I've been having trouble sleeping at any time but early morning (think 7-8 am) for the past two weeks. I go to bed at midnight to one o'clock and lie in my bed with my eyes closed for hours and hours unable to go to sleep.
My mind just wanders from one random thought to another and my usual trick of picturing a black wall and focusing on it to make me sleep doesn't work. Also reading a book to tire my eyes has no effect; I just finished reading for 3 hours to no effect and now it's 9 am.
So today's the first day I actually won't be sleeping at all, not just from 7 to 2 in the afternoon, but not at all. With work, fitness, social etc. it's unhealthy and disorderly to keep going like this. I know I can make one phone call and get a bottle of those powerful prescription sleeping pills, but I'd rather not do that, not risk dependency and use it as a last resort.
Anyone got any advice for a nightclub working insomniac? I've tried over-the-counter sleeping aids and I don't feel them at all, in fact on occasion they've made my heart beat too fast to even try sleeping. What are some methods I can try to get back to a regular sleeping schedule? -

Do you sleep in? Use an alarm clock to wake you after 7 hours and you wont have a problem getting to sleep the next night.

I would normally wake up at 9-10am everyday and go about my daily schedule. I usually go to sleep between midnight to 1 o'clock. I don't need this much sleep, but I exercise throughout the day.
However, on thurs and sunday I don't sleep until 7 am in the morning after coming back from work and I didn't have problems falling asleep then and getting back to my regular schedule the next day until two weeks prior to today.
Right now I'm running on empty, so if I can't sleep tonight at midnight, then I'll have insomnia and I know it won't be a problem of trying to sleep when full on energy. -

This may get a few laughs out of a few of the more cynical people, but have you ever tried yoga? I have to admit I was cyncial of it at first, but I found it to be deeply relaxing.
Try not to focus on the insomnia, as the more you worry about it, the worse it will get. Try to keep your mind distracted at that time of night. Reading's a good way to occupy it, as it stimulates the brain in a way that television doesn't.

I've tried a range of things personally from pills to changing my diet. Only thing that has really had any effect for me is listening to calming music. (I have a cd with some of the eve jukebox music + an mp3 player that i can listen to whilst lying down.) _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

This is counter-intuitive I know, but it works, dont close your eyes and try to go to sleep, keep your eyes open and try to stay awake.

At least you don't get freaky ass dreams like I do. I had a guy cut into my shoulder and I felt this stingy hanging sensation and all I could picture is the flesh hanging off my arm.
Not to mention if I can't go to sleep and I close my eyes to picture a black wall, I picture the lovely exorcist and other horror images. (Think the Aliens mouth that had another math, that had another mouth, that had another mouth, so on and so on and you just got sucked in)
And yes, I usually sleep at weird times but that's because it is summer for me, so I end up sleeping at either 7am to 5pm and staying up all night, or doing that then the next day I stay up to 2 pm and sleep to 1am and stay up from there. ________________________________________________

I get the same problem as you, but I always wake up at 12 in the day so i've wasted the morning and its getting harder to get into a routine.
I always set up a desk fan or something similar next to my bed. It has a continous, low but not noisey whine that produces some monotony and the cool breeze on my face helps me calm down.
try it .

this is pretty much what I do. I hate going to bed when I'm not tired since I know i'll just lie there for hours, awake.
ATM it's even worse since the nights are really hot and dead silent, so any noises that are made (particually people snoring) are almost deafening and keep me awake
it's got to the point where I have to have some music playing if i want any chance of a good nights sleep

