Getting a little dusty around here, maybe it has something to do with CCP's newest game DUST 514?
DUST 514 is CCP's newest game featuring first-person shooter and RTS-style gameplay which interacts directly with EVE Online. You can take a look at the press release here for more information.
Love it? Hate it? Tell us what you think about this new game.

I think it will be interesting to see the effect (if any) on sov. We can pretty much guess that Eve is the bank and mission generator but the degree of the sov changes is what interests people the most.

Ok. I have a (few) questions:
What exactly is Dust514 and why should I care?
I need it explained to me in Space Captain Dummy Talk (tm), please.
I understand, to a point, the whole FPS/Console concept bit. Without disparaging it, I'll just leave it as "Not my thing".
So, why so much freaking out and what is wrong with me, that I am not?

CCP got brass balls. I think this is a great direction to expand the EVE IP and I honestly cannot wait for more information. The video that's out there looks great, can we have it in hi def please? Anyway, great surprise... but please don't forget us PC players want to get out of our ships every now and then too...

WTF?
You announce that a game will interact directly with New Eden, perhaps changing 0.0 mechanics to tie it in, and then you move the discussion thread to out of pod? Yeah, it is another game, but then server issues would also be out of pod experience?
Sorry, that smells a bit like damage control from the forum rage. I don't like this information move, but hey, I am just the sucker paying, aren't I?
I think DUST has can have some merrits but a few more informations regarding sov mechanics would be better than trying to quell discussion.
Fun how the player who were supposed to shape eve are more and more delegated to a spectators role. _________

Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 19/08/2009 19:23:11 I'll repeat here what I said in the big info-gathering thread earlier with some editing:
Glad I'm going to Fanfest this year to hear it first hand, but the uncertainty isn't going to help people calm down.
They're afraid of the changes this may bring to EVE, and reducing those fears a little should pay off in the long run in a big way. You want the players to vocally support you, rather than be scared and outraged.
This is a bold move by CCP and one that could work out very well, but a scared player isn't going to stick around for 6 weeks to get some answers. You may well do a LOT of damage to your reputation by leaving your loyal player base in the dark for such a long time.

Dust 514 screenies look nice. But its a console game. The only reason i brought a PS2 for ú70 (that i sold ) was to play Gran Turismo. Used to playing my FPS's with a mouse and not a joypad.
I wil get a PS3 to play Gran Turismo on it but only when they are like ú130 ish.
Certinly a unique endevour to link an MMO with a FPS.

Edited by: iP0D on 19/08/2009 19:37:15 I think Dust 514 is a solid step for CCP's commercial development and vision. Good thinking, good approach, I am confident the execution will also be fine, CCP has built up extensive experience with challenges and hickups . Plus, CCP's commercial vision is one of step by step, and as that is visible in EVE so will it be visible in Dust.
I'm sad that the release is for Consoles. I do understand why, and I do see the benefits. But even the potential of a PC release later on is something I do not place much hope in. The Premium versus Classic decision made clear what the commercial view is on maintaining redundant development paths
I like that it stays within the same universe, not only does it reinforce the brand, but it provides a very nice additional "pull" for the EVE experience, and that includes mindsets and market niches which are just not available through EVE itself.
I'm looking forward to the integrations, for industry as well as the exploding parts. I'm not looking forward to a slow feature addition path in that regard however, things will probably evolve step by step and feature by feature and in this regard I have little faith in Microsoft for the Xbox potential. They do like to renegociate terms out of the blue for content as well as version updates.
I would like to see the trailer in HD though, and it's a shame that we have to wait until the fanfest for more info's . Also, since this is one universe, I do think this discussion should really be in General Discussion, but ah well.
Edit: forgot something. I do hope we EVE players, you know, the demi gods from the story lines will get ample opportunity to waste soldiers down there by the thousands through orbital bombardments ... "capsuleers versus consoleers". Maybe throwing a bomb or two at a planet will bring back good old splash damage, just .. differently.

Well CCP, you have been given a chance to do something great. Something not seen before. Something that can still prove that you are leading the MMO field. You have created another MMO universe, making it dependent on another separate MMO universe. You have been given the chance to cross boundaries that no one has even got close to crossing.
I have four words of advice.

Love the concept and idea but sometimes the best laid plans turn out badly. Take your time on this and get it right is my main say in this. The ambition is admirable and I cant wait to see what happens with it. I hope it adds a whole new complexity to the game. I also hope you keep it in the niche you are looking for and not making a huge GoW map. I understand why a small portion are upset as you teased how it would affect EVE but gave zero detail. I think this is so you can change things as needed and do not lock yourself in to anything. Way to lead the way into what could be an interesting future for the sandbox and MMO genre. Anyways I hope its successful but again take your time and make your decisions wisely. |

It's not fair to close all the different Dust discussion threads and lump everything into 1 OOP thread.
It would be like taking all the EVE forum sections, closing them, and saying that from now on, everyone posts in 1 thread. Good lucking getting your message across
If Dust had little to do with EVE other than story background, this would be acceptable. But if Dust influences 0.0 sov, it is very important to EVE, and by no means classify as OOP thread.
CCP need to set their policy strait to all of its employees - is Dust part of EVE game mechanics or is it completely separate? |

There is a question I have seen brought up a few times in-game and out. WH space, will Dust have any effect on these mechanics. Or is it restricted to pos bashing and planet takeovers in 0.0 Everything I have read so far as been pure speculation and nothing more excpet form what I have heard come directly CCP's mouth. I think everyone needs to calm down and be open-minded to this as much as possible until we have more intel on it. Just my 2-cents. Dont spend it all in one place -Ara |

Well we will see. A lot of companies did shift their interest to the console before CCP,and in most cases the PCbased players suffered under such moves. and thats what i am afraid of,bc i love this game and wouldn,t be yelling around otherwise but ok ,let CCP tell us right now what to expect then() and why this is done console only and not PC ,let them tell us the reason why(should be money, but a lot of us already payed a lot )

I'm going to point something out, but leave it up to you as a good thing or a bad thing concerning whether DUST will be a success or not.
We have fairly solid info at this point that we will be suppling isk (and quite possibly equipment) to the players of DUST to get them to fight our ground wars for us.
Now think about that.
If we are paying them isk, this means they will have an outlet to spend that isk on. Most likely equipment and weapons, or personal upgrades to equipment and weapons we provide as part of the contract.
Since they are paying for this stuff, that means that if it blows up it won't just simply respawn with the character if he dies.
This means that in this console based FPS there will be consequences to deal with if/when you die.
You can make of that what you like, but personally I think that this will be a huge draw to the more mature console gamer (yes they do exist). Couple that with EVE players that will want to participate in DUST as well, instead of just blowing off an hour here and there with HALO and you have the makings of something truly remarkable in the console FPS game market. That being a very mature, loyal player base that is invested in the game that they enjoy.
This lends a whole 'nother level to the concept.

