I'm probably going to end up homeless in a month because of circumstances I don't want to go into detail about.
However, I would like tips for people who have experienced this ****. Any tips for survival?
Luckily I don't live in a city or anywhere near the ghetto so I think I won't have to worry about being attacked and stuff. I'm trying to derail the thread.

Possible solutions (in no particular order) : * move in with your home-owning life partner (get one of those if you don't have one) * keep visiting different friends... for extended periods of time * offer your services as house-sitter in the newspaper or wherever * move back in with your parents * go get a job which requires you to live in job-arranged housing * join the army

Honestly I could give you better tips if I knew the circumstances.
I have been homeless once before and it looks like I will be in 4 months or so (until I can't rent the apartment anymore)
I plan to live in the lab where I'm doing research at (my professor said it was OK). I have a cot, a fridge, and a microwave, and I'm gonna have my mail delivered to a friend.
Tips for food though. One, learn to drink water. It's free everywhere. Two, purchase cheap food whenever you can, and dont buy anything that will spoil in a week or so, only food you will eat right now or will last ten years and requires little if any preparation (MRE's for example, cans of tuna).
Learn where the homeless food places are. In my city I know where a few are from volunteering, looks like I'll be eating at them with you :P. But seriously, learn where they are.
My biggest piece of advice: don't be a piece of ****. There is no shame in not having a home or money, hard times fall on many people, it's how we respond that defines us. Keep knocking down doors for jobs, keep going to school, keep doing whatever. Just don't lay down and die, cause if you do, you go from being homeless to being a dirty bum.
The hardest part is the mental game. Surviving is relatively easy in today's society. In fact its very easy. Keeping your sanity and staying sharp isn't. You will want to just give up and even though now you will find you have a lot of free time, you won't use any of it because you won't be motivated. It sounds weird but trust me, it's how it is.
Don't fret, if you find even an entry level job with minimum wage, you'll be very capable of renting a dirt cheap apartment and having enough money for at least food. (Where I live minimum wage is almost 10 dollars an hour, and a cheap apartment is 500 bucks a month. working 160 hours a month, you could swing it.)
Remember, the hardest part will be the mind game. Stay alert, stay alive.

well the circumstances are i'm 19 and as much as I my parents love me, I haven't been able to get a job. I dont have enough money to afford college (they can't either with the economy the way it is). So they are kicking me out.
It's probably for the best. I'm trying to derail the thread.

I live in America. Logic isn't part of our lives. They probably would help me find a place to rent if I had a job (I wouldn't be getting kicked out though, now would I?). Which I don't.
I'll probably chill with friends for a while and then join the army I suppose. I'm trying to derail the thread.

Yeah. Clearly if a guy can't find a job and has no means to support himself that's the right time to kick him out of the house...
I'd go with the friends option, hey it worked for Cobain. GL

Seriously.
Circumstances really depend on where you live also. You will have top check your local state welfare office, and jobs center.

- Commit a low profile crime and march into prison. Get free education.
- Sign up with the army (and get free education).
With an unblemished record (honorable discharge etc) you could get a decent job as security personnel/police officer/FBI/etc.
Also, I don't know how things work in the US, but military service years (just as police/firefighter/etc) usually count twice. That is, 1 year is counted as 2 normal years in work. So a military type can usually retire early in life.
Ofc you could get killed if things come to that. But then again, there's no reward for not taking any risk at all.

Applied to the Army myself a few months ago. It's a lot harder to get in these days than it used to be (at least in the UK) and I doubt it's going to get easier, but the benefits (free or heavily subsidised healthcare, accomodation, food, travel, education, etc ontop of a healthy wage) make it almost stupid to not try, especially in your circumstances (not-so good education, no money, nowhere to stay)
I'm not in yet mind, it's a long process and I've still got selection to do; all I can say is if you're really thinking about it, contact them sooner rather than later

Just walk in to the recruiter. The rest is up to them.
"Hi dude! Thought I'd check on you homies... needa' job, have guts, willing to shoot."
Should they ask your reasons for wanting to join, tell them you want to be a policeman or something similar in the future. Or that you want a life-long career.
Don't tell them that you have no other choice. In fact, tell them you are undecided between the army and some other job.

Well that is rather harsh. but i have been through exactly that. Half my fault and half my mums, i was out of work and to be honest no looking for a job. mum ended up throwing me out in the end. Slept at my ex's then my nans for awhile. then found a room at the YMCA. Worst experience of my life, met some nasty/scary people. So i would avoid that. To be honest i am still recovering from having to rush and sort my life out and a place to live. in debt and other things. If their is no way you cant stay under any condition then make plans now. Dont put it off until its to late. Also stop playing eve for the time being for about a month until your sorted. Seriously!!!!! Join the brown Coats today!!! |

You can get free education, earn some money, you wouldn't have to pay for a living.
Also, you could do almost any kind of degree while in the Army. (Almost, since some degrees would probably require attendance, but we are talking about select ones here really.)

Hmm... that really doesn't make much sense... you parents are kicking you out because they can't afford to send you to college ? So what now, can they no longer afford to let you just live with them or what ? It's not like you couldn't live off of, say, 200$ a month or so if you really had to, they can't be THAT desperate for cash. Or do they just hate your guts so much they can't stand you living in the same house with them ?
So... your parents... they're either the most ruthless, uncaring parents in the world... or they're pretty damn smart, but they don't know you well enough (as in, maybe they just THREATEN to kick you out so you would go out and GET a job already instead of wasting time and money playing an online game, but completely underestimate your willingness to disregard the "hard and honest" path for a quick-fix alternative).
In other words.. ...you're either not saying something which is relevant (that they don't really mean it, or that you could remain in their house under certain conditions but you're just unwilling to do what they ask) ...or you're just jerking our chain here (as in, this story could as well be fabricated, for all we know).

I cannot understand your parents. Putting you out on the street with no way to support yourself is not helping anyone by making one more homeless person. These times call for family pulling together, not apart. There are social agencies that can help, and as one suggested, there is the military. Talk to recruiters for all the branches and make an informed choice. You could launch a new way of life and a career.
