I've lived solo in WH space with 3 alts for quite sometime. Once you're all set up, you're pretty much free to do as you want. Some main points to consider though are:
Find a wormhole system that only connects to other wormhole systems via a static wormhole. This means you will always have sites to farm, as "long term residency" will mean a lot of sitting around doing nothing. Sites will despawn within your first week, and you will find nothing to do waiting for another to spawn. This point is the most important, and do consider it. Try to identify the "out going" wormholes quickly in a system. These are WHs which have the type (eg U210) on your systems side. If it goes to other class 2s, then see if the same WH type respawns when it collapses. If it does, then its static.
The biggest mistake I made in WH exploration was staying in a class 3 for a week+ waiting for grav sites to spawn while attempting the anoms. Waste of time, POS fuel, and cost me a lot of corp members leaving the exploration team out of boredom. If you don't find a static wormhole and just want to get into WH space, then go in, stay for a week farming the sites. As soon as they're gone and theres nothing to do... leave and find another.
POS is dependant on your needs. If you do not plan on doing polymer reactions or manufacturing, then I would say a small is fine. Corporate Hanger and Ship maint bay obviously the only things you definitely need. Some defences as well.
As you intend on doing everything solo, then class 2 is your best option. Class 3s are possible, but work your way up to those once you're comfortable in WH space. I refer mainly to the anomalies though. If you mainly want to mine, then you may find more interesting grav sites in a class 3, but for an all round experience then start with class 2.
As for ship types... again... kinda dependant on the class you go into. Class 2s can be done in a HAC, Drake, and other higher end ships. Tech 2 cruisers and battlecruisers basically win. I wouldn't suggest the use of an alt to tank. Sleepers switch targets dependent on threat, and if your alt isn't dealing out as much dps as you are, then its possible you'll remain primary for most of the encounter. You could perhaps get a bit more agro on your alt if you do some ECM with him, as they consider that as a high threat.
If you're planning on using an orca.. know your mass limits. You do not want the situation of collapsing a WH on your way in or out without everything through.
Choose to enter a WH system via a back end hard to reach system. No traffic highways. This will heighten your chances of no one hitting you while your POS is going up, or collapsing the hole mid haul of supplies.
For ore refining, consider hauling to a station regularly as exit wormholes show up. Refine it to minerals, then stockpile at POS. When you get a good WH to a market hub, haul it all out there and sell for profit. Stockpiling ore puts a lot of strain on you when you need to haul it all out, and a WH's mass is the main limit.
Hope this was of some help =) You should definitely consider getting help on this though... more of a fun experience working with friends.