Just an opinion and speculating like most but I think the affect on 0,0 space might be more minimal than folks think. Although the idea is outstanding you bring up a valid point. Also if the fps is as complex as EVE then you knock down the number that will play even more. I honestly think that at some point the console only part will disappear. It might be 6 months or so but still think it will. Exclusives happen all the time so people need to just calm down and be patient. This could be 2 yrs out for all anyone knows

Moved from a thoughtful thread by Digital Communist .........
If CCP want to increase profits over the next 5 to 10 years then relying on expanding concurrent users in Eve Online is not going to give them much growth. Better to leverage their success through licesensing (XBox Live), acquisition and exploitation of the brand through other channels.
Assuming Dust happens..... Let's hope they trial Dust on the Asian server first and perhaps start with Factional warfare, where the play style for sovereignty is more similar, changing more frequently. They have said that Sov will be affected by Dust but this may simply be a reduction in income from sov; we should wait for the detail on this before going emo.
Yes, poor old CCP has under-estimated its players again and managed the announcement of Dust very badly. In another thread someone from CCP has compounded this by saying "come to Fanfest"to learn more ...... sorry guys but there is a recession on and we really shouldn't need to wait that long or spend cash to find out.
Lastly, of course I agree with DC that a huge opportunity is being missed by not exploring this grunt combat as an element of walking in stations and I am afraid that this may signal the deathnell of this feature .... on PC.
I can see the business need to do this CCP but I think you've done a bad job selling the benefits to us, your loyal customers.

I really enjoy EvE, without a console or ground combat, & just signed up for my third account.
I GUARANTEE, however, I am not buying a console to play EvE. If that becomes necessary, I will retire my characters and move on.
It might, or might not, be tolerable to play Eve with console players affecting the gameplay. Less fun, as it would detract from the immersive sand box experience which is so attractive, but possibly tolerable, depending.

And beside that , how many console players tend to stick with the game ?. What if the game will die in 6 month or so ? Who will be conquering planets then ?.
Realising it only to consoles is a fail and backstabb( due to additional fee, game cost, and most importantly new platfrom ) to EVE ONLINE community.

In fairness a large amount of FFXI players are console, around 45% I think a poll said taken a few months ago. So if its good people will stick with it. This isnt Warhawk we are talking about here. I understand that most console folks move from game to game but most console games are single player and most online are the same maps over and over and over. This could change all that.

Oh, so you want feedback? Sure.
Your forum moderation is the work of an absolute idiot.
Moving all discussion to a single thread makes the assumption that every DUST post/thread is meant for CCP digestion, and not a simple discussion between players. Nobody in their right mind is going to be holding discussions in what is likely to become a 40+ page thread bombarded by snarky one liners and text walls of incoherent whining.
All you've done is aggregated garbage for your convenience while killing any real content; an overall impressive showing of laziness and complete disdain towards players.
It's also hypocritical as hell to move it to Out of Pod Experience while shilling from the same breath how its integrated and important to EVE. Either you're lying to us because you don't want to admit DUST is a completely separate game, or you're annoyed because people actually have something to discuss in General Discussion.
Improving the signal to noise ratio of the forums by nuking everything is the epitome of community mismanagement.

Reposted again:
Posted in the COAD thread already but who knows if CCP will read either.
As explained so far seems a bit one sided. How are DUST players going to move from Planet to Planet, how about Planetary Bombardment.
If you were wanting a real word scenario think of this as a Beach Assault, you have landing ships, support ships naval gunfire. All of these elements fall within the EVE rather than the DUST Universe so where are they.
If you want to claim SOV you should have to protect your invasion fleet to the planet and while they are there. The Complaint has always been that people won't engage, here is an opportunity to make it happen.
So come on CCP either drop the link or make it work for both communities.

Actually, I don't. Odd, given that my arm is shot from the work that I do, and using a mouse is now painful. A controller would be a better choice... and yet, I stick to my PC.

Since they are paying for this stuff, that means that if it blows up it won't just simply respawn with the character if he dies. ... This lends a whole 'nother level to the concept.
In the main forums Digital Communist argued that the potential for transferring data to the consoles from the Eve servers would be minimal, as it would have to go through Microsoft or Sony - but actually there's no reason what you describe couldn't work.
DUST players won't need full market access, they just have to be able to buy things relevant to their mission. As CCP are describing this as a "console MMO" that means things to upgrade their characters - and basically there will have to be some form of crossover or PAYING console gamers with isk simply wouldn't be useful as a motivation.
There's a big difference between the relatively small amount of data needed to update a specialised DUST-only version of the market that can be directly or indirectly linked to the market in Eve; and the huge amount needed to run real-time game world interactions between the Eve and DUST game worlds. CCP will be missing out if the only data going between the two games is isk payment one way and battle results the other.

Further followup
(yes, "FIRST person shooter")
It sure looks like CCP is adding apples to oranges. Those who like RTS games are often different from those who like role play games, like EvE.
Adding a first person shooter to EvE is like adding orange flavor to Pepsi, & asking Pepsi drinkers to enjoy the new beverage.
Great, if you like orange flavor in your Pepsi. Not so great if you bought Pepsi for its cola taste.
Dust could be really, really too bad for EvE-on-line.
Why not just release it as its own separate game?.

The things that make Eve great to my mind are:
1) Consequences for Death - You don't just die and then respawn a few seconds later with all of your equipment, ready to run back into battle. You die, you may be sent a long way away from the battle by that death. You pretty much lose all of your equipment. You have to pay for a new clone.
2) The skill system. You don't become great in this game by spending 24/7 grinding away by killing the same thing over and over ad infinitum. You become great over time and through your own skill as a player.
3) The complexity. Eve makes you think. There are a vast number and complicated options for everything you do in the game. It's not dumbed down.
It really makes me sad to think of a game occupying that universe I have come to love and dumbing it down to the extent that the average console gamer will accept it.
I will die a little inside when I see a group of soldiers running about aimlessly without any tactical sense, and hopping back and forth like super mario rejects. Then dying and respawning 10 seconds later fully armed and armored and ready to run back into battle.
Can you imagine the rage and tears that would flow if they were actually knocked out of the fight after dying one time? Then the screaming that would occur if they had to PAY for a new clone and then rearm and armor themselves each time? That's pretty much what eve players have to live with. And I like it. It's Eve. It's why I play and I believe why Eve has been as much of a success as it has been. You are messing with that proven concept and the potential for dragging down the game I love scares me.

All speculation and assumptions. There was a time people could say flying around in empty space was dumbed down and how times have changed. A FPS can be complex if made properly and see no reason CCP cannot do that. No one has any info on what you assume in your post beyond a prejudice people have against people who play those games. I do not play those and I do not participate in console gaming just fyi. I just think its siily to assume so much so soon.

