First off all i'm more or less a newbie, so this was probably suggested a cupple of times (checked last 50 pages, didn't found anything, also tryed to google for anything simmilar). Oh and sory for my bad engrish.
Here it is: Distress call missions (solo)
I was thinking about new type of missions, which would spice up our travels through the universe. These missions would not be given by agents, but would become available to you, when randomly flying through solar system.
I. Mission window shows up, a traders convoy is under attack by vicious pirates. Right at start, player would have a choice. Should he answer the call or just ignore it. If he decides to help, he would just simply press accept button and a mission would generate in deadspace. If he declines, well no harm done except lifetime guilt that people died becouse you didn't answer the call .
1. Player accepted the mission, and he is now observing two groups of ships, one of them beeing merciless Pirates, the other traders. Which leads us to second choice player would have to make. All ships would be neutral upon entering the mission. Player would have to choose, if he wants to help traiders and kill the pirates, or join the dark side and help the pirates finish off traders and their escort.
2. Helping pirates. Upon killing traders, you would be entitled to a part of loot. You would also get standing increase towards that faction. (Solution to - 5 standing maybe?)
3. Helping traders You would recieve a reward for your effort, standing increase (if traders would be caldari etc.) and chance to loot all destroyed pirate ships
4. I want more! You helped traders kill all pirates, and they dare to offer you some puny reward? Missions like these, would allow player to ransom traders, or even kill them, taking all loot in the process, but you would lose standing towards both factions.
II. Ship full of scientists got stuck in anomaly, cloud of gas , etc, loosing all their sensors (could also be miners in asteroid field). They are blind, and are in no condition to fly their ship out of that anomaly.
How to save them? Player could enter the anomaly, flying his ship to the reaserch wessel, and use his tractor beam, to drag that ship out of the danger. He could also use a series of bookmarks, so other ship could navigate out. In the end there would be isk reward and a standard option to brutally murder them and taking their priced possessions. Who knows, maybe there would be a valuable blueprint hiding in that ship afterall .
III. Missions would vary in difficulty the same way as ratting. In 1.0 space there would be easy missions, for newbies, while brave heroes (or killers) would shed their blood in 0.0.
IV. I know some people would not like getting those missions randomly, as you could get one just when they are about to log out, or would not get any in days. There could be an option that would add a new tab to their journal, and would offer these missions.

Missions like this could be added with the exploration seeding. Effectively they're site with a public beacon where the first one to get there can help out. Once the site is tagged as cleared, it'll despawn and the public beacon disappears.
This would be a nice way to make the EVE universe feel more alive, imho. -------- Ideas for: Mining

Dude this is pure awesome. I wonder how much it would take for CCP to make it work. If it is viable then I think it should be done.

Glad you like it :).
When you think of it, there is a lot of different possibility's with distess call missions.
You could have a mission, where you would have to help evacuate a station, because of some danger. You could then drop them off at some safe location, or sell them to amarr slavetraders. Amarr will get more slaves (there is never enough of them anyway), you will get your isk, and rescued people will get a new place to call home. It's win win situation.

Very cool idea. How about simply putting it in local chat with the mission link there instead of a pop-up window? I know...everybody ignores local chat...just thinking a pop-up might be very distracting at a bad moment.

How about using Constellation chat? that way it gives more people a chance to do them, Heck I know I used to never leave Constellation chat open, this would give many a reason to use it. |

Alright, I have to admit I really like the sound of this.
However, what if ALL players in the system received the broadcast/distress call.
All players would be able to warp to the deadspace and either choose to help the NPC Convoy/Miners/Etc. or NPC Pirates, OR they could engage other players. I think this would only work in Lowsec/Nullsec, but if the mission rewards/loot was valuable enough, it could make for some really interesting PvP encounters and would encourage socialization (to team up/agree to a treaty for the distress call mission). You'd have to worry about getting stabbed in the back, but Lowsec/O.O is all about risk vs. reward, amirite?
Regardless, CCP should really think about PvE where they place the Player in a position to make a choice(s), morally grey or otherwise. I think it would really improve the PvE experience in EVE.

