If you right click the ore icon in the mission details, it will give you a hint as to which regular ore the mission ore is based on, and therefore which crystals to use.

The only mining missions I've done have been none standard ores - so just basic strip miners are best. Did also get a gas mining mission once which took forever and I've avoided them since!

Every mission ore that I've had to collect has been the equivalent to a standard ore for crystal use.
Many times the mission description also tells you "this stuff may look like <whatever> but it's worthless/dangerous/etc. so we don't mine it."

confirming that the normal crystals DO work for the false ores of the same variety...

Could never understand why mining missions are designed with such disincentives.
Even level 4's, no bonus ore, never any other 'roids to mine, which make standard Level 1's and 2's much more potentially lucrative.
Then the ice and gas harvesting missions, which require huge investments of skills/equipment to complete. I guess to a career miner these are considered an investment, but are way out of balance for the paltry rewards you get.
Maybe it's a subtle hint to miners and the bleakness they will face, but mining mission are the most pathetic in the game imo.

When grinding standing, I hope and pray for any ore / gas mission. Beats courier missions any day.
I just finished grinding Lai Dai past 6.85, and boy did that bite. Carthum Conglomerate at least had a good amount of Administration agents for combat missions. Happiest day grinding Lai Dai is when I got nothing but harvesting missions.

r&d agents such a waste of time. in the same amount of time it took you to grind lai dai to 6.8 you could have made the same amount or more running combat than you will get off decyrptors in a year.

On the other hand, I ground standings for Gallente R&D corps four years ago. That's four years of passive income, which was a nice welcome back when I returned to the game after a longish hiatus. I guess it depends how long you think you'll be around.

Yep, I can confirm that R&D agents are a waste of time, especially that passive ~130 mil a month income (about ~1.5 bil a year) that they can generate , this is in addition to the income from the Level 4 combat missions.
Also I suggest you go look at the difference between Decryptors and Datacores.

Seriously, I don't get the hating on R&D agents. I mean, for an industrial character, it seems like an obvious sideline while I hide in station trying not to get ganked during a wardec. I mean, passive income doesn't SOUND bad to me.
