Considering you then go off an insult players who didn't agree with the idea (or, rather, didn't agree that there even is a problem to solve) you actually got better answers than you deserved.
You want a counter measure? Fit some guns. Problem solved. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

I am an AFK cloaker and I take offense to this thread.
There are may reasons why I go AFK is systems and cloak.
1) I have to take a bio break 2) I smell food 3) There is something to do besides play eve (yeah right) 4) I am bored 5) To make people like the OP freak out and NEVER UNDOCK because my uber DPS cloaked Arazu will totally win
Now to be totally serious its mostly number 2.
to the op, A cloaked ship cannot do anything to you except watch you. If you are smart, long strech I know, keep your eye on local and with the other one that looks off in a different direction watch your overview. Local spike = run.

I never understand these kinds of posts.
If the guy is AFK and loaking then he can't hurt you, he can't provide free intel or anything else because he's AFK.
If he's not AFK and cloaking then he's playing so there's no problem, and if he's not AFK and not cloaked you can kill him.
So in 2 of the 3 possible scenarios he's playing the game and in 2 of the 3 possible scenarios he can't actually hurt you.
Try not being a whiney *****. That might help the situation also. -

regardless of how much the fan-bois say otherwise this is the bottom line:
Originally by: red dwarrf There should be a counter measure!!!
I have never once seen a reasonable answer given as to what the counter to the tactic is.
Originally by: red dwarrf There should be a counter measure!!!
Everything should have a counter in a game of this type.
Originally by: red dwarrf There should be a counter measure!!!
indeed there should.
edit: go search for some nano/falcon threads, i bet all the pro-23/7 cloakers are in there explaining why they shouldnt be changed cruiser & rig BPOs LDS kb |

I dont care about cloakers
but afkers should be kicked of the server after 10 minutes, not only the one in space but also those docked => less people on server => less lag => less lag results in more fun for the others

The counter to a cloaker in 0.0 is to not 100% fit your ratting ship in 0.0 space for PvE. Instead, you have to trade off being as efficient a ratter as possible against having some kind of PvP defence/offence. You also have to watch local / overview and not go afk yourself.
If you want to be able to rat in peace with a 100% PvE fit with 'almost' no chance of being attacked then join an NPC corp and go to Empire. Otherwise, you have to accept that 0.0 can be an unpleasant place and you have to fit accordingly.

1000 people just doing nothing, being afk will consume only very little resources, creating almost no lag.
100 people doing big battle will create A LOT of lag.
So?
KICK PEOPLE DOING PVP BECAUSE IT CREATES LAG!!!

Edited by: Cpt Cosmic on 18/08/2009 08:11:46 actually the server has to create a thread (or a process in other words) for every one that joins eve, although a thread in network programming is mostly a lightweight process (mostly because it depends on what you do with it and noone except ccp knows their code and how they handle their stuff) and I think it would be still better to kick afkers and free the ressources :) it is a matter of efficiency hehe

funny
not afk cloaking is the issue , cloaking itsself is . Now all of you cloaking defenders , explain please why there should be a module granting total invulnerability?
Cloaking as it is now is a great tool for macroers , not against macroers . How many times do you see cloaky ravens around?
And if someone is in 0.0 or a player corp , the carebear status does nolonger apply.
If by carebear you mean someone that seeks to minimize the risks in whatever it is they are doing , then newsflash , everyone and anyone is a carebear , and the "cloak on everything" people are the leading carebears

Oh the arogance is strong within this one!
How about this : Make cloaked ships probable somehow , then the cloaker will allso taste the dark dangerous 0.0 . As it is now , you need to be a total idiot to lose a cloaked t2 cruiser hull (recon , hac) to any sort of rating BS . Your entire argument is irrelevant
The thing is not the raters who want to rat in peace (those just fit cloaks themselves you know.....) , the issue is the people who find it right to be in 0.0 without any risk whatsoever to themselves
So please understand the argument , you`re geting it all wrong : It`s not the locals terified by the cloakers asking for safety (though that`s what you like to think , after all cloak an alt in a system is just psychological warfare) , it`s about the cloakers wanting it 100% risk free

edit : removing local in 0.0 will , as it is now, efectively stop all rating in most of 0.0 , because it would no longer be nearly as profitable as highsec l4 whoring . And yes we all know how many people rat for fun , those would still rat i supose
It wont stop me from ratting, but then, I also aready spam the scanner.

it wont stop me from rating either , except it will cut down my isk -making to a point where i would be better off with a domi alt afk`missioning in empire
Scaner spaming , pvp fited hacs instead of bs`s , all can work fine i supose , the issue remains : in order for0.0 rating to be at least on par isk-wise with l4`s you need dedicated ships , pve fits , and the ability to properly chain a system . Else you end up with a lousy 20m/hour for your trouble .
Personaly , i`d rather hang cloaked in someone`s yard while watching a movie :P

I guess this thread is addressed to me.
I love being 23/7 cloaked in a system.
That's the way I play EVE. I am a voyer. I like that. I payed for a cloaking device because I want to be hidden.
Sometimes I am AFK...
vOv
If you would turn a cloaking device into a non-operational item, I would be very sad.

There are risks associated with even having a cloaking device fitted to your ship: slower locking times, the inability to start locking for some time after you've decloaked, and you're visible in the local channel.
The counters to cloaking are: bubbles, interceptors, smartbombs, or just plain trawling space looking for that cloaked mothership that was aligned with that planet over there.

Edited by: Lord WarATron on 18/08/2009 10:59:31 Its a fun tactic. Couple of folks in combat recons with cov ops cloak (hence no penalties) can lock down a system. Its great fun shutting down systems etc, while you are watching tv or whatever.
If anything, perhaps something needs to happen with 0.0 ratting. Its too risk free for people who use a sound alarmbot. What is needed is that if you want the 0.0 isk, you gotta take the 0.0 risk. Want a spawn? Then commit to it by having all rats scramble.
Then and only then, can you complain about cloakers. I mean, how else we gonna get targets if they can warp out 30sec-1min before you land at their belt? If you cannot get targets, then deny them playing.

Edited by: Lifelongnoob on 18/08/2009 11:09:40 u have a perfectly good countermeasures to cloakers
cos they are paper thin and die easily
they cannot do anything except give intel while they are cloaked
drones & close proximity can decloak them
smartbombs decloak them.
afk cloakers are even more useless as they are not even giving intel if they are afk
so stop crying about cloakers they are fine as they are
