"Free" meaning able to pay for the game with in-game currency? I have two accounts (had three, dumped the third one as soon as ghost training was removed) and I haven't paid for them using real world currency for the better part of two and a half years now.
Not that I can't afford it, but $30 (or more, depending on where you live) a month is half my cell phone bill or another tank of gas (or half a tank if you're running a nice car and need 92 or 98 or heaven forbid 104 octane...).
I play Eve, I enjoy it, and it's the only MMO I play. For that matter, it's the only MMO I've ever really played (dabbled in a few others for less than twenty four hours). I don't play any other sorts of games that have subscription based fees.
Now, don't get me wrong, I *love* the fact that I can pay for the game time with in-game money. If I wasn't able to I probably wouldn't play. I'm not super rich in-game and the rising cost of PLEXes has made a larger and larger impact on my wallet, but it's still nice to pay for the game without having to use real world money.
So I was just wondering, how many other people out there pay for the game exclusively through in-game money, and how many of you would simply not play if this were not possible? |

I've played for 4+ years without paying for my time with a GTC. I've sold GTC's, but the only "free" part of eve for me was the "Power of Two" promotion a couple years ago when I got my second account for half price for the first 6 months.

While I still pay my subscription in Rl money, I still can admire the fact that it is one of many ways to earn a living in Eve - I argue, that if it wasnt allowed, eve would not be the same game it was.

Double negative hurt head! Try to decipher;
If EVE wasn't free, meaning EVE is free. Wouldn't play.
So if EVE cost money to play, how many of us wouldn't play?
I think the answer is "Everyone who isn't playing now!"
Seriously though;
I just pay to play. I've got a better use for my ISK, like burn them to keep warm, give them away etc.
The point of EVE in payment is, as i see it;
"If you got time, you can use it to pay. If you need to work, you can use it to pay."

I tend to kill people and take their stuff (in game). I like it that I can do what I like to do and support my Eve habit at the same time. -murder one

Money is easier to come by than isk for me. When I make the choice each month, 700 million isk or $17, it's a no brainer. Earning 700 million isk will take longer than the 35? minutes it takes me to earn $17.

Right now I'm enjoying eve and would probably pay for an account with RL cash.
However, I wouldn't be here now if I hadn't been able to pay for my account with isk for the last few years.
I'm also starting a second account this evening which I certainly would not do if I was paying RL cash for it.

It's about 315-325 mil depending on where you buy 'em. Not that it's any better, but just thought I'd let you know.

Free?
I do not understand your logic.
You work X hours out of game and get money to pay for eve, or you work X number of hours in the game and get your subscription paid.
Either way it is not free.

I've played for just over two years now for 'free' Eve has been my hobby during a period of either working part time or being unemployed, which has meant that I have had plenty of time to make isk and little spare rl cash. If that situation swapped around I would probably start paying for the game with real money.
It just makes sense if you have a lot of time to spend ingame to utilise part of it saving you some cash. If you don't have that time time to spare, then spend real money.
And by the way, a full tank of gas probably costs more (due to larger tanks rather than more expensive gas) and lasts a shorter time in the US than pretty much anywhere else in the world, so that is a pretty weird yardstick you've chosen.

Some of the best things in eve is being able to keep that windfall you earned and being impulsive.
Having to spend around half a month each month keeping a schedule each day to spend a couple of hours making sure you hit a target to get up to 400 mill that month soon kills the enjoyment.
Then you find you want like another 400 mill a month to spend on your ships that's now going into your subscription payment. So your gameplay takes a huge nock.
Every big reward you come across ends up getting used as put towards that months GTC so you don't have have to grind as many tedious missions.
It get's impossibly boring very fast though where you can barely force yourself to do it.
Playing for free is for the rich kids with the Dyprosium moons, Chribba, etc...

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 29/07/2009 11:35:41 I've never accumulated enough ISK in a single month to pay for a GTC, so it's not even an option. I suspect most solo accounts are in the same situation unless you're one of those all missions all the time players, or are more into the market side of the game than the space side. I'd rather just pay the hundred dollars or whatever for a twelve month subscription than commit gametime to paying for the game.

Yeah but you can't put a price on something the game gives you effortlessly, I would imagine datacores have been going down in price ever so slightly since day one.
If everyone had 100 RND they'd certainly be near worthless.

Somewhere around 25% of the EVE pilot population pays with PLEX/GTC purchased from other players. It stands to reason that a noticeable portion would quit (pilot-wise, I mean, not user-wise) if that ability was removed. So... anywhere from 10% to 20% of the EVE population would cease being paid for if PLEX/GTC purchases with ISK would become "not allowed". I have a feeling that's too much a hit to CCP's bottom-line, so don't expect it to go away any time soon (and I wouldn't really like the proliferation of RMT after PLEX/GTC purchases are removed either).

Secure selling of GTC's has only been around for about a year, but you were always allowed to sell GTC's for isk at least since I started playing the game in RMR. only before it was like pilot trading, based on trust and required a GM to fix it if someone cheated you out of your isk.
Oh, and a mixture of ratting and invention pays for my accounts and still leaves me want I need to play around with.
and yes, I would pay to play if I had to, but prob wouldn't have as many accounts Support the DEAD HORSE POS's |

Edited by: Sidus Isaacs on 29/07/2009 12:16:34 I have never used a GTC. And I neer will.
Tbh, you could mow your neigbours lawn to get the cahs for one months game time, and it would be quicker then douing enldess mission of PvE.
I rather use the isk I make in gamefor ships :)
So, I rather take the 15$ out of my monthly paycheck and pay for a good game (and lets fac it, I use more cash on beer and snakcs then I do EVE, its not that hard to cut back on thoose things if you really are short for cash :P)
Aslo, free games have a tendancy to die :P
Edit: I live in Norway, so the $ currency is currenlty lauhghably low :D (even cheaper EVE for me! :D) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have 2 accounts, play them both with GTCs. Getting the isk is not "work", it's fun as I trade, run missions, explore and mine and get to buy all the ships and gear I like. That is even after paying 600 mil every month for the subscription.
Without this option, I would have to quit EVE and thus I am very grateful for CCP for allowing GTCs and Plexes in the first place.