Personally I can't freaking wait.
I don't always like setting in front of my PC grinding away at EVE so the opportunity to still enjoy the EVEverse in my living room is right up my alley.
I am extremely apprehensive about the direction you seem to be taking with it though.
Not having a single player mode is a death blow. If you don't think so call up the Shadowrun team they can tell you just how idiotic it was and how it absolutely destroyed their game. The problem is the learning curve associated with picking up an FPS and going strait into PVP. Every FPS has its little control intricacies and not letting people get adapted to them first generally causes a lot of frustration when being thrown to the wolves. The BETA players of Shadowrun CRUSHED the new players and it made it a hostile environment that people didn't enjoy very much. I would say play it but the servers are dead so there may not be anyone hosting privately anymore. Not to mention you already have a ton of story material you could easily draw from. I can't even begin on which story I would love to play through. There are just too many good ones.
If you want to do it right you need to bust out with a Planetside like model for PVP zones. Having several hundred players shooting each other is by far more enjoyable than the HALO map memorization crap. You need huge maps with lots of players so that the battle tactics are more fluid and less camp. CCP mentions user created content at this point which is fine as long as someone screens the content prior to loading it because it would take about 5 minutes for the first trap map to go live otherwise.
CCP also says that the emphasis is on players playing against other players but the COOP modes are extremely popular. Just look at Left 4 Dead, Gears(Horde), Halo(COOP), Rainbow Six Vegas(Terrorist Hunt), and Call of Duty(zombies). These are every bit as fun to play as the pure PVP modes and can be added and balanced in regards to their effects on sovereignty and just might be necessary if for some reason sovereignty was stable for a period of time. If your going to make an EPIC FPS then just make it freaking EPIC!!! It needs a story mode, co-op mode, PVE mode, and pvp mode to even qualify for an acceptable modern FPS. Anything less and your just going lose chunks of the player base for FPS's.
The reason why I am ranting about PVE so much is again associated to a primary defect in Planetside and something that is mentioned again by CCP. That is lag and its effects on the FPS community. This is the primary reason I am so damned glad your not putting this on the PC. I don't know how your going to do the hit detection but on a console client side detection isn't going to be an issue like it is in Planetside. Just about all the console games restrict players from playing on maps where they would warp around due to their connection. Don't be naive and think that players won't try to use disco cheats and packet manipulation to gain an advantage. Set limits, enforce them, and don't cater to the whines about how how corp A can't play with its full membership because half is in the US and half is in EU. So what. When the tech catches up to make it possible cool but until then don't ruin the game by trying to do the impossible.
This is also why the PVE modes are so important. Bots don't care if you warp they still know where you are and react without a problem. This way if the big corps want to get their rocks off from halfway around the planet they can without latency being such a freaking issue.
IF its on 360 you had better make some freaking downloadable content for it like Caldari, Gallente, Minmatar, and Amarr outfits for my Avatar, backgrounds, dashboards, etc... even if it costs me Microsoft points I and many others will still buy it. Don't skimp on it either I want my Caldari combat armor and a freaking rifle to go with my Excel in space dashboard.
Oh did I mention I can't wait?

First when i heard some FPS is coming out for Eve.. thats was.. well make me very happy than just few seconds later i read "Console" all my hopes all my dreams crushed at that second.. okay i can understand ccp want some new customers like 100k or 200k /too good to be true.. dont think those 8million halo players coming for dust?/ but while getting those "console" ppl u just killed PC FPS lovers ? at that press release its been said last 3 years shangai studio worked on this.. and nothing explained in detail "yet" ? just a rendered video about some small skirmish some jeeps making manuevers some spaceship kind big thing /bf 2142 titan kind/ shooting each other and thats it ? after 3 years of work its only a pre rendered little skirmish ? woww.. they must be realy working their ass off tbh i realy wanna see improvements on CCP they should get more customer and get bigger.. but in the process they shoundt forget us.. again in that press release u guys said " our players more important than game itself" ha.. realy ? no one asked our opinion on this ? this is your way to show us how important we are ? soo if we wanna participate in this sov thing or surface war whatever u named we neeed to buy a console.. wow i felt so imporant..
gah.. i even wanna play a Real RTS for Eve.. but i'm sure if u guys goin to make that game u probably make it for hmm Mac only ? or some kind new console ?

DUST looks to be a cool concept. I dunno why people are predicting the death of eve as a result, and why people are indulging in the screaming, waving hands, gnashing of teeth and so forth when we know next to nothing about the game.
Lets not forget guys, the same people who make THIS game are behind dust, and evidently you all love eve enough to ***** on the forums, so maybe cut them some slack until we start being told exactly what the hell is going to be happening with the game.
I think its brave of CCP to attempt this kind of stuff, and I can't see them directly tying something to eve in a direct enough fashion to make a difference if they hadn't made the mechanics good and solid. I am NOT a console gamer, so I won't be playing this if it does go console exclusive, but I genuinely can't imagine that it will be. I'd think its probably being developed for consoles, and with a PC launch scheduled 6 months later. I imagine CCP don't want their whole universe being abbandoned for the new game until its made sure it works.
Oh and I LOVE how every other post is about moderation, not the game. Forums are fun like that.

1. Why dust 514 as title ?
2. Will CCP talk about dust 514 in fanfest 2009 ?
3. will wis be affected by dust 514 ?
4. Can Eve player chat with Dust 514 players ?
5. Is there a little early to talk about dust 514 given to Wis. is not released yet ?
6. Will wis release date get late because of dust 514 ?
7. Is the dust 514 war on a piece of land?
8. Is Dust 514 a name of a planet ?
9. How meny planets is dust 514 involved in ?
10. will it be any air combat in Dust 514 ?
11. Will it become a monthly payment of Dust 514 ?
12. Is Dust 514 only a console game ?
13. Why is CCP shy to show this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AelS0u8i2C0 ?
14. Will the market get affected by Dust 514 ?
15. How will EVE players be affected by a Dust 514 player ?
End of questions ;)

Look, I applaud CCP for being innovative, and the graphics on Dust look top notch. BUT this will be a BAD thing for Eve online.
Why:
Players in eve online will be subject to circumstances completely outside of the game that dictate whether they can compete in one of the basic and most important aspects of eve: owning space.
It takes away options and game play ability from paying members of Eve online, and that is always a bad thing. It's the same reason CCP does free expansions...they want everyone playing the SAME game, and not have a situation where player A can go 'here' but player B can't because he didn't buy the expansion. Well this is the same type of situation, only with sovereignty, and a seperate console game.
That's a horrendous game mechanic. Players who join corporations and alliances should not have to pay hard earned isk to someone else, wait however long it takes (an hour, a week, a month, etc) for Merc Group A, playing a completely separate game, to capture a planet in order for that alliance to achieve their goals of space ownership within Eve.
And then theres the question of game balance within dust. If dust is hooked up to eve, but turns out to be a respawn zerg fest like a counterstrike or TF2 or world of warcraft then it negatively affects the balance within eve as well and wrecs sovereignty. Whats the backup plan for that? Is there one? The damage would have already been done and you'd get an NGE situation where the players don't come back.
My vote is to release DUST as a completely separate stand alone game and forget about trying to connect it to EVE. Eve is it's own game, EVE's players should dictate what happens within EVE, it's that simple.

I know there will be some interaction but its not been made clear yet as to how much so im eagerly awaiting more information on this.

