Some advice please, if you care to help a relative exploration noob.
In 4 days I'll get the cloaking skill to level 4 and be able to use the fancy cloak with no speed penalties in a Helios. I have hacking and will soon get archeology, so my idea has been to head over to w-space and try to do some sneaky hacking and arch under the noses of the sleepers. From what i read this is not without challenges due to clouds and sleepers seeing through the cloak sometimes, but it's unclear how tricky this is.
So my question is, how hard is it to stealthily hack in w-space and is there any other lucrative stuff to do with a cloaked Helios...?
Many thanks.

impossible I'd say - you'll be uncloaked and popped when you get to close to either structure or ship and you cant use any mods when cloaked anyway _ _ _

some advisor here :P you wanted some advice ^^
its possible if you have another buddy farther away from the site. at least i had some success, sleepers kept going back and forth but never actually attacked me.
you may or may not be in luck :P

I'm not sure how pointing out that putting a covops into w-space and trying to hack a can in a live site will get you popped is not advice
There are numerous other ways to do it but a solo covops is not one of them _ _ _

Well, since your cloak doesn't break till 2000m, and you can loot wrecks from 2500, you can probe out a mission and loot the wrecks, causing confusion to the mission runner :)

Can confirm that probing out a site and going for a look-see even at 70km out may get you popped in W-space. Happened to me w/o any warning (the post-Apoc borked sounds added to the dilemma, no indication whatsoever my cloak had deactivated).
Be ready to lose your ship if you decide to sneak and peak around in WH space.

What's fun to do in a cloaked covops ship?
Well, I do fly a cloaked covops Tengu, and it's pretty fun hijacking someones combat exploration site, sneaking up cloaked and taking out the faction target/trigger. It's also pretty lucrative ;)

Get alt/friend with a orca, go to a busy system with plenty miners, use covops to scan down miner with jetcans, bookmark jetcan, go back to the orca, switch to a deep space transport, warp to can, nick ore, warp back to orca, drop off ore, switch to covops, repeat until orca is full. -------- Ideas for: Mining

I'd also go with the pretty impossible answer.
You can't hack anything with a cloak running, and as people have said, there are lots of things to bump your cloak off (Structures, clouds, debris)
The best thing to do is probing out mission runners, PvP targets and such since you can get right up on them and disrupt them right out of cloak.

as aditional info: cans in hacking/archeology/salvaging sites can't be opened with NPC around and most cans spawn NPC when you close in. they can be hacked for example, but you can't access the content if there are NPC around. doesn't matter if you're cloaked or not, the spawn will appear, but if you're cloaked they'll not lock you
so, what's the covops good for? probing. and that's about it. my covops has a warp disruptor and a salvager on it. so if i am in gang with mates and i want to "suicide-tackle" something, can. i say "suicide" coz if u tackle in a covops, you'll probably end up dead. and the salvager is because many times i enter a (empty) system with some nice NPC wrecks or pvp wrecks on gate. i can switch the salvager for a cyno, but i don't like to cyno in my covops, as i'll be a sitting duck for 10min. a t1 frigatte is better imo.

OP, I see you have fallen into the trap that many wannabe exploring hackers have fallen into. Many pilots start into this profession thinking they are going to be warping around the universe cloaked and sneakily cracking codes and unearthing secret stuff- in a "Mission Impossible meets the Matrix" sort of way. You see yourself cracking open GSC's and pilfering their contents, hacking into corporation and alliance databases, POS's, Jump Bridges and hangars- stealing info and Titans, undetected of course, while at the controls of your trusty CovOps ship with Codebreaker module blinking away.
It ain't like that. It's more like using a salvage mod on a wreck. Point click wait, wait some more, open can, retrieve contents (or it's empty) Tada!
The good news is, once you put the fantasy away, hacking and archeology are part of an overall fun and reewarding profession. The sites you have to clear, wether in W-space or K-space are challenging. The lower the sec rating of the system the more challenging and rewarding. Sometimes you get nothing and sometimes you fly away with a billion isk payoff.
The other good news is that as a CovOps pilot you can be of extreme value to your corp or those that need scouts. Watching and reporting on your enemies activities, BMing their assets prior to attack, scanning out thier safes is alot of fun. Scouting gates for a valuable cargo shipment is worth it's weight in isk.
Another great use for CovOps that I have found is it's a great high value/small item cargo runner. I used to haul Morphite from Null Sec to Empire in my Cheetah. 20 jumps each way- never got caught once. You can throw a couple T2 CargoExpanders in the low slots to expand your capacity.
Last good thing about CovOps skills is that they almost directly translate to flying Blockade Runners- very profitable.

