Great video, far better than most of the recent expansion trailers.

Why we do not have that level of graphics? This video is misleading. The actual level of graphics on the client with maximum settings is significantly lower. DON'T KILL CURSE! |

At Massively, we got a sneak preview download of the full res version of this a day early and we ran our own video encode of it. Not sure if it's better or worse than the youtube link though.
I was absolutely blown away by this video. For the rest of that day I went around telling everyone I knew who plays EVE to watch out for the awesome new EVE video the that was about to go live. This video definitely captures the essence of EVE much more directly than the usual cinematic trailers. To compare it to player-made EVE videos, it was a lot more reminiscent of "Clarion Call: Triage Special" and the "This is EVE" series than it was of the more cinematic videos like "War Has Come" (though it did fit in some pretty awesome cinematic scenes). It worked really well, the camera work, video editing and after effects were very effectively used.
One thing I did notice was that they snuck in bits of pre-rendered fleet footage of spread out ships flying toward each other in formation, even dreadnoughts flying to a stargate for some reason :p. In previous videos this has always been a big realism-breaker and using it always seemed very dishonest as stuff like that just doesn't happen in the game. Video footage of that kind of stuff lacks major emotional resonance for most EVE players because it lacks verisimilitude. But in this video, they had a few seconds of it and then it was followed by some realistic battles using the same scene background, then a bunch of ACTUAL footage of EVE battles. I think that was perfect, it led pretty smoothly from the cinematic "this is what EVE could be like some day" fleet shots to actual footage.
Definitely the best official video to date :).

The miner would likely continue to mine oblivious to the aggro as he is, in fact, a macro running on someone's 2nd or third account and the 'epic hero victory' you inconceivably won against the pirates would likely have resulted in your instant miserable death and subsequent podding - but let's say it didnt, does the loss of 1 hulk matter to the macro miner overlord? Nah he's got 10bn isk a day coming in from his corps monpoloy on T2 BPO research and his macro mining enterprise. You'd probably just get ignored if you tried to message him anyway, as he doesn't have time to deal with 'n00bs'. Sheesh.
I think you missed the point of the entire video. The whole point was to show that you make your own choices and those choices can directly affect other people within the game. Just look at some of the events that have happened recently (most famous being the BoB disbandment). One person changed EVE's landscape in an instant. That's only possible on EVE.
YOuve both missed the point. Ever see an ad for Disney land that featured the no Booze law - standing around in sweltering heat with screaming kids annoying the **** out of you while horseflies the size of mcNuggets bite your neck and your wife is on perma ****ed mode because you got lost on the way?
No. Its an AD. so its shiney happy people.
You dont want to promote your product with THE TRUTH. I should know, Im a despicable advertising "creative".

Because this is an advertisement, and it uses in game footage that has been passed through several filters I imagine.

Awesome vid guys. It's a great image of what eve should be... and even what it can sometimes be right here, right now.
Sadly, there's some practical elements that get in the way of this type of rapid befriendment... for example, you've just made a new friend and are flying with them. Great! Unfortunately there's complications for dealing with standings with that corp/alliance/meta alliance and it's just not possible to deal with the resulting standings issues on the fly like this. Being in fleet works fine, but if you're a neut in fleet flying through their space, you're going to be shot. Same is likely true if there's multiple fleets. Being in fleet doesn't fix the POS standings issues, so this type of story often ends with being shot by the friendly pos at which the larger gang is grouping up before the battle.

That was lovely - well done!
And, for those of you all negative about the situation's 'reality' that's very much how I wound up with the folks I now fly with.
In my case I offered help to someone who was having trouble with a mission. Despite my little T1 Frig it was enough to turn the tide for her destroyer when she couldn't do it on her own.
I joined her corp later that day, met the folks who are now some of the directors of my corp and the rest, as they say, is history.
Yep. Can and does happen.