So far, I love this idea.
A few key aspects that I believe would make this an epic win for CCP and Eve players alike would be. - Release WiS already and allow Dust players to walk with us. - Add shops in WiS for us Eve players to take advantage of the consumer demand the Dust players will create. - Introducing a robust integration for Eve Corps/Alliances to influence Dust activities; like financing or supplying the war activities on the planet side. - Ensure the balance is Eve players will have the supplies/cash and the Dust players will have the ability to fight the battles. - Make Dust for both PS3 and Xbox360 but allow us all to interact in the station and on the battlefield. I think this aspect alone would help significantly in making a successful game, I'm sure everyone that has played a console FPS wishes they could go head to head with that fanboy friend of theirs that owns the competing console. I realize this is a very unlikely case, so at the very least, please have a version for both consoles as not all of us own the other one.
I see this could be really cool for Eve players if our role is like the Dictators/Leaders in the grand scale war of New Eden and Dust is just another tool in our strategic chest.
At the very least, I would say this would be good for all Eve players if the Dust players can't create 'stuff' but can just buy it, but have to buy it from us, this would create a bunch of new markets with a lot of consumer demand. I think it would be a lot of fun as an Eve player to be supplying bullets to both sides in the ground war
A few questions I'd love to hear the answers to; - the official word on which console(s) this is planned for and how this is going to work on their respective 'online systems' (refer to above for what I'd like to see) - Will there be a monthly fee for Dust? If not, will you be charging for expansions, etc?(I'd prefer a monthly fee because I like the 'free' expansions) - If there is a monthly fee will you offer a PLEX like system for Dust? - Would I be able to transfer ISK to my Dust character from my Eve character? - How do you plan to transport Dust troops between planets/systems/regions? Would be cool, but I doubt you'll have Eve transport missions to move players around? Or maybe that would be the case and you would move Dust soldiers (not actual players, just like an item that represents a 'slot') to different stations and the Dust players than can 'jump clone' to those 'slots'. Would be an interesting way to have Eve alliances bring reinforcements to planets they wish to gain sovereignty on.
I'm bursting with questions about this game, I have to say I'm very excited about Eve ground war! I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks might happen with Dust, and any feedback on these above ideas! This may be a golden opportunity for us to guide the reality of Dust into our wallet fattening ideal!

From the backstory, pod pilots are like unto gods to everyone else in the galaxy. They have been engineered and implanted to be uber-smart and have uber-perception and uber-reflexes; far beyond what non-pod-pilots have. There is much more to being a pod-pilot than "being able to plug yourself into a spaceship." If CCP wants to have the equivalent for ground troups, hey that's fine, but based on current backstory I would not expect it to be the case.

Hiding my wallet until October, I guess.
We've all seen too many companies ruin their game, and it is easily imaginable how this could be an example.
Eve players could be outnumbered 100 to 1 by console players.
Anyone care to wager which audience CCP caters to and gives power to at that point?
I can also imagine how it could be cool, but I can't subscribe to my imagination.

Edited by: Damion Stranek on 19/08/2009 21:45:40 With the amount of ignorant fear mongering and alarmist propaganda here I'd think we were talking about US healthcare reform.
DUST514 is a huge step for CCP and a great addition for both PC and Console gamers. Initially, when I saw DUST514 announced as a console exclusive, I was disappointed. Then I realized it was actually a good idea to distinguish the two player bases. The last thing I want is to be flying around New Eden with a bunch of 11 year olds spamming Chuck Norris jokes in local chat. And it WILL stay that way, because it is nonsensical for DUST to include every feature of Eve Online's space-based gameplay. They are two SEPARATE games with, as far as we know, META-GAME interaction.
Let me paint you a picture of what this interaction might include.
1. First, ISK is allocated by corporations to the defense of certain planets. Players in DUST then use this ISK allocation in purchasing their class setups.
2. Alternatively, within EVE, Industrial corps manufacture weapons that are then shipped to planets and are available in limited supply to players in DUST.
All of this leads up to the main event.
3. Inside of EVE, Alliance XYZ invades the planet of Rigel IV belonging to Alliance ABC. As soon as the Planetary Invasion order goes through, a new server is created within the DUST514 client that allows for affiliated players to queue up for the invasion. Once the queue is full, the invasion scenario begins with the attacking players dropping in from orbit, and the defenders manning Eve-Online-player-built planetary defense guns/lasers/missile launchers. The invasion then proceeds through a string of scenarios, before culminating in an assault on one of the planet's major cities.
DISCLAIMER: This is all my own speculation based on what I believe would be reasonable cross-game interaction.
Personally, I think people aren't giving CCP enough credit. They have given us what I think many of us agree would be one of the premier MMO's on the market today. The addition of a ground-based FPS aspect of the game for consoles is many-fold in its advantages.
1. It adds a new level of complexity for Eve Online's primary player base, who now are able to coordinate inter-stellar warfare on an unprecedented level. 2. CCP profits greatly from the horde of 11 year Halo h4xors who want to play a fancy-looking and addictive FPS in the form of DUST514. 3. CCP profits from the influx of players to Eve Online who now are able to fulfill their ultimate fantasy of waging true inter-galactic warfare on a staggering level. 4. New economic niches are created by the interaction of DUST514 and Eve Online, expanding Eve's attraction to a wider player base. 5. Its just way to goddamn cool not to do 6. Yes, while it would be nice to get PC users involved with DUST514, I think many players don't feel like paying an additional fee, nor do we need a second MMO to sap our souls.
I'd like to finish by saying that we should have some faith in CCP's ability to pull this off. Also, to all the people saying "OMG this means no more money to support EVE-O!!!" or saying that this is A MASSIVE BETRAYAL (To who? The 30+ year old majority of subscribers who suck at FPS games?), just shut up. You are doing no one any good, and we should wait for more information before proclaiming the apocalypse.

It sounds like Eve players and Dust players are going to be somewhat seperated from each other.
This is disappointing, as I and many others would just love to rain down holy hell on the console ne'er-do-wells as they line up their next HEADSHOT; or at least let us 'transport' these console people so we can jettison->lock target their ass.
There has to be something in this for Eve players. AT the moment it sounds like we're getting a not-entirely-welcome new sov. mechanic foisted on us. Please don't let this become an unnecessary ISK sink for existing Eve alliances/players, where we can't even watch or take part in it.

Release it only to consoles is a fail and backstabb( due to additional fee, game cost, and most importantly new platfrom ) to EVE ONLINE community.

Its amazing how a 4 minute video can make people whine so much.
I love the concept of the game, I love the idea of tying the two games together. Its never been done before and as a game designer, I applaud CCP's decision. However, I can't seem to find a logical reason for releasing the game only for consoles. I will be very interested to hear CCP's reasoning on that choice.
I think that we, as Eve players, need to accept that CCP is becoming more then a one-game-company. There are going to be other games because thats what a successful company does.
And there will be whiners and there will be /rage quitters, but every patch and every game has them. They make a big deal, act like people care about their opinion and then finally leave. The truth of the matter is the game will get on with or without you. Can anyone remember the names of the people that /rage quit when the speed nerf hit? Neither can I.

I had posted this in another thread, but thought it might be helpful here as well.
From the Gamescom 2009 vid:"paraphrased" near the 03:30 mark.
DUST 514, alone, will dictate the control of "Planets" within the Solar Systems. The control of Planets will be one input, of many, that go into Sov.
DUST will become one of the inputs of the Sov system.
Thats my take. Check out the vid for yourself.

