would still be one of control as you can only have one pilot etc.
I did see an interesting idea for a multi-player cap ship, that while one ship acted like a joined group of sub ships, some you each person controlled a specific module, so for example there was a pilot module, if the player logged out another player had to dock with the module to control the ship's movement. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Think of the docked list like a who's in local list and the docked background as an alternative to a space background.
I think that's pretty much who docking works, you're not really inside anything.

Well, then make it like a mobile station, and give one player the ability to control what it does.
CCP might have to change the station's code to allow stations to dock with eachother and move though. ------------------------------------- My other alt is a Ferrari

You can always find a workaround or change the database if you really want to, but I doubt CCP will put any resources into this great idea...
