Just on your first sentence ..... "everything else in the videogame industry"...... ... Nope .... You should try APB (All Points Bulletin, a free game).
The character creation there is 10 times better then the one in EVE, not to mention the adaptation of cloths and such. But then again, that is a MMO roleplaying first person shooter.
For a game featuring spaceships, EVE is darn good for your avatar, I'd agree. But it could do with more features, options, positioning, etcetera, IMHO. Neque femina amissa pudicitia alia abnuerit.

The character modelling is nice and it conforms well to the modifications you can do to it.
However, the character creator itself is a bit limited imo, even (especially?) compared what's out there at the moment. Granted, there's usually a balance between the two that needs to be reached GÇö the lower-fidelity the model, the more you can adjust it and not make it look bad because its threshold of silliness goes down as the fidelity decreases.
For instance, the EVE character creator does not really let us adjust bone structure outside of the face (and even there, it's fairly limited), and the limits for the tissue sculpting are rather small. This is because it''s helladifficult to get all the accessories and animations to work properly when you go into those kinds of things, and that's why we don't have people of different heigh andGǪ ehmGǪ girth.
Also, there are no real posing and very limited expression modelling GÇö if I were to guess because it's rather difficult to make it user-friendly if you make it entirely free-form, and because any kind of preset selection will feel constrained simply by the very nature of it being a preset selection. Likewise, the selection of stuff we can actually put onto those models is very limited, but that once again goes back to the whole fidelity-vs-variety problem.
The one thing that does impress me is how they've managed to hide the classic sliders behind a much more intuitive and GÇ£hands-onGÇ¥ modelling method. On the other hand, it also hides some options that aren't immediately obvious because instead of having a separately labelled slider, it's a matter of manipulating the same modelling area from a different angle GÇö it still makes sense, but you might not notice it the first time around. GÇ£If you're not willing to fight for what you have in GëívGëí you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.GÇ¥

I find it extremely annoying and frustrating. is this still an issue? I changed it recently (probably Crucible 1.5) so the character stops moving as soon as you start sculpting him/her.
Yes it's still rather bothersome & difficult to work with. A simple on / off button that would completely stop or restart the movement strictly when desired would be wonderful. |

Stuff was supposed to be offered for some time, and then taken out of the NeX, and then probably added later. .
That sort of thinking is why it failed. CCP is stuck on stupid (or was) when it comes to the money store.
Let's compare.
* Amount of money I've spent on NEX in the year it's been open: Zero
* Amount of money I've spent in the last two days buying clothes in Secret World cash shop: $50
People were buying so much from the SW shop that they had to temporarily shut it down to process all the deliveries. Funcom made a buttload of money because they did it right.
Cheap. Fun. Accessible. Impulse buying. IT'S NOT HARD TO FIGURE OUT! I've been screaming at CCP from day one about this and it's been terribly maddening. |

Would prefer sliders, tbh. The hands on sculpting in some situations is too sensitive and the angles at which the sculpting can be made are not exactly clear so it's easy to go from "not just right" to completely fubar whereas getting a sculpt "just right" can be illusive. We want breast augmentations and sluttier clothing in the NeX! |

On that topic, one thing that would really be nice is the ability to save your progress to XML so you can really get into the experimentation and be sure to have solid and known save states along the way (not to mention some really geeky notepad copy-pasting between different experimentation sessions, each focusing on a single feature).
GǪbut other than that, maybe just the ability to say GÇ£ok, screw this GÇö just pop up the box with the sliders so I can fine-tune thisGÇ¥. GÇ£If you're not willing to fight for what you have in GëívGëí you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.GÇ¥

- Are you planning/discussing to bring back some of the GÇ£classicGÇ¥ items? I know that there are a lot of request from every bloodline, I especially liked my GÇ£samurai costumeGÇ¥: http://oldportraits.eveonline.com/Character/1352058648_256.jpg
- Are there plans for more liberal clothing?
- Will there be school uniforms?
- Are you designing new items? Or has this process been halted?
- Why were only a few of the already exitsing items added?
Thank you! Looking forward to the new dev blog! No, I don't think there are any plans to bring back those items. The military line that has been made was only supposed to be the first line of themed clothing (I believe cyber punk was another theme), but that has pretty much been put on hold for now. I doubt there will be any school uniforms. We are not really designing new items, but we do have an awesome catsuit that was made last year and our character artists have been playing with making some new spacesuits (all female suits), and we are hoping we can add them sometime soon. They were on Sisi for a short time the other day, and people seemed to like them a lot We wanted to see what happened with the NeX store when we lowered the prices, and see if people were actually interested in the clothes, and it's better to start it off with only a few items. Originally the NeX store was never really supposed to have everything available at all times. Stuff was supposed to be offered for some time, and then taken out of the NeX, and then probably added later. I don't really know how we will handle the NeX and the offers in the future. I'm glad you guys seem to want those clothes , so I hope we can add some more soonish (although I don't make any decision on that). Thank you for your reply!

Well... since it's already been necro'd, I might as well chime in. This avatar creator really is amazing, especially since it's just an extra little side feature. It's provided me hours of amusement while I wait for my skill to level up. So many subtle nuances of a character just waiting to be unlocked by a well timed click/photo. |

While for the most part I agree with you here, I think APB has a much wider selection of hair styles and clothing options. You can customize your own tattoos, hair length and so many other features. You can make fat people, skinny people and as always you can make ridiculously big breasted women.
The main gripes I have with the EVE character creator is just the selection of clothing and hair styles; even if you bought every item from the AUR store, you'd still only have a handful of real choices. They've given you an illusion of choice here really; there are many clothing models which are essentially the same with a slight change in colour.
I do however love the character creation; you can make a very personal character in next to no time. I only wish I had a wider selection of hair styles! |

One thing I feel the new character creators miss is the racial distinctiveness of the old method. With the old portraits, you could look at a character and instantly tell which of the 4 factions they belonged to, and often which bloodline too. Now our characters have all pretty much merged into the middle and there's very little in the way of obvious visual cues to distinguish one race from another. It would be good to get some of that feel back. Titans were never meant to be "cost effective", its a huge ****.-á- CCP Oveur, 2006

I notice that the default in the forums is still the 512 versions, but thanks to your informative post it is easy to bring up the 1024 version especially during DT. If you compare the two images in full screen mode the differences become very apparent. The 512 images look very blurry when blown up to fill a 60" television!
How hard would it be to have the 3D model viewer installed into EVE gate? It would be nice to also see these full body avatars accessible without having to type the characters name in the in game search. It would make things convenient and also put the NEX items to a little more use, |