Hmm..
The whole concept.. oh, that gives me a happy. I think its very ambitious, and oddly enough, it wouldn't be all that hard to do. However, the big thing would be to make the console game good enough that you will have people playing it for years. It would have to beat Halo, Half Life, and/or Quake on multiple levels for you to get the longevity..
But.. a large part of their success has been the ability to develop mods to improve the game. If players, on either the Dust side or the Eve side can't "build maps" to a certain extent, then it might not be successful. That being said, you can't allow too much customization because then you will have maps that are impossible to defeat.
And not sure about only porting it to Consoles either, but I can't say if its brilliant, or if it hurts Eve Pilots and alliances. Though I'm glad you decided that it would be only an aspect of sov, and not the whole cake. Still, it would be nice for your loyal customers to be able to get into the action too.. (without having to pay for extra hardware, extra connections, extra services..).
Yeah, I'm very excited to see what you have planned. And I'm very excited about the possibilities of knocking troop transports out of the sky before they have a chance to land. That would be just too cool.
I only do diplomancy because I haven't found you.. yet. |

If people would calm down they would too. What you need to understand is that gaming will continue to grow and evolve beyond how we currently perceive it.
The past few years have seen a stagnation in new development. Virtually nothing in gaming has changed. Bean counters have dominated gaming mechanics which has resulted in cookie cutter game after cookie cutter game. The only way that changes is if someone isn't dominated by the bean counters. I only know of two companies that are going against the grain and only one of those has a game on the market. That would be CCP.
I welcome any changes because I trust CCP to actually make gaming interesting while everyone else keeps making clones of other games. CCP isn't SOE. They have made a successful game out of EVE against all odds while many other titles that could have dwarfed it were crushed by shoddy developers. That sums up every one of the SOE titles despite games like LOTRO and SWG having massive built in fan bases yet EVE has a larger subscription base.
CCP can pull it off IMHO.

I've said it before, but since CCP's pretending to care about our views in this thread I'll say it again.
I'm angry.
You're taking a VERY important part of the game, Sov mechanics, which thousands of people have spent hours and days defending and attacking, and have suddenly up and torn it away from us.
We are the ones who'll pay for their mistakes on the ground. Not them. For them, it's just be another DE_Dust. Play, have fun whether you win or loose. But the EVE player base suffers when they loose. We're the ones who live there.
The console only part is the biggest ball stomp. Not only have you taken one of the control over 0.0 Sov from the original game, but have given it to another gaming system altogether.
I'm angry, and feeling more than just a little backstabbed
And while this is probably overly Doom and Gloom, and CCP has given no help on how much this would effect Sov, it still scares me that a group of players with no affiliation to EVE Online, can effect 0.0 Sov. --------------------------------------------

FUD.. Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt..
IMHO CCP have made a mistake by putting something out there about Sov without a decent devblog explaining to its long-term players that CCP recognises the 'end-game' aspect of 0.0 sov, and isn't going to do anything that will detract from the games appeal for those mature players. CCP are really smart people! I'm sure they know this. I'm sure they don't have the detail worked out on how this stuff is going to work. All we need to hear is confirmation that they won't screw the ultimate strategy side of the game up for us and we'll relax a bit.
A PC edition of Dust would be nice, but I for one would save up and buy a console specifically to play this based on CCP's brand alone. Yes I'm a CCP fanboi (unashamedly admitted - I think they've earnt it). Maybe they have learnt that their player base complains vocally about everything and have given up trying to manage us? If so - mistake, guys. We just need some more communications and reassurance.

I love the DUST idea. I like having many facets that can effect EVE (like console or WEB). I especially like the idea of DUST players being able to (possibly) tip the scale of sovereignty in 0.0! My only complaint is I was hoping WiS and atmospheric flight have not come out (and most likely won't) before DUST.
Regardless, CCP, you have my many accounts for a long time :)

My biggest concern is how long will DUST last. Let me explain this one. Besides Halo and CoD, Most FPS games wont hold the players interest longer then 3 months. Let alone several years. What will CCP do when DUSTs (even if it is an initial success) Population begins to decline rapidly. It doesnt take a genius to figure out that the chances are much higher for Eve online to still be around for 5 years with about 200k subs then Dust will be around for 2 years with more then a 1000 active players.
How will you keep interest, is it even possible or will Dust be detached of Eve's universe when the population of dust declines heavily?

I love all these "FPS on keyboard and mouse only" tears.
You guys do realize that if DUST is remotely sucessful, there will be more people logged in via console at any given time than the entire EVE subscription base easily.
We are the gods, they are the servants. So stop with the river of tears already.
DUST being console based only is by far the best way. The amount of people that play fps games instead of on the pc far outweights you meager 300k+ eve players.
Again, stop with the tears you narrow minded, can't adapt, don't know how to read all the facts, speculating, tin-foil hat wearing, fps pc only losers.

According to fact and not speculation the game will do just fine. Of course it needs to be a good game but that's a given. If it isn't a good game then detaching the two would be a requirement. If that's the case then I would definitely want it integrated into EVE.

Edited by: Joey2cool on 19/08/2009 23:25:59 id be interested to know if our eve online subscription will transfer over to the console game? ie will there be a subscription charge to play DUST? (i hope not as it will lead to a small player base due to these charges, which in turn would detract from any sov mechanic thought about by CCP) and if there is a sub, does a sub to ccp get both games, or do we have to shell more money to play dust?
Also how will they keep it fresh? part of the reason people join and keep playing eve is due to expanding universe and updates on a pretty regular cycle. will dust have this too? ever increasing features? what about a Dust 2? how would that then tie into the mechanics. if they set the sov to be based off this game then what would happen if a sequel was to be developed? (which tbh would be stupid not to consider due to the popularity of console games)
EDIT: jus noted my second point has already been mentioned!

exactly, of the top ten that have been there a long time, halo and CoD, they are truly epic 1st person shooters. Dust would hvae to match this to have any hope of maintaining fanbase. And if they want to be like the halo franchise, there has to be sequels, which ties into my ppost above, how would that work?

ok, yes i have read all thats gone before so i may repeat others so sorry. but this game looks realy good i am a fps nut and the best way to play them by far is on a keboard and mouse. so come on ccp before you release this re think the pc version please if it has taken you 3/4/5/6 years to develop this then putting it out on the pc would be an easy thing for you guys to do. i think you are being greedy becouse you think if you put it out to the pc users that you will loose a lot of your eve players that you have now. oh yes the ones that put you where you are now the ones that have been paying month in month out to fund this project yes the ones you dont seem to care about now. oh look they are happy over there playing lets do somthing else over here that they cant access with there pc's lol lmfao well it's NOT FUNNY you need to re think cos you are going to p*ss a lot of people off not suere if you guys have seen this link http://www.obscurereality.org/2009/08/18/dust-514-one-universe- one-war/ but it is intresting and the concept is sound

