Hideyhi, capsuleers
When Auntie Pann comes out of the woodwork to post, you know things are heating up. I felt this was an important issue and wanted to speak with you personally about it, so here goes.
Over the last few days, the internet has been under attack by a tenacious group of keylogging little maniacs. It's important to note that this is not only happening to us on the EVE forums but in many other gaming communities as well. While this has probably help to boost Audrey B's career immeasureably, it's caused a lot of grief and heartache for many others.
We had hoped that the Captcha system we implemented earlier today would fix the problem. It did, to a large degree, but the problem hasn't been completely eradicated. We are exploring other options now and doing our best to find a solution that will cause our legitimate subscribers the least amount of inconvenience while shutting down the credit card info stealing little monkeys from doing more damage.
Unfortunately, it might hurt a little more before the pain goes away: We may need to take the forums down temporarily. We consider this a last resort but we're willing to do it if there's no other option.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, especially since we know that playing on the forums is a big part of the EVE experience for lots of you. We hope you will continue to bear with us and, please, don't kill the messenger. My mom told me I should be an accountant but I didn't listen.
Fly safe -- and don't click on shady links, Pann |

I think we've explored every option just shy of sending out ninja squads with bazookas. The trick is finding something that can be done quickly without causing our "real" customers too much inconvenience. As I said before, Captcha isn't cutting it.
(And, if it brings you some small measure of comfort, know that we're not exactly digging that, either, so we'll remove it as soon as a new system is in place.) |

There's already a one-minute timer between posts. Not sure if extending that between new threads would matter much - if they're banning people, then it's going to be a new character with a fresh timer that gets posted on anyways. |

Hello Capsuleers,
The forums have been re-enabled and we thank you for your patience during this maintenance period. After some discussion between various departments we have decided to restrict posting on all new accounts for at least the next 24 hours while a long term solution to this problem is designed and implemented. We appreciate that this may cause some issues for newly created accounts so we ask that you use the in-game ôHelpö and ôRookieö chat channels to have any questions on game play answered.
All newly created accounts can still browse the forums and read any current threads for ship set ups, mission or mining guides or starting your adventures in EVE Online. All accounts can also access our EVElopedia which has hundreds of useful articles for all players.
We thank you for your patience and understanding.

Are accounts being created soley with credit card fraud or are the accounts being funded with GTC's?

To be honest, the spamming only seemed to increase once the captcha system was put in place. The captcha system being used is not only fairly weak, but the people spamming the boards are humans and can solve captcha's all day long. They only need to solve it once and they can then go spam to their hearts desire.

Quick question, are accounts being created soley with credit card fraud or are the accounts being funded with GTC's?

While our investigation is ongoing it would not be prudent to reveal details at this time.
I can assure every player that we are doing everything possible to protect your account security and will continue to do so until this threat is eliminated permanently. |

Thank god your back up, just suddenly clicked on the forum link to find that OMGZ there are no forums. It has become a real pain that people would do this. Glad to see you taking more steps to gain control of the situation.
I hope your team comes up with something more permanent in the mean time the 24 hours probation posting should stop them for at least 24 hours anyway , to at least give the forum mods a break and i thought i just wore them out :P.
well i am going to go back to my posting :)
and cheers for the update Valerie, i have been awaiting a official response for some time now about the attacks. |

That really sucks for new players, but at least it should stop the spam for now.
On another note, I fully support the bazooka-wielding ninja squad idea. |

I haven't totally discounted the ninjas yet myself, and am even willing to downgrade from bazookas to blow guns if needed, but let's hope the other things we're trying will work. |

Please believe me when I say that I appreciate you trying to help and in no way should you take my response as a blow off of any kind.
Since this unusual situation is impacting on player accounts we must keep all information internal but Thank You most sincerely for your deire to help |

Since the problem is links and pictures how about we disable them for a while? Poasting pics is against the rules anyways and links can simply be copy pasted to the address window if someone really wants to see what it has. It's gotta be better than this annoying as crap captcha. |

If there was only a way to make suggestions, in private, that didn't end up in an unmonitored mailbox. I've had too many occurrences where information didn't get to the right people about problems in EVE.
I appreciate your response, though. And I completely understand. |

Can't ya just turn off all BBcode/HTML in the forums for now?
Captcha doesn't help since simple programs like the greasemonkey plugin for firefox has plugins to bypass captcha systems.
Also if a human is doing it then captcha still not going to be effective.
for now I think turning off the ability to use any bbcode and html would be the best, from signatures to everything.
that way no links, images, etc at all can be posted.

Suggestions:
1) Disable images that "break the forums", i.e. too wide or too tall. On second thought, this might not be feasible because the server doesn't know the specs of externally hosted images.
2) Btw did they already restrict the file extensions of images?
3) Do DNS lookup on any links. If they resolve to disallowed IP addresses, the links are disabled. Results are cached.
4) Some sort of cross posting detection.

Keep up the good work, I have every confidence in you! But please, these forums automatically logging you out every 2 minutes (and forgetting my image settings each time!) is getting annoying. |

Full support there!
I think shutting down the forums for a resonable amount of time to move them out of the frontline of fire, clearing up the mess and improving the defences is good, don't be shy with that!
And in any case I think it is better to shut down the forums for a while instead of installing some stuff like the captcha thingie which only annoys the community in the long run but won't solve the problem.
Anyway, good luck fighting back those criminals! |

Will nothing like making you have to put in your limited API *once* to "activate" your account for posting? Or at least have every time you click a link, it first goes to a Eve-O page that warns about keyloggers and links to this sticky. Cause as much as I like to be optimistic, people don't read stickies often. |

wahoo text only no graphics at all anywhere forums.
Ahh the good old days of the internet, where the pages contained words and the visitors could read as well as spell.
In support of the action to turn this forum into complete-text, I'm going to remove the link in my bio so people can see the address and copy paste it if they wish to do so*.
* Unless I have to go through three captcha's to do it of course.
