I'm playing with the thought of creating an insurance company in EVE, but there has to be a reliable way to know if the client has really lost the ship, and preferably how it was lost. The only thing I can think of is by loss-mails. Kill mails are easy enough to get a hold of, but I haven't found anything about loss-mails.
Is there some other way to get the information necessary to run such a service?
I want to be able to see if the ship was self destructed, concorded, lost to a war target or lost the "right" (covered by insurance) way

Loss mails are included in the killlog API ( /char/KillLog.xml.aspx ). If the victim-character-id is the same as the character-id of the kill-log, it's a loss.. If the id's are different, it's a kill.
You need the full API key for this though.

Yeah, somehow I think it will be hard for my clients to always have to convince their killers of giving their full API key to the victims insurance company
"Excuse me mr pirate, sir? Could you please send your full API key to this address so our insurance companies can work this out?"
EDIT: Ah wait. You mean I can actually get the losses in the kill mails of the clients?

You need the full api key of the client, not the killer

Yes, kills AND losses are in your killlog api sheet. Just like in your charsheet ingame :D

Thanks for the answers
Follow up question: I have never used the EVE api:s at all. Does there exist a C++ api wrapper? Or is that just wishful thinking?

Would point at the top sticky here but everyone knows all sticky threads only contain worthless stuff you should never read as it might make you look like a noob -- Finds camping stations from the inside much easier. Designer of Yapeal for Eve API.