Edited by: Saint VII on 31/07/2009 04:44:36 I have a question for CCP.
It seems there are only 195 countries in the world: http://geography.about.com/cs/countries/a/numbercountries.htm
I was wondering how you managed to acquire customers from 230 countries? I am a bit disappointed if you just made up a number. Can you please clarify? Thank you.

I do like that you've shifted focus from the dev-influenced, and thus largely externally experienced, main story line to the sandbox, player-driven story lines of Eve. I would have preferred that you had kept a bit closer to the actual "Butterfly effect" that you cite rather that the popular culture version of a simple chain of causal events but for all of that, it's still a great stylistic piece and deserves a place alongside the more regularly released PF story line trailers.

Originally by: Axel grease Edited by: Axel grease on 29/07/2009 17:10:23 Apologizes but this is a far cry from the new player experience, I love eve and the sandbox experience, but any new player who stuck out the trial can tell you this just inst a acruate representation within the first months of the game.
any decent corp will require 6million sp, and you will need at least 6million sp to do anything decent in eve pretty much, and it takes (with the exception of the double xp) one month under the best learning standards to pickup 1million sp, so your looking at anything from 7-9 months of doing nothing but skill training (what else are you going to do missions for 9 months? that gets old fast for a sandbox) and subbing for nothing but the skill training.
in closing I suggest you work on the game not your videos.
I can't believe i'm actually saying this, but....
L2P
If you can't do anything with less than 6m SP you really, really suck at this game. People run level 4's with 2m, and you can tackle reasonably effective in any fleet with 500k. High sec pve is done from day 1.

Originally by: Nyphur I stopped using About.com as a resource years ago, they just rip their content off various other webpages without fact-checking, proper citation or even stating the date on which they copied it. For example, that link you provided was (as far as I can tell) taken partly from a WikiAnswers article which states 195 and uses the United States State department as a reference. But that article is outdated and uses 2008's numbers. The United States State department website currently lists 201 and Wikipedia's arguably more up to date estimate for the number of independant soverign entities is now at 203. So I'd be wary of using about.com as a factual resource.
Countries are also not always geographically defined by political border or soverign state membership. For example, officially England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland may not be separate countries because they're governed as one entity under the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. But the idea that England, Scotland or Wales are individual countries is a well-understood, globally accepted concept that is rarely under dispute. Ask anyone that lives in the UK if England is a country and see what they say.
So I'd say there's actually a lot of contention over the number of countries in the world. I'm not sure where the 230 figure comes from but it seems to be repeated by a lot of companies. Perhaps it's the number of all officially recognised countries and world regions. And I can't believe I just wasted half an hour looking up resources just so I could say that amounts to "What do you mean England isn't a country?!".
You'll note, tho, that 203 is still less than 230. And, even if it were 203, that would be CCP claiming that they have at least one customer from each and every sovereign entity in the world. Could we have all the EVE subscribers from North Korea raise their hands? I'm not even sure this product would be legal there. Or maybe we could ask how CCP's distribution chain is doing in Uzbekistan?
You've made a rhetorical argument about the veracity of various sources, but regardless of which source that is used, it becomes clear that CCP does not have customers in 230 countries. Which makes the advertisement a flat lie. Which is disappointing.

If you'd continued to read past the first paragraph, you'd see I also called the definition of what constitutes a "Country" into question using the solid example of the individual countries which make up the United Kingdom. There are lots of areas that can be considered countries or country-like regions and it's not unreasonable to refer to them as such.
The reason for using the "over 230 countries" line is probably just that it's a slightly more impressive way of saying that EVE is available worldwide. And as I mentioned, the 230 figure seems to be prevalent in advertising and the media. Though I'll give you that the video made it sound like there already ARE eve players in over 230 countries rather than that there COULD BE since it's available worldwide. But it's not like the guys making the video sat down and said "I know, let's lie about how many countries there are in the world! We'll say there are 27 more than are technically recognised by the world's major powers!!"!"2343".
But you didn't honestly sit down and watch that video and think it was amazing right up until they said "230 countries", then go into a blind rage because it's technically incorrect. Did you?
