So, outfitted a Maller for a second go at a Level 2 mission. Got cap neut by two rats and was DOA basically without any defense. I didn't warp out in time so again I popped. Without good drone skills I can't use my arbitrator to do the missions. So I decided to save my money, keep mining, and wait for my BC to do the L2 missions.
I didn't really expect to be neut'ed on a Level 2, like really?... I know the maller is the best one to use but my Omen popped and I had a Maller laying around (did try reading guides and made some hybrid of them). I guess this is more of a vent that I popped and frustrated that its only a level 2 mission. But seriously, getting cap neut?
Guess I'll just wait for a BC which will be overkill when its full a T2 Harby. |

You may want to post the fitting of the Maller, and your skills.

Kenny,
Defining "Stronger" and "Weaker" should not be compared in the mind set of ship size to one another.
Compare the size of the ship to the mission.
Destroyers are quite excellent cannons that work extremely well in level 1 missions and quite well in level 2s.
While cruisers will function well enough for a level 2 - not all cruisers are ideal for every situation.
The added speed of being in a destroyer + say... an afterburner, or MWD (Micro Warp Drive) if you can pull it off, will keep those neuts so far away you won't even care.
Suggestion:
Get a Destroyer, put an afterburner on it - get some medium range guns (ideal range band should be just outside of a neuts range), and have a blast - you won't even need a genuine tank (though, put something on just for those initial hits while you are beginning to kite. |

Yeah Destroyers are better for L2s, if you fit them with long-range weapons they can out-range Cruisers (optimal) with wayy more tracking because of small weapons + tracking bonus, and they have better speed and thus can kite rats easily.
I'd suggest a Dual Light Beam Laser Coercer, 1mn Aftrburner in the mids and Small repper/Adaptive Nano Plating/heat sink/damage control, you can get some decent dps to 30+km so you can kite the rat that is neuting you, kill it, then come in close and destroy the rest. |

Well, even an excellent fit T1 Frigate with high skill level can also complete level 3 encounter missions within the bonus time. Just because it can do it doesn't mean it's designed for it.
The basic rule for ship class verses mission level :
Level 1 = T1 Frigate, Destroyer Level 2 = T1 Cruiser Level 3 = T1 Battlecruiser Level 4 = T1 Battleship
Basically the T2 ship class would move up 1 level, eg T2 Assault Frigate doing level 2 missions.
That's the basic rule, depending on skill level and modules fitted, a T2 Assault Frigate can even complete level 4 missions within the bonus time.
Being Cap Neutralized in a level 2 mission does sound a bit extreme. From what I remember players wouldn't start encountering EWAR until level 3 missions. However, this is Inferno and I wouldn't be surprised if CCP is tweaking mission NPC's a bit. Think I read something about CCP reworking mission NPC's to start mimicking player ships and or do more EWAR.
Anyway, you can always use Mission Reports for more info. Don't view it as a cheat but more like getting detailed field intel whereas the agent mission briefing is just a simple overview.
Now as for why the Cruiser couldn't handle a level 2 mission, that could be due to any number of reasons ranging from skills to ship fit. |

I never realized that, thanks I will try that fitting Dato suggested - what crystal do you suggest? I'm still learning about which ones to use and I apologize for that!
As far as my fitting, I had medium pulses with Infared/Ultraviolet - heat sink, medium armor rep, 2 x hardeners per mission, adaptive nano plating II in the low slots. In the Med I had Web, AB, some cap related mod. |

with crystals why not carry a set for different distances so that if something does get close you can get a beter optimal on the ship, it take seconds to switch out crystals.

When I was missioning with my Omen/Harbinger I would load Standard in the lazor (-45% Cap for each lazor was main reason), and I would carry a set of Multifrequency for any thing that got close, and a long range lazor for when rats were far out.
I did run a safe boat, survivalbity, cap stable tank (CCC's in rigs) so it did take me longer to clear, but didn't lose my boat.
I was pretty low skilled at the time and couldn't even fit a t2 tank, but I did ok.
Hope this helps and fly safe. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Eden Research Initiative...your rules your way!! |

Also wanted to add - make sure you have EWAR activated to show in the Overview settings. That way you can quickly see and target which ship is doing it. |

Why would any of these medium gunboats be any good in lvl2s filled with mostly frigs? The small, tracking bonused, lots-of-guns out of a dessie does the job far faster. Not to mention there are droneboats. Cruisers can't even pass through gates in some of the lvl2s, such as the lvl2 version of Worlds Collide. There is no L2 WC. L1 WC disallows cruisers though, so that's correctish.... |

In a level 2 mission, you'll want SMALL turrets on your ship, not medium.
L2 are mostly frigates, and once they settle into orbit small turrets will hit them better.
Use drones too if your ship can use them. |

omen is pretty fast and has a small drone bay. very easy ship to kite with. I had a lot of fun in level 2s with one. tbh the npc frigs should never get a chance to settle into orbit.
arbitrator is also very nice for level 2s, loot and salvage as you go, plus it forces you to get drone skills up which will come in handy later. as I had a storyline agent in station I pretty much got my corp standings up stupidly fast and skipped level 3s.
the coercer is also fun in level 2s, just seems a bit fragile at times. |

I ran both in a Navy Slicer. (Though I guess with L3s I had to read the description and be a bit more careful?) Either way I only chose missions that did incoming EM/Therm damage. |
