I hate the man, but I find his logic very sound.
Paying for quality (and reliable) news makes sense, and will probably become the norm on the net eventually - your parents paid for newspapers after all.
However, quality (and reliable) are rarely associated with Rupert Murdoch.

How can charging for something that you can get free, both easily and legally, possibly be a good idea?

I always stuck with BBC news. It may have it's flaws, but it isn't the comedy propaganda instrument that Sky News is (the British equivalent to Fox News, both owned by Newscorp).
What always made me laugh was the banner headlines. "Body found at property in Bodmin" on BBC news becomes "Death House" in big capital letters on Sky News. Quality journalism? My arse.
I do hope that Rupert Murdoch gets to see his empire crumble around him. Journalism suffered greatly at his hand over the years. He introduced **** to newspapers (not that I have anything against them, but that's what ****ography is for), and hyped up the public hysteria factor of any given issue, and made newspapers dumb without giving them the benefit of simplicity (when it should have been the other way around).

Welp, he's basically always been peddling entertainment and not news so I guess it's the logical step.

To think I was about to come and find you for that comment.
Besides, what is the big deal, most of us already pay for our fake news (Daily Show) since Comedy Central is a cable channel. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

I'm studying to be a journalist. The entire profession was in danger because of news outlets handing out the news for free online - lower newspaper/magazine subscriptions, less ad revenue, etc etc. This move will probably save the entire field.

The BBC isn't perfect, but compared to the competition it's still my first stop for News.
There was talk of levying a 50p/month charge on all internet connections in the UK to boost the TV license fee for the BBC, which I think is reasonable considering the benefit the UK gets from the state-subsidised BBC.
I also get news from blogs and independent news websites too, and places like Open Democracy are great for in-depth articles. --------

Yeah, I was impressed with John Stewart when he grilled that Cramer financial reporter. Reminded me of the time when reporters actually asked hard questions, not the moronic drivel that Fox, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS put out as "news".
And now.. someone actually wants to charge for that crap?

He should get away from fox and start his own new network. Granted sometimes hes off in fantasy land with his views but damnit when he is on target he is unstoppable.

You assume I care that YOUR field is in jeopardy.
My field is however boosted by news being free as well as information. The weaker your industry is the more beneficial it is to me, and you can trust me when I say I'll do my best to keep it that way, and there's little you will do to stop me.
my advice for you is to switch fields. |

Journalism should be a calling not a 9to5 job you pad your resume to get and write vauge sellable stories for that have little to do with reality. Imo there are too many 'journalists' out there just like we have too many 'lawyers'.

I like to think him, Keith Olbermann, and Lou Dobbs are clones of the same man. They have a whole Naked Snake/Solid Snake/Liquid Snake/Solidus Snake thing going on. I'm trying to derail the thread.

True or not, I don't care. All I see on redtops when I pick up my lunch is something that I couldn't care less about.
(note that "couldn't means 'could not'; whereby 'could care less' implies I already care. Also lose<>loose.)

Robert Maxwell he stole pension money and died in an "accident".
or
Elliot Carver a media mogul in the Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies. He was killed by a sea drill thing on a stealth ship in the south china sea. MI6 then announce his death as a freak "accident".
Coincidence?

There is no such thing as 'quality news' for us to pay for. It's all expensive looking TV sets with reporters who put a certain spin and sensualisation on their reports to get viewer ratings. I'd love to collapse the entire fandango by 'pirating' news; with mobile phone cameras in every pocket and websites like YouTube - everyone is a camera man and news can be digested from the pure imagery without a suited middleman to tell us that what we just saw should make us scared of muslims or want to murder immigrants. -omg-

Ah yes, the BBC, seems to be pretty anti-government to me, and the government is intent on destroying the license fee altogether! Good plan BBC!

Isn't the BBC owned by the UK government? I remember a Monty Python episode where because they are shown on the BBC, they are told that the Queen will be watching their show that night, and when she starts watching it they have to sing the national anthem or w/e.
If I remember correctly it interrupted a funeral sketch that was talking about the benefits of cannibalism. I'm trying to derail the thread.

The way things are going now, the web's gonna run out of money. People are already having difficulty figuring out where all the money's coming from to fund all these sites and turn a profit.
So while I love free stuff as much as the next guy, it's only a matter of time before more and more sites have to choose between charging or shutting down.