Do not hedge your bets on this CCP. Go into this full bore and with, to be bluntly, your balls swinging out in the sunshine. Do what everyone's been waiting for since Quake 2 turned FPS gaming into god's own playhouse: Give persistence and meaning to FPS combat.
Do (Or you have hopefully done): 1. Use the Frostbite engine.
2. Eschew "OMG, SHADOWS" for tactical and strategic gameplay depth.
3. Ignore Planetside's capture mechanic completely. For that matter, ignore everything about Planetside except the moments where you had 300 people slamming into each other and it wasn't just an idiotic Tower fight.
4. Give it a single player campaign on the level of a CoD game - which means a lot of simple maps and some stupid AI.
5. DO NOT use "time based" skill training like in EvE. Look ye to Battlefield: 2 and Battlefield: 2142. Player skill should matter more than how long someone's been playing, always.
6. Get to a library and study the city engagements of World War II, Iraq, and Afghanistan. If you make a map that looks like Wake Island, may the gods smite you.
7. Involve the community. Give us map making tools and a process by which player made maps are incorporated into updates and then sit back and get rich. Do not be afraid of (truly) player made content, embrace it so tightly that its eyes burst out.
8. Do not segregate the player base as has happened in EVE: Empire for the have-nots, 0.0 for the haves, LowSec for the crazies is not working for anyone.
9. Players fighting other Players should carry significantly greater rewards than Players fighting bots. Look at ChromeHounds and why its campaign mechanic fails utterly.
10. Look to the Shadowrun release and avoid every single one of their mistakes. "We will release it when it is done" is a proper answer. You have a brand, releasing a crap product will murder it. Imagine if the Shadowrun team had gotten just 6 months to a year more - the positive effect across the entire brand would have well made up for the extra development cost. Brand growth is positive feedback to an asymptotic bound based on saturation for a given product. Ask yourself these questions:
How many Civilization games (addons, enhancements, whatever) are there and what effect does a new release have on the sales of old titles?
How many Masters of Orion games are there?
11. Two axioms: "Time is Money" and "Variable Ratio Schedule has a high rate of responding".
------
Personally, I'm incredibly interested in this announcement. I'm hopeful that you guys don't screw it up because if you hit the 70% of my personal desire, I'll be ditching my EVE account and playing a ground pounder.

Slightly into the future here, but I was wondering on how will it work in terms of upgrades/expansions?
For example, in EVE we get a major expansion every 6 months or so, with minor tweaks in between, with Dust, the downloadable content can be done whenever for the minor ones, but what happens after a few years? will Dust be re-released as an entire update? as a new game? for new consoles maybe?
Me and some corp mates were discussing it and we thought it was an interesting point, a bit early to be asking about it but we thought it was a fair question. What does everyone else think about this?
And before anyone else goes "durp durp pc versions can have dem free durp" you can download entire games onto a console, such as Battlefield 1943, so will it be done the same way I wonder.

Well the only hitch to free content updates would be the 360 as several people have stated ms requires you to charge for them so they can get a cut? Don't own a 360 so don't know if that is true.

As you probably already know, how well a console app is with updates is as good as the developer makes it. I've seen some games which pretty much necessitate a full client download in order to update properly, others which have been designed to be updated as the game matures. Note, I'm not specifically referring to DLC (for pay) here.
One would hope that CCP is keeping this in mind as they design their game's engine and overall architecture such that future updates won't require a 400 meg download. Uncharted 2 for instance has a lot of their multiplayer component dictated by the developer remotely. They can go so far as to move weapons and objects in the environment, and the next time you connect it updates as per those instructions. This way they can push down changes to maps and even game modes without requiring a specific update.
Pretty thmart.

EXACTLY we need a PC Version of this game too and these are the reasons why 1... BECAUSE most EVE-Players use the PC 2... alot of FPS (of what i seen on the vid looks alot like Battlefield 2142 (and the others)) and even RTS Game players are used to the PC Controls (WASD-etcetcetc). 3... You will get a greater market out of this meaning more $$$$$ money. 4... Alot less people will be upset and any other reasons
I've played eve for 6 years and i don't have a xbox360 nor a PS3 because i spent most my money on the computer and i like watchign tv wile im on the computer too. ___

Well then let me sooth your tears by saying Dust doesn't control Sovereignty but is just a part of its mechanics.
If you would read rather than rant you would already know that because its been said about 10k times in the last two days in response to posts like yours.
I'm 100% against ANY of the 0.0 Sov mechanics being outside the EVE playerbases control.
I'm quite aware that they've stated "Part", what I'm scared of is HOW much of a "part" they've taken out of our control. Too little, then Alliances won't bother to supply them with ISK, too much, you're taking control of where players live out of their hands.
Nobody knows where this mystical "Just right" is, however, if it's too little, and thus too little ISK, then DUST will likely be stale, and won't last long. So from what I can see, they're more likely gonna give them too much control.
ESPECIALLY with a line like "Control the planet, control the System" or somesuch --------------------------------------------

What if CCP just came one day and said. EVE is done. When your accounts expire they will not be renewed. In one year the EVE servers will be shut down". What will everyone do then? Whine about how sad life is? Live is NEVER fair.
People are already threatening to cancel their accounts. If you expect consideration from CCP, where is your loyality to them?

Yes, I'm torn between calling it "Artistic License" or "Dramatic Impact".
Frankly, everyone here coughed up the cash for a computer... if you really want to be involved in this aspect of EVE they can do the same for a console. In fact, if I want to dabble I'd have to do the same thing... but I'll most likely interact (and influence) DUST from the EVE side of things for a while (my FPS reflexes are not what they used to be).
Of course, we could really be honest (gasp) and acknowledge that most people that own a computer for gaming also own a console.
I find platform snobbery highly amusing, not to mention hypocritical.

Its already three years into development and all the dust content sans the fps code can be dropped right into the wis code for maximum time effeciency plus keep the look and feel of both games identical. Late 2010 sounds about right.

How refreshingly realistic.
Relax, out of MM's membership you likely have several hundred people minimum that not only own a console, but will happily be spending part of their time playing DUST... probably in a DUST corp/alliance dedicated to supporting MM's territorial claims. right from what i can guage from all the researching ive been doing about Dust 514 ive come to a lot of conclusions as to why CCP have decided to do what they've done.
1) Console vs PC CCP's initialy said console only, due to it being ported to the Xbox its a very short step to being made PC compatible. BUT has anyone thought about the skill involved in pwning using a keyboard and mouse vs a gamepad? if console players fought pc players in fps games, console players would rage! and rightly so. bear that in mind guys and girls!!
2) why 514? now ive heard about hints to clones and to the next novel coming out to reveal something to do with the 514 number. my interpretation? your initial purchase of Dust 514 alows u to play and to fight, it allows you to die... 514 times. then u purchase a licence like eve online players buy a months game time. for 514 more lives. storyline styled reasons could be that cloning a single DNA chain degrades after 514th generation.
3)ISK's? WTF? everyone who plays eve knows they can buy Plex's for in game ISK's, so why not have the console players get paid for successful campaigns so they can buy more cloning abilities. this does change the whole demi god thing but bear in mind i could see Dust being pure fps skill n no upgrade/modding of skills etc...
4)Planetary bombardment if anyone at CCP knows anything about war in any shape or form its that air power trumps all, and when u couple an fps ground warfare with a MMO space sim, dont u think theyd think that ud have the ability to completely control the skies and in effect crush any opposition down below? do we not already have bunkers in factional warfare that are a target for control of space? ccp could easily allocate 6 bunkers around a planet that if you have control over while there is still an active campaign on the planet, it allows a planetary bombardment of enemy forces. but as anything in eve, if theres the option for planetary bombardment, the campaign on Dust servers will probably centre on clone points and planetary defence installations.
btw these are just m,y thoughts on this, guesses as to what CCP are doing, although id say very well educated guesses.

This thread needs some more speculation!
CCP has been "delaying" the redoing of planetary graphics with one excuse or another since Trinity. Now that we are getting a form of planetary interaction, could we be getting some new, completely cool visual/informational feedback from Dust on a new planetary graphics system?

