How does CCP hire? Does anyone know? I mean, hypothetically if I were one of those people who got a degree in networking or programming, how would I land a job with CCP?

ummm....off hand....
I'd say the same way you apply for any other job. Build a resume, lie about your experience and work history, create a generic cover letter stating that since the day you were born you wanted to work for a company that operates an MMO. Sigh...what else....ummmmmm....wait six months to find out that there were 200 other applicants vying for the same two open spots with much better fake resumes....and all 200 of those people actually lived in the country of Iceland. Give up in despair. Procure a position teaching 7th grade social studies in a Mississippi public school. Become depressed, fat, go bald....then finally die.
Thus completes the "circle of life".
Much luck to ya sport!!!!

I'm looking for information about what someone with a family can do about working in Iceland.
My wifes a Nurse and I've got a primary school aged daughter, would there be opportunities for them over there ?
If you can't respond here, is there someone I can email, send me an eve-mail if you don't want to post the information here.

You might want to look at Iceland and see what the country is like. It's small. Opportunites are pobably limited. It may be a great place for kids to grow up, but it may not be a good place to move to with the expectation of finding a job.

You're pretty close, but in the case of CCP there are additional requirements. You must know at least 3 people in the company that can (and want to) recommend you, and you won't ever find out "that there are 200 other applicants vying for the same two open spots" because CCP doesn't respond to every application sent in, only to those they think are viable for a position at CCP. Hell, I know for a fact they don't even look at all the applications sent in. |

There are no requirements to "know people in the company". If a person has a skillset we can use, he/she gets hired regardless if he/she knows ten people or none at all.

Welcome to RL tbh
Expecting every comapny to read all applications comming is highly unrealistic.
The key is known you got a good enough application sent in that they really get interested.

Yeah my manager throws alot of C.V's away mainly because most people handing them in have poors grades. He believes that if you didn't try at school to better yourself then why should he give you the oppertunity now.
Now with a record of unemployed for under 25 years olds for thoses that studied in school can now reap the benefits.
When will the credit crunch be over ....games are starting to go up already from ú39.99 to ú44.99 for most new games .

Your manager is an Idiot.
Back in university, I saw plenty of students getting high grades that couldn't code their way out of a paper bag. Not saying that people with good grades are bad programmers... Rather, the correlation isn't as strong as some assume.
What do you get if you have a student that does all their schoolwork to the perfection, and spends the rest of the time relaxing and doing stuff that are important in life? A student with good grades.
And what do you get when you have a student that does the spends enough time on schoolwork to pass, so s/he can spend the rest of the time writing code? A student that knows how to program.

He's not an idiot, he's right.
If you interview everyone who sends a CV why bother with them? You would never get anything done. I check for spelling mistakes and sloppy English If I see any it tells me the applicant either does not care or does not have attention to detail, so its bin time for them.
I run my own business and I can't afford to be a charity and give people a chance who have shown they are happy to throw those chances away in the past.

of which both of those people tried hard at school and got the grades. You never pointed out the fact that people that didn't get the grades at school, what about them? Would you accept them to your company to code ?

You know how you do? You require them to include code they've written outside of schoolwork. What they've produced of code beyond what was required shows not only their real skills, but also how passionate they are about programming.
BTW, you do know that writing good code is something you learn by doing?

Some of my best jobs evah were won with a healthy dose of 'padding' on my resumes. 9 times out of 10 the human resources manager can't be arsed to follow up on every detail so to the spinners goes the glory.

Wrong. It is pretty much the most vital part of the application if it is to have a better chance than a snowball's life expectancy in hell, to get looked at and/or considered, as CCP's hiring policies are too much based on biased clique connections rather than professional, unbiased standards. I'm not saying the former happens more than than the latter at CCP, but the simple fact remains that the former is prevalent at CCP. Which it shouldn't.
Let's not forget that being too lazy and/or incompetent to send a standardized reply along the lines of "We've received your application, but are not interested, thank you for your interest and good day" is a gross insult, considering that many of your applications come from overseas, from people that are willing to leave their homeland and either leave their families behind or take them with them to whichever CCP office they'll be working at. These are people that are willing to change their lives drastically to be a part of CCP...and you treat them like slime. And what about the few souls that (somewhat foolishly) take up a field of study with the specific intent to work at a company like CCP? They sure would look like fools if they spent 3+ years of their lives in a narrow and highly specialized academic field of study, only to find that their carefully worded and heavily revised CV is met by a wall of silence, wouldn't they? Unless, of course, they've spent their time wisely by building up connections to CCP staff to strengthen the chance of their voice being heard and listened to. Which, as everybody agrees on, should not be a required step. |