OMG, that would be a great thing, specially the general broadcast. Something where peeps do not have to even be in fleet, but it just auto goes by how much you are involved, ie if do 10% damage to an enemy, get 10% bounty. It could pop in, just like an escalation message does. Maybe even some random difficulty.
Aside from that chance at random excitement, it would also improve interpersonal reactions, just random peeps meeting to fight say some sansha fleet that is attacking a recon patrol. To further increase excitement, the pirate/npcs can be enhanced so they fight eachother. Almost like a defence mission.
Low sec, even taken one more extreme step, bigger combat broadcast over multiple systems.... But here, you start getting to choose sides, ie sansha from before can request your aid if negative security to take out amarrian outpost. Versa if positive. Then you end up with a pvp mission... Awesome.... |

Distress call style missions = pure win. Not only does it sound fun, but its like cross between exploration and regular missions. Also, the bit about possible addressing negative standings...definitely a start.
One of the few good "new" features I have seen in this subforum.

Got to say after reading it, it sure got a nice touch to it. And could have a nice potential next to only running agent missions. Would also introduce a system to get missions without agents. What also would be a nice bonus, more variety and more choices are all good in my books. |

Edited by: ArcticPrism on 24/07/2009 08:34:12 Edited by: ArcticPrism on 24/07/2009 08:33:41 So if you are going to a deadspace to assist something under attack, would the NPCs actually shoot the target and you have to save it? Or would there just be a bunch of ships floating outside a building like in regular missions? What about if you decide to help the pirates who are sieging a small group of ships, would they assist you in the destruction? Would your objective live/die if you do nothing? I know in some ded places(the beacon ones) I've seen ships frigates orbit a battleship that was patrolling. No enemies were in that room of course though.
What about difficulty? Would they be designed for solo? Or would some be tough and you need help? |

Great idea, IMO better if just an in-system broadcast rather than constellation though.
probably work best if these had a cap of "will not appear if there are more than X people in the system" - may cause issues if one were to appear in, for example, Jita...

Great idea! It might be a good way to revitalize some of the systems with very low population (since the ones in heavily populated systems would be done quickly).
...this doesn't even seem to be a regular case of rats fleeing the sinking ship. Seems more like the rats are on fire, the ship is on fire, and the sea is full of drunk Russians. - Jacob Etienne |

Nice idea, very original.
The number of different types of missions that could be generated from this are quite numerous.
You could even have some of the harder ones be something like a sleeper 'incursion' where sleepers come pouring out of a wormhole and you have to stop them

This idea is pure awesome.
EVE is made of awesome.
Therefore, EVE needs this idea.
I like the suggstion for constellation chat too. Perhaps have more difficult distress missions require probing - harder missions are harder to probe. I especially like the idea of giving players the opportunity to led support or prey on the distressed party.
Moral choices to make, indeed!

As someone who likes to run missions this sounds like an excellent idea 'In Theory'.
Though having a mission where you had to use a tractor beam to tow a ship out of a dangerous situation would be a tad difficult as 1.) the person would 'need' to have the tractor beam on the ship they were flying (not common) 2.) and more to the point tractors work on 'wrecks' and 'containers' not ships. A side issue is CONDORD in these 'morally grey' situations would you handle this as these deadspace bubbles being effectively null-sec with CONCORD taking no notice of what happens in them? I would really love to see how CCP would implement something like this.

Concord doesn't bust you either when you shoot enemies in normal missions (not even if they are other faction and not rats). Concord only reacts on players aggressing other players.
And for the pvp part I would point to my previous post, but spicing it up the npc factions can be even more interresting as they bring rennforcements after a set ammount of time. It takes a few minutes to assemble a rescue/attack team after all ---------------------------------- None of yet! |