All I can say to you (CCP) is that I'm surprised by the announcement, and I really hope that this isn't going to be for consoles alone. If DUST 514 were to be an integrated system... a core attribute to the current EVE Online experience, you'd be a part of something so fantastic that nobody has ever dared to dream of being possible.
Others may have tried, but let me tell you... they failed. I think that DUST 514 would best be utilized by the current EVE Online player base, for starters. So my opinion is that DUST 514 shouldn't just be a console title, but a PC title as well. I'd gladly pay $60 for a PC version of DUST 514 that could be linked to my current EVE Online account.
Now obviously, there's a lot of room to speculate as to what the gameplay elements of DUST 514 will be. My speculation is it'll be a tactical shooter where a player engages in combat with other players, and also commands a squad of AI they can issue real-time orders to in the field, and that there will be a separate skill system, not too dissimilar from EVE Online, where a player can specialize what type of soldier he is. Is he a leader, or is he a follower? Does he prefer stealth tactics, or does he prefer out-and-out in-your-face bloody combat?
If my speculation is correct, a system such as this could be integrated into EVE Online, allowing pod pilots to take up arms planetside, but only after specific training that is unique to pod pilots to condition them for ground combat. Because lets face it, in the world of EVE, the true commanders of the battlefield are the ones in the skies above. However, having the ability to start out as a foot soldier would still be readily available to those of us who have free character slots. Maybe even the option to purchase additional character slots could be added for players who integrate a DUST account into their EVE account.
In my opinion, this would be the best course to take with DUST. That being... DUST 514 being available for PC, and allowing seamless integration of a DUST account into an EVE account, unlocking the potential for pod pilots to shed their metal skin, and take up arms on the ground. I know that from my perspective... if I was contracting a military force in EVE to take control of a planetary sector, I'd want to be on the ground with a weapon in-hand to make sure it gets done right.

My guess is that this is exactly what is going to happen. All this console only info is because ccp has no presence in the console market and already has a huge presence in the pc so all thier focus will be on getting console players aware and interested. Its already a given that an integrated pc release will sell immediatly.

Quote: and when u couple an fps ground warfare with a MMO space sim, dont u think theyd think that ud have the ability to completely control the skies and in effect crush any opposition down below?
Except for maybe a very small handful of people that used air power in Battlefield, I spent a lot of time laughing at the occasional helicopter or jet that flew by and got turned into paste. Tanks and Walkers (Specific to 2142) scared the ever living crap out of me. In a game of capture and control, air power's greatest use is anti-vehicle and relaying enemy movements. I'd rather have a grunt on the ground with a machinegun than 5 flyboys swooping by and wasting ammo on targets they have no hope of hitting.

Yes, but what's the use of bombarding the enemy mercilessly if you intend to capture the planet? Directed orbital bombardment is a useful strategic tool to hit a base or a hardened position, but once the fighting turns to the cities you don't want to strike those unless you plan on glassing the planet and starting the infrastructure over. A valid tactic, but useless if you actually intend to capture and hold.
Quote: but as anything in eve, if theres the option for planetary bombardment, the campaign on Dust servers will probably centre on clone points and planetary defence installations.
Go read Footfall and understand why the concept of a "Planetary Defense Installation" is ridiculous.

Fine. I think CCP is making this move to allow people, who don't want to train for 5 yrs to do anything worth while in Eve, to take part is this great Universe. To enrichen them.
The reason that people are against it is due to their lack of interpersonal relationship skills. If they can't force them to be slaves with the threat to kick them out of their super cool Alliance, they don't think they will be able to control these insta gratification getting, non deserving, no life having, Pod Pilot wantabees.
Its all about the control stupid. Oh yea, it might actually bring some diversity to the game, God forbid that.
I heard a rumor that CCP might make some extra spending money, but I'm waiting on confirmation of that.

I mean it is not unexpected and not something I would not do in your place. But from the looks of it it is way too detached and any connections to EvE would most likely be gimmicks unless you want to nuke your flagship.
Also, you overestimate EvE IP.

Actually the eve ip is well known to many general gamers. Its just all the ones I know don't have the soul devouring amounts of free time or motivation to really do anything in the game past zapping npc or sitting in a belt mining so they lose interest and let the sub lapse. Dust will let the ip become available to those who would like to be part of eve and influance events but just want a quick round or two of action. Brilliance on ccp's part and as long as the game itself is solid and made available to the pc crowd it will take off and stay flying for years to come. Yeah I'm hyped about it.

downtym.. i love it when people with half a brain and an oversized ego pulls apart sum1s post thinking theyre all that.
firstly u havent ever played fps shooters on pc AND on consoles, because if you had you would know instinctively that the level of precision and relative ease of use of a keyboard/mouse configuration vastly exceeds any console game pad out there. if you're confused by this go back to putting pretty coloured shapes through their matching holes.
secondly.. the 514 idea... its speculation, dumbass! and i dont see u come up with anything better. plus it makes business sense for ccp to get a type of subscription from other avenues.
thirdly whats above the sky.. ohh! space! u control the space around a planet u control the sky underneath and the planet below that. i ment that comment in terms of a planetary bombardment. so u can have ur 5 men with rocket launchers, cause ill outrange and outgun u everytime.
fourthly, ur implying that theirs going to be player generated structures on this planet? that means CCP would be using Dust in colaboration with Eve Online in such a complex manner as to derive minerals from planets?? already?? the planets battlegrounds on Dust are going to be purely generated on a needs be basis. theyre not going to be custom mapped, cause if u think they are.. u can go pay the 1000's of level editors to create unique battlefields for the 1000's of planets that will be included.
and about the reference, no i havent read footfall but i understand it was written in the 80's during the cold war about an alien invasion of earth. firstly a hell of a lots changed since the 80's! in the 80's people wouldnt have even thought the processing power of todays computers would even be possible. in the 80's no one gave an eco-activist the time of day, now a would have been president does sell out lectures on just that. time change and peoples beliefs on what can be done changes. Planetary defences are not entirely laughable now, tho they were in the 80's, but eve isnt set in the 80's downtym! havent u realised that? so in the fictional universe set faaaaaar in the future i personally believe planetary defences wont be a joke at all!

I imagine it'd be a non-critical part of sovereignty; that is, it only helps to have planetary sovereignty, but is in no way necessary to hold and claim that system. Only time will tell of course, and I have doubts we'll hear any solid details for another six months, minimum.

Game "not equal" RL. Its a game, don't expect everything to be fully realistic.
Besides, how much of what people believed in the past, about the future, actually turned out correct? Even much of the content made in the 80s was way off, and its worse as you go farther back. Its absurd to think that it wouldn't still be the case.

Pros: I LOVE DUST 514. The short vid was awesome! The camera has a realistic feel to it. I fly by these planets with cities all over them and I can't go land there and check it out... while this game doesn't completely solve that it brings the next best thing.
Think of the furute interoperability: Planetary bombardments. Overtaking stations. Moving, building, and selling equipment for the ground forces.
Cons: BUT....console only??? I shure hope CCP lsitens to their fanbase. I seriously want a PC release. If this is going to be an MMO it's going to need to expand. It's going to need to tie in to EVE-Online as seamless as possible. My ultimate wet dream would be for Dust 514 to be in the EVE client itself, a completely seamless transition between space and planets... but I won't get everything I want.

basheron... i rele do share ur passion bt i doubt itll ever go seamless :( the current eve client isnt built of the right stuff to bring fast paced fps gameplay like they want to, and then spin around to a ridiculously expansive space sim.
we'd have to wait for ccp to rewrite eve to a totally new graphics engine :S that could prove fatal.