Edited by: Ekim Torn on 23/07/2009 13:04:23 Thanks to all for the eye-opening comments; the quote below was exactly what I had in my mind so you've saved me a lot of frustration. I guess the exploration profession is best served by a two ship combo, one for scanning out and eventually hacking the sites and the other for combat. The only use for covops is the scanning bonus. Another question that springs to mind is whether there is a single ship that is good for both combat and probing/hacking to save on switching all the time.

Alas, the only bigger ship with a scan bonus are the T3 Strategic Cruisers with the appropriate subsystem. Let's hope CCP got inspired by my ideas for a cruiser sized T2 Explorer Class and adds something like that in the (near) future. |

It's not particularly profitable, but I have great fun getting my voyeurism on wandering around lowsec and wormholes, looking for stuff to pinch, and just meeting people :) 0.0 has been good fun too, although I seem to have bad luck walking into 0.0 conflict zones, and get stuck waiting for bubblecamps to clear, which is kind of boring.
In terms of lucky opportunities, I have managed to run off with drones, and gear from gatecamps, along with the standard ninja salvage you find around - but its more just fun to explore :)

Make a safespot at capital of some major 0.0 alliance, give out intel, hang in local chat, with some luck you may even tackle and kill lone miner/ratter when few ppl are online. They'll be damn ****ed by the fact you're flying in their home system unpunished.
And no, there's no practical way to find cloaked ship on safespot.

Get in a Stealth Bomber and sit on enemy jb's, when a hauler comes thorugh decloak, scram and fire off as many torps as you can before the guns start shooting, i usually fire off 3 volleys which is enough to pop them, killed an itty 5 carrying 4.5bil of stuffs one time :D

You can access all types of cans in W-Space regardless of how many spawns are around.
That being said, as soon as you drop cloak you will get 1 shot even in the easiest sites without someone to kite the spawns to over 100km away

Sleepers get very angry when you start hacking their cans. This will not work. Covops in WH space are good for recon of Sleeper sites (if you can warp in to a far away spot but you don't need a covops for that) and checking out a POS in the WH to see if it's online or not (and if not - you just struck it rich).

I've only been to level 1 to 3 WH's and I've never got close to being hurt by sleepers in my regular Heron as long as I go 100km. They often take ages to target and even if they do you have the time to warp out.
I'm training for cov ops for WH's but now I think that was not necessary, and scanning is easy in a Heron too with the right fittings.

survive gate camps and scout. heard probing is pretty hot aswell. sleepers will eat you. Had an fun episode trying to steal the loot of some geezers I scanned down in an wh, took less than 2sec for the few remaining sleepers to target me and just luck I got out alive.

I've made about 250 million thus far hanging out in a busy mission system, finding mission runners, swooping in and grabbing the stuff they leave lying around.
Helps keep my home system clean, though for some odd reason I get lots of curses and death threats.

What's fun to do in a cov ops ship?
scan out mission runners, and if they're using smartbombs, sneak up on them cloaked, let concord pop them, then feast on tasty faction loot.

Fun in a covops ship:
1. Probe a mission runner and warp to him 2. Find yourself in the eerie cloudy environment of Recon 3/3 3. ??? 4. Profit! (For the guy selling you your next covops and fitting ) And if you are reading this, you have arrived at the signature without noticing...

1. Spend about 2-5 weeks searching for someone who is about to drop a can to anchor. 2. Sneak up on him cloaked and sit about 3-4km away 3. Watch as he finds it impossible to anchor his container. 4. Follow him around doing this until one of you gets bored. 5. ??? 6. Profit!
This was one of the first things I did when I trained cloaking
