Hey, I recently started training towards being able to do missions in a Drake and a Raven(The char doesn't have very good skills, I trained very randomly[and very little] before Apocrypha patch). My current plan is to go for certificates, seems simple enough. Core Competency Standard, Active/Passive Shield Tank Improved, Cruiser/Battleship Launcher Control Standard and Missile Control Improved.. This will take a fair amount of time and I'm just going to sit at a station while doing so, playing other games. Already doubled my SP since starting.
But what I wanted to know was if anyone has any ideas for other skills I should add? I think I need Drone skills, but I've no idea what kind. Social skills for faster rep? Anything to help with mission running.. Thanks for any help.

start by running some missions in a frig | destroyer to get the hang of what you are doing, otherwise it will be an expensive mistake you make, in the past I've done all level 3's in an assult frig - though things have changed since then, but you don't have to wait to fly - and train skills why playing other things - make eve your life -- RaTTuS @ InEve, Capital Prints for sale |

Hmm, I suppose it appeared as if I was just starting out. I made this char in 2005 actually, I did start in frigates and destroyers and then moved onto a caracal and after that a ferox(before drake was out). But I never had any plans for my skills, I trained them at random. I played in random 1 month segments every now and then, hence the low SP even with a 4 year old char. But now with Apocrypha skill queue(which is great) and using EvE-MON I've been able to plot out a real plan and make it happen without the bother of logging in every 2 minutes to switch skills, which was the reason I didn't bother with it before and why my most basic skills are so lacking and yet have stuff like cruisers V. It was easier to just train something like that and not worry about it :l
Well, anyway. Hope that makes the situation a bit clearer. Not new to the game, just new to proper skill training.

Skills for T2 light/medium drones are strongly advised for Caldari missile boats.
A basic skillpack would be something like:
Drones 5 Scout Drones 5 Drone Interfacing 3 Combat drones 3 Drone durability 3 Drone navigation 4 EW Drone Interfacing 3 Gallante Drone Spec 3 Caldari Drone Spec 3
That's about 1M SP, and is really all you'll need for Caldari ships. Later on if & when you're polishing your skills get Drone Interfacing 5, etc.

Drake setup: Shield Flux Coil II x2 Shield Power Relay II x2
Shield Recharger II Invulnerability Field II x2 Large Shield Extender II x3
'Malkuth' Heavy Missile Launcher I x7 Drone Link Augmentor I Core Defence Field Purger Ix3
Hornet II x5
get shield management to 4 or 5 shield op to 5 the various shield resists to 4 Make sure you can field 5 drones and get their ratials upto 3 or 4
once you can use all that it should tank reasonably well anyway, then just look through the engineering skills for things that speed up shield recharge and give you more shield capacity.
the drake has a fairly hefty tank so running 2's in it will not be an issue at all, 3's should be pretty simple too. 4's are doable but they take a time with it's low dps. --
If there's no profit to be made you need to travel further afield.

There's my current 4 month plan. But I'm still wondering if I need skills like Connections and such? To get more out of missions.

Dont bother with the damage-specific shield comp skills, they're pretty worthless.

Certificates are broken, I'm able to passive tank every lvl 3 in a drake, i have 3 bcu's on it and i don't even have the basic passive tank cert.

To address a couple points:
Yep , a mil or so in drones will help a lot . 1.5 is even better and might be all a Caldari pilot ever needs for missions .
Drake and Raven are 2 quite different skillpaths. You should make a decision on the primary focus . Sounds like "focus" needs to be your goal for awhile . A true/serious missioner will fly a CNR and pump out lvl 4's like they were nothing.
Certificates should be secondary as a goal . They dont make you 1% better at anything . They will come in time by accident and they are kinda cool , but they don't make YOU an awsome pilot .
Social skills : yep , get them . Get the ones that apply to your agents . They are the only skills that help improve a missioners isk flow and LP gain. For long time missioners the amount can be 100"s of millions of isk .
If your just sitting in station and training stuff up , I recommend a little more learning SP . Maybe another mil , would help you quite a bit in the long run. More important tho...find an active corp and get out of the station a little.
Download EVEMON . Make yourself some training plans and keep them seperated . 1 for damage , 1 for defense , 1 for command ships , whatever. It will help you list and comprehend a path to take. I edit my plan titles to say "Command ship 35 days" or "kick ass guns 56 days" , "Ultimate goals 405 days" . Its a big help and just creating the plans helped me see whats important.
Good Luck Hope I helped a little

Edited by: Crystal Sevar on 28/07/2009 20:04:53 Well raven is the "big goal" for me at the moment, but raven and drake are both shield tanking missileboats, so I figured I'd be able to fly around with a drake in a few months while I finish up the BS skills, instead of going for a raven straight away. And I know the certificates themselves don't do anything, I just like getting them :x

On Social skills:
Social 5 and Connections 4 are worth it, but even level 2 or 3 in them helps a bunch.
I do a lot of missions for researc corps, and they have a lot of Advisory, Administration, Production, and Manufacturing, so I have the connections skills for all of those divisions.
The connection skill books give you up to a 50% LP bonus, and they are all rank 1 skills (about 5 days to train from level 1 to level 5) so you may want to get them to level 3 or level 4 for the division(s) you use most. If your goal is to run a lot of missions, then level 5 makes sense for the division(s) you use most.