There are likely as many suggestions for combatting insomnia as there are people to provide them. Whenever I've suffered from same, I've tried various tricks with varying results. Of all the things to try, here are a handful that can help (in no particular order):
- Obvious one, go to GP. They can prescribe medication with more 'active ingredient' than any over the counter stuff. Don't OD on over-the-counter stuff. - Get up and repeat your night-time routine and try to go back to bed, whatever it is. Bathroom, brush teeth, brush/comb hair, get dressed, hot drink, etc. - A small glass of wine - While trying to sleep, take long deep breaths and count them (fun part is trying to remember what number you got to the next morning! ) - Use a decongestant-type thing you put on your clothes/pillowcase/duvet like karvol or vicks and concentrate on the smell of it. - Put on some quiet music of your liking (avoiding high energy dance/metal/techno/etc) and concentrate on it. No/Less lyrics is better.
If your mind is still in overdrive, it'll be very hard to sleep. Might be worth giving up and doing something mind-numbing...late night TV, boring book. Anything monotonous and repetitive will help...the ticking of your clock's second hand, distant traffic sounds outside the window...just force yourself to concentrate on something as described to try and shut your concious mind up with al it's thoughts, ideas, worries and so on. Sleeplessness usually comes and goes, hopefully you'll be alright again soon. -------------

Edited by: Taradis on 06/08/2009 05:49:11 I get the same thing almost on a regular basis just take this past weekend for example.
Woke up at 2230 Thursday to be at work by 2330 get off of work at 0800 Friday.
Stay awake from 0800 Friday until 0230 Saturday morning then I finally fall asleep.
Sleep until 1030ish Saturday morning then stay awake all day Saturday and didn't go to sleep until Sunday afteroon at 1230 and I use sleeping pills during the week, sometimes I take 3 of them.
One time I actually fell asleep mining so I am guessing you should try mining, just remember to dock up, I literally fell asleep to the humming sound of my strip miners and when i woke up i was in a pod

Actually from a medical point of view that is one of the best (natural) solutions. It's also useful, for us men at least, if you go to bed in pain. The sudden release of endorphins and other chemicals is why we tend to annoy women greatly by dropping off to sleep. See girls, it's the chemicals and hormones to blame we're not the selfish bunch who nod off as soon as we had what we wanted you think we are.
But jesting aside. Try it before you start trying 'chemicals' from your doctor

My tricks for sleeping:
1. Don't resist your trains of though - in fact, push them to continue along one track. Start thinking of a scene (for some reason I tend to picture a big-rig driving along a vast desert road) and just let your mind do whatever it wants with it. Eventually you will pass from conscious thought into a dream, and the rest of your brain will get some rest.
2. Work out. Take a long run. Do as many push-ups, sit-ups and back-ups as you can muster before going to bed. Essentially just exhaust yourself. All of this releases lots and lots of endorphins into your system, and there's nothing like a bit of natural drugs to mellow you out.
3. Change your environs. Make sure you visit a new place every day and really experience it, play a new game, make a new acquaintance, redecorate your home/room. All of this gives your brain a lot of new experiences to sort through, which will make it easier to fall asleep. -----

I have a similar problem and found doing the following helps most of the time:
1. cut out mentally stimulating (I mean stuff that forces the mind to be sharp) activties atleast 2 hours before going to bed such as video games, action genre movies.
2. Read a book while in bed. Even if your the type not to read or just have say the (insert holy book here) on hand reading several pages 1/2 hour before going to bed can help. As with number 1, avoid books that have alot of action in them (ie avoid the Halo novels, try reading Mobey ****.)
3. If you have a significant other you know what to do.
4. Try mentally reviewing your day before going to bed. If you've had an active day your mind may be trying to make sence of everything you did. Writing in a journal (I recomend old school writing over a computer as the physical activity of actual writing will help to fatigue you) can help in this.
5. If all else fails combine 1 cup hot milk with 1/2 cup cold milk and mix. Ive found that it has to be a hot cold mix for me to work properly as ussually ill start to feel the effects within 20 minutes. I ussually combine this with reading a book.
Other possibilities might be that your body isnt comfortable with the mattress your sleeping on. Have you tried flipping it recently? If not do so (the first few nights after this though can be hell as your body readjusts to the sudden firmness). If that doesnt work try sleeping on another mattress all togeather or even the couch for a few days. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

Read textbooks of a field you're not at all interested in, the sheer boredom should put you out eventually.
Remember, closed mind, don't associate or otherwise apply the matter at hand to what you know as to make it interesting, just cram it.
