I'm looking for recommendations for a cheap and effective pvp ship. Something that will not break the bank but is a valued asset to a gang.
Imagine if you were FC...what would you want?
My criteria are:
- Effective small gang pvp - Cost <50mil after insurance (approx)
I fly Amarr, Caldari & Gallente upto BS and HAC, but other suggestions are welcome for the purpose of discussion.
Thanks.

How bout Myrm, cause I've been wondering this too. 0.0 PvP, small gang to solo. I had a setup with a Dual boosted, dual rep active tank with Projectiles and a neut but couldn't see myself T2 fitting it with the market down here. ________________________________________________

this, it really depends on where you fly, how you fly, what your gangmates fly, etc.

Shield buffered Brutix or Harbinger come to mind. Should be well below 50mill a pop with rigs.

Cheapest ship I have is a t1 fitted destroyer used for catching stuff on gates and anti inti work, pricetag shouldn't be more than one or two million. It realy is a great little ship because it is rather good while being cheaper than most peoples pods.

It depends on the strategic situation, enemy target (numbers and ship types), the friendly gang (numbers and ship types available), and your skills and abilities at flying the different ship classes. Typically for small gang I would not suggest using a BS... unless it is a small RR BS gang.
Purely on a numbers basis, that loss amount limits you to t1 ships (t2 fitted) or t2 frigates (rigging depends on type and how price is affected by the upcoming patch).

Cheap gank thorax to add DPS.
Cheap Vexor, ads good dps, decent solo too. Can be fitted with RR for after battle repairs.
Other than what was said, I will agree with destroyers...they make dangerous anti-frig/anti-inty ships, are generally ignored during larger fights, and if you do get targeted, oh well...out <5mil for a well fitted one.

0.0 and/or low-sec. But mostly 0.0.

Not bad per se, but I fear it may be a little too vulnerable and lack enough firepower to make a meaningful contribution. Still useful and worth keeping in mind.

Thanks for the advice. To clarify my skills are either max or near-maxed for BS or HAC ships (although only HAC IV currently). My drone skills are decent but no T2 large yet.
I don't know the type of friendlies available so versatility over specialisation is preferable -although the latter is by no means ruled out.
Because I can fly 3 races reasonably well but have no particular emphasis on any of them I find it hard to know which kind of strategy/ship to focus on.

If you can fly Amarr BS, the Armageddon is excellent and actually quite cheap to replace. Currently the insurance payouts are significantly higher than what the ship costs, so you're only looking at a replacement cost of 20-30 million for the ship plus fittings and new insurance.

If your gang needs...
Tackle -> Interceptor or Interdictor, which one is up to you, both should come in under 50 mil all together Ewar -> Blackbird, it's gives a lot of ewar for a small price, can't really beat it DPS -> Stealth bomber, gives you a lot of dps, at range, while still being small, mobile, and elusive. To top it off you can potentially add a bit of support ewar. Mix -> Arbitrator is a nice mix of dps, neuting, and ewar, all in a cheap package, it's a very nice ship but not often used.
Be sure to stick to fast elusive ships if you're doing small gang warfare in 0.0. Better to be able to engage at range, and be fast enough to disengage if things go south, rather than having a bit more dps and being stuck in a fight.

Harbinger w/Heavy pulse and 800mm plate. No rigs.
Dominix for RR with 3x reps (t2 or arup, solace are about 7m a pop) Remote augmentor rigs instead of trimarks for cost.
Scorp for fleets.

They are a fine example of price not being everything. These things can stop intis in their tracks with their formidable volly damage coupled with very good tracking. Their lock time also makes them perfect for catching stuff on gates and they can get good speeds out of a t1 MWD. A well fitted dessy can even pose a challange to AF and buffer cruisers so it does have the makings of a solo ship.

Let me guess: ship 20 mil, T2 fit 10 mil, trimarks 70 mil I'm the same way..
P.S. It's ridiculous how cheap you can replace T1 BC/BS with insurance as it is. They really should cap it at 50% at the very least imo. ----------------------

I don't even think rigged.
More like 40m hull 10mil mids 8mil lows 15-20mil highs (a full rack of heavy pulse is not cheap!) 5mil drones 3-5mil ammo

Edited by: Darthewok on 15/08/2009 00:45:03 Cheap but effective in small gangs. Have seen them do well time and time again.
Gallente: Brutix (guns>drones of the Myrmidon because of instant damage is better for fast actions) Amarr: Harbinger (nice DPS, relatively fast) Minmatar: Hurricane (fast, relatively OK DPS, versatile fittings) Caldari: Blackbird/Drake
Note for fast small gangs, the BCs may want to have nanofibers and/or inertia stabilizers to keep up with the quick movement of the HACs/Inties.

BC is the best bang for the buck, resonable price, target selection and survivalbility.
If you stick to T2/cheap rigs(DPS, shield resists, lock speed ect.) you will get a deacend fitting done for 50 M after insurance.
Basicly Drake, Harbinger, Brutix are solid choices.

Hopefully medium rigs become a good bit cheaper. Because a buffer brutix with 3 Trimarks has been win for me so far on SiSi (I know, not actual testing ground, bla bla) ________________________________________________
