Currently having disaggrement with a friend (I say useless, he says useful).
Also post what makes you a qualified carrier pilot (ie my children are named thantos and chimera)
Edit: also not talking about one or two replacing a smart bomb or something im talking the whole she-bang.

If by DCU you mean Damage Control Unit, and if you want an uber-tank and already have a load of hardeners, then the extra resistances from a DCU are always worthwhile.
If by DCU you mean Drone Control Unit, and if you want your carrier to do as much damage as possible, then DCUs are the way to go.

I was about to say, wearing a Desert Camouflage Uniform onboard a Carrier would just be silly... all that water!?

Must mean you are referring to Drone Control Units. In which case, if you want to have a lot of Fighters out and about, then yes you'd want them. Which is kinda what Carriers are for... for the Fighters.
If you want to fit a lot of Gang support stuff, like boosters and remote reps and such, then that's up to you as well.
As it goes with every other module and ship in EVE, it depends on how you plan to use it. Throwing 5 target painters on an EW frig is useless, but doing the same on a missile boat may be better.

Yes it's very useful. You get your carrier to level 4, then ADI to 1, you undock, launch 10 fighters, wite something like: "Hey ppl, look, I have 10 fighters, I'm PWNZORG!!!111". Then you dock, switch DCU for something usefull, and forget about it.

There are always more important and better modules for the highs on my Thanny. I don't think DCU s are useless but I personally never fit them.

if you're still training Carrier 5, sacrificing a single high-slot to be able to field 10 Fighters isn't a bad move. Otherwise it's probably of limited usefulness.
If you're sitting well outside the battle, just playing relay for a bundle of assigned fighters and want to be able to assign the full 15 you can, then you'll have to go with a full rack of the things, but whether or not that's a desirable fitting is another matter, without remote logistics (what a Carrier is designed to do after al) you're ignoring the Carriers bonuses.
If you meant a Damage Control, a resist bonus without stacking penalty usually isn't a bad thing, providing you have the slots for it.

They're situational.
But most carrier pilots that know what they're doing rarely fit more than 1 if any.
You need smartbombs, neuts and logistics more than you need to boost the pathetic damage of a carrier. A gank battleship can do more than a carrier for a lot less. Their primary purpose is their badass logistics (and I don't mean using a tactical logistics reconfiguration module either).
If you know you're going in primarily for a capital gank with lots of friends, then yes, you might take a few extra fighters, but generally it's all remote reps, smartbombs, and neuts. - Support DISBANDING the Alliance CCP Renamed at the Alliance's Request |

They're about the only defensive option you have against hostile fighters and drones. Plus sometimes you might get a light dictor or ceptor this way that wasn't paying much attention.

yeah I agree :P but I can se one reason to use drone control units, if you sit outside a pos asigning fighters you could use drone control units to have more fighters to asign.. its not like you gona use your highs for anything else then maybe ganglinks there
but for anything else NO!

Even then, no. Think of it. Before being able to do anything else you'd need to refit, requiring 20.000m3 of space just to store the drone control units ><
Whatever the question, DCU's are NEVER the answer.

They make for great comedy KMs
The only two places it seems it would make any sense would be a hair outside of a POS shields and assigning multiple fighters to multiple interceptors, ratters or whatever. You'd be better off w/ gang links though.
Or any of sort of PvE... *** Currently Playing: Trolls from Outer Space Current Equipment: VISAcard chain mail, +2 Amulet of Epic Whine, Self Banstick +2 WTB: +666 E-peen killboard stats |

When sitting solo on the Tama station undock, I would often have 2 fit (as well has 3 heavy neuts, TS scram and domi web, +3 sensor boosters), but I agree that if you're doing anything remotely close to what a carrier is designed for, drone control units have no place on a carrier.

That pretty much goes for 'extreme circumstances' and nothing a regular carrier pilot will do.
I've been flying carrier for some 1,5 year, and so far I never owned, fitted, or even considered having a DCU on. Been doing a bit of everything from small to huge scale work with it. But no, no lowsec station camping. - I'd tell you why but then I'll have to kill you. And to kill you I'd have to log in. And to log in I'd have to stop browsing these forums. Both you and me knows that'll never happen. |
