Originally by: CCP Atropos Out of interest, what method of teams selection would you all have gone for, and what are the benefits over both the random selection, and the previous 'window' method.
1) Some should be automatic invites based upon previous performance (I'd go with top 8 from previous Tourney) 2) Alliance which are considered "relevant" should get automatic invites (I'd go with 16 alliances that control the most stations, tiebreakers determined by number of SOV IV systems)
If one of the "Top 8" also happens to be one of the "Top 16" - then that would just open up another slot for "General Admission". After the invites have been sent out to the "Top 24", they get a period of time to accept and send in the Deposit (say a week or something). At that point open up registration to "any alliance", which could be selected on a first come first serve or random basis. If any of the "Top 24" did not register in their initial week, they'd still have the opportunity to register with the "General Admission" crowd - but given no preferential treatment.
Atleast this is how I would do it. ------------------------------------------------ There are only two types of ships: those which have blown up; and those which will.

The more I think about this the more I think CCP should just expand the scope and schedule of the event to handle ANYONE that chooses to enter. This is a major event for the Eve community and warrants the resources. Everyone that entered could have been accommodated with another weekend of matches.

see this woud be more like the kinda system the eve alliances community woud be better served with. it woud even promote ingame fighting (to get more stations)

I wasn't in an alliance that applied to the tournament, but had been looking forward to watching it on EvE TV. Way to take the wind out of the event CCP. I'm sure I'll catch a few of the matches still, but you barely have a handful of teams competing now that I'm interested in following.
In the future...
1. Honor all of the alliances that made it into the previous final 8. 2. Take the top twelve alliances not yet included after that by count of systems occupied. 3. Take the top twelve alliances not yet included after that by pilot member count. 4. Then randomize the 32 slots which remain, but restricting admission to alliances with 10 or more members.

The alliance tournament each time around seems to increase in popularity. As such CCP needs to scale the tourney to meet that demand. Extended qualifiers, sudden death knockouts, 128 slot draw, or whatever. There should be some criteria you have to meet to get entry, because I agree 10 member 1 corp alliances are not alliances. So what defines an alliance, for the purpose of the tournament?
IMO
- The alliance needs to be of a certain size. 50 members seems to be a nice round number that should indicate a real alliance, over an alt alliance.
- The alliance should have been formed a certain time prior to the tournament date. 3 months is probably fair. However this date has to prior to the announcement of the tournament. ItÆs to stop the ôhey CCP just announced the next alliance tourney, lets make an alliance and enterö.

To those who say 1 corp alliances should be allowed to "gain rep", note when these tournaments were created, alliances were fewer and only the serious ones lived. The purpose is to settle the score that is constantly discussed ingame on who is cooler than who, not for 1 corp to join an alliance and fail in the tournament, likely the majority will not even watch these fights.
Alliance Tournament is for Alliances that fight together, take space (or not), etc. to fight in a fair environment without hotdrops/blobs/etc. and get prizes/recognition for it. If CCP wanted a bunch of corps to start making alliances and signing up, they would make a Coporation Tournament.

sorry guys to point it out but its not an alliance its a corp
WE HAVE ALLIANCE IN OUR ALLIANCE NAME THE CLUES IN THE TITLE!
WE HAVE THERFORE ENTERED THE ALLIANCE TOURNEMENT!
If you have a problem with ccps defination of allaince take it up with them.
And to MM as a whole if you spent half as much time to bother creating a few reserve alliances, instead of spreading you emo tears everywhere.
Thank You & gd night!
Yes...because that's how it should be done...creating alliances for the sole purpose of getting into or increasing the chance to get into an alliance tournament.
Congrats on getting in, but is your "alliance" is an example of what CCP truly wants to see in their "alliance tournament" then the tournament really idea really has seen its best days.
This isn't to say you guys aren't fine people and/or great PvPers. You might well be. I'm saying this notion of single-corp/alt-"alliances" getting into the tournament in front of actual, long-standing alliances with an an actual tournament history is well below optimal in my eyes.
RAWR used to be a small, unknown alliance and it burst onto the scene a few years back through a pretty good showing in the tournament (for a ubnch of LARPers), so I'm sure they appreciate what it means to smaller, unknown entities. However, even at that time, RAWR wasn't an alliance that was created for the sole purpose of securing a tournament bid. They had multiple corps, approached a thousand pilots and actually held 0.0 space (though I don't feel "space-holding" in and of itself is necessarily a requirement...it's merely a single proof of bonafides as an alliance).
I'm not sure what the best option is...but RANDOM isn't it. Not when alliances like RAWR are excluded as a result.

EVE Online - a massive multiplayer online dicerolling space game Will you be lucky? Sign up today and found out!
Or here's an idea, maybe a PVP tournament should be about PVP skill.
Originally by: CCP Atropos Out of interest, what method of teams selection would you all have gone for, and what are the benefits over both the random selection, and the previous 'window' method.
Seriously, how hard can it be to accommadate 17 more teams? Assign more resources, add another weekend, run 2 matches simultaneously, whatever. You're still treating this major event like it's some amateur favour to the community, like it's 2005, EVE has 1/3rd the subscribers and you have a budget of $50, and only that much cos all CCP went without biscuits for a year cos "damnit the tournament matters more"!
It's a much loved event, and with subs from 300+K accounts I'm sure the resources are available now to do it justice. I've paid what.. 350 euros (or dollars or something) in the past year to play this game. And something like a quarter million dollars in total from all RAWR members, and for the second time you can't find a way to fit us in to the main, nay only, official ingame event EVE now has? It's a step backwards from 2005.
We can continue with these pointless discussions every 6 months about various methods of picking, comparing different types of alliance, the "what would you have done" questions, comparing the merits of one broken system with another broken system, and vague excuses about scheduling OR you can just accept the situation is bonkers and figure out how to make it work properly. I don't doubt there are difficulties but I do know you guys are capable of making this work if you stop turning those difficulties into immovable obstacles.
Or at least point us to whoever makes the budget descion for the alliance tournament as a whole, so we can argue the case with them directly. _

nail on the head comes to mind
also when i see a csm selling his alliances slot right after the draw makes me think what a total mess the tourney is in
how can we trust ccp to do anything right when our csms treat the tourney as a huge joke and as a profit making event rather than the pvp
i just hope that next years event if there is one because after this years i doubt anyone will take it seriously
again great job ccp claw

It may be a bit counter-productive to be bringing all these complaints up after the fact. There was plenty of advanced notice about this system, and it may have been worth discussing sometime before today. Admittedly there was some concern over the random draw over the last several weeks, but not much. All of a sudden, once it's over and done with, some people don't get their way and its a mountain of whining. Sorry, but whether it would have made a difference before or not, it's definitely too late now. |