Now that that's out of the way, I actually like the concept that dust proposes, it could be very revolutionary. Also, I have waited, along with many other MMO gamers, for a good MMOFPS. What I think would be a terrible mistake is denying PC gamers(AKA people who play eve, go figure)the ability to buy the game and play it on the same machine they play eve on.(again, go figure) By restricting it to consoles only it really does come off as a massive slap in the face to the players that have worked hard to make eve what it is. Theres just simply no strong reason for it. The only reason CCP gave is that playing an fps with a controller is playing with a handicap vs how much easier keyboard + mouse control is. It's a very weak reason to deny your original customers access to dust. (unless they have the needed console of course) It will leave a very bad taste in a lot of original customers mouths to know that if they want any control over a planets control and sovereignty they already worked hard to establish, they better have the right console.
Great concept, and i'll be right there when/IF the PC version comes. If not, I can't see it going over well at all.

Ok heres my thoughts on this, who remembers mech warrior? It was a very good game for the pc then microsoft bought out the game and ported it over to xbox and no longer suported the pc version.
The game on the xbox lasted about a year then died. This is what im worried about microsoft buying the game from ccp and then with the interest in the xbox falls off they let the game just die.
I moved on to AA after that and then to eve, but just to see consol mentioned with anything to do with eve just brings back some bad memorys.

So it is entirely possible that Dust 514 = the console game tied in to eve and Dust = wis.

One crucial thing dawned on me: CCP is trying to move from comfortable niche into the most mainstream game style they can. This is pretty huge.
All they really have to help them is the support of the existing community that will give the FPS kiddies some feeling of relevance and belonging.
Also I doubt they plan for MMO FPS. It is just FPS that has some minor ties to the EvE universe. You dump a few bytes of items on them they dump a byte of result back and if you keep doing that you get half a ghost POS max. I would not be afraid of huge effect on SOV, they are very conservative, just look at FW (or T3 or anything really). It is pretty much completely unrelated to EvE, just using EVE as promotion which is so weak IP it is not even in the title.

If I wanted to play a FPS game, that's what I'd be doing. Instead, I play EVE....far too much, I might add (currently 3 accounts here). I'll bet there are many others in the game that feel the same way. Given the success EVE has enjoyed and the loyalty of its players, do you really feel a FPS is needed to enhance the game? While CCP hasn't always listened to everything the player base has suggested or desired, they have a history of taking input from the masses and allowing that to guide decisions that ultimately affect gameplay for all of us. And that has been greatly appreciated. I haven't always agreed with the changes, but many that I didn't think I would like have worked out fine. Those changes, however, were all within the existing structure of the game and didn't involve new interfaces, separate player bases or getting away from the basic space combat element of the game.
Why is CCP going in this direction instead of fixing things that need improving in what they already have (can you say "lag in fleet fights"?). And sovereignty can be repaired in other ways with far less drastic measures.
With this change, CCP may achieve what I have failed to do on my own on a couple of other occasions....and that is get me to finally quit this addictive game for good.

I doubt CCP will ever let the rights to EVE slip anytime soon. They know they have a beautiful IP that's ridiculously full of potential and could literally be (and has been) expanded and enriched for years. If EVE does leave CCP then it will be a dark day for everyone here.
On a side note.
I kinda support the game play being dumbed down a little to fit the minds of the console kiddies only because of how it will interact with EVE Online. The console players will do what their best at: shoot, kill, respawn, mindlessly at the whims of the EVE players. We'll do the thinking so they don't have to. I only hope that the IP lore won't be diminished as well.

I am ready to get my RTS on!!! I can not wait to hear about that part of it more. I will play all three parts (Eve, RTS and Dust) of it if our subscription in eve covers any subscription in Dust. I hope there is not a subscription for dust because I do not see any console players forking out the money in droves for it.
On to my wish list.
The console side is a small fraction of the SOV mechanic
My account I already pay for covers any subscription in the console if it is subscription based.
Plex can be used to buy the console game.
We get a blog giving a lot more details before fanfest to end the sky is falling posts :) (RTS & Eve side would be great)
PS On a side note I think this is a great move and good for the future of Eve and Dust.

They do. Ive used a mouse and keyboard on my PS3 (to navigate the store and set up accounts, etc, never to play a game). Both the PS3 and the X360 have usb ports on the front. The question is can they make games that will work with mouse/keyboard.
I went hunting for a guide to getting it to work with FPS games once upon a time and found a couple, but there was mixed reviews and I never really tried it. +++ "Etiquette is for the Dojo. In war there is only victory or death." - Eiji Yoshikawa |

I got some question about hte ground force in Dust.
1) Can you earn ISK for Killing the enemy as a way to supply your wallet when the equipment your employer give is only standard or sub-standard for the fight? As in you want to buy a better gun from a weapon dealer that on the planet instead of the average gear everyone have.
2) Can the supply from EVE (Marine, Freedom fighter, Kameria, planetary vehicle and high-tech small arms) be use to give a boost the ground force with better equipment against the enemy who does not supply these item?
3) Is there a ranking system, where you can receive most of the cut from the employer for your effort instead of equal share when paid for the mercenaries?
4) If there is a ranking system, do they have access to special gear for the race they are? ex) Amarr: call in for Laser tank, that does hug area damage but slow to charge(maybe). Minmatar: an elite fast-vechile that with speical gun that can knock out the Amarr tank( even anti-air capalbe). Gallente: drone demo-vehicle or air-drop 4-6 ground turret. Caldari:.....no clue, but don't want them to have missile barrage, if so i want that caller to have that beacon on his head....which require him to stand still, let him die for the state..oh and make the barrage to be adjustable (wide and inaccurate for anti-infantry or narrow and devastating for ...blowing up a strong bunker).
5) If there is ranking system and isk earning, are you going to reveal to the enemy who have the highest bounty to represent the enemy MVP?
6) IS there a limit to the amount of respawn to the game to give it a realistic feel...the side that can keep on supplying meat for the grinder will win as to those who lack the body to hold and keep on fighting...which would have EVE fly in suicide to the planet to maintained that supply as it is blockade? Would this also affect the demand for goodies like question #2 in EVE?
7) Can we fly the EVE Frigate in aerial combat in Dust instead of just click and orbit?
8) is there going to be a special bounce for controlling a planet in DUST that will affect EVE.? Ex: free Planetary vehicle or firearm produce daily...even Ship for Eve or just isk earn by the population(eitehr enslaved or liberated) from local tax?
9)IS the battle for the planet is going to be one battlefleid or more as in control for each district. ex: weapon/ship/vehicle factory, spaceport and government capital or even religion( please let this be in....I want to blow up their religious house or burial ground of past Amarr spiritual leader.) This bring another question, do the ground force get any kind of bonus for uncontested district for this random item...like the ruin of a amarr religious building being control by minmatar..where all amarr player on the planet will have weaker moral or body stats and boost the minmatar instead?

At first I was unhappy about this. "WTF" I thought. Well done. New game attracts new players who directly affect a really old world a bunch of us have lived in for quite a while now, and probably a bunch of kids who don't know what's going on and don't care. They just want to run around, clueless as to what impact they are having on the **** we're doing up in space. And on consoles only? Are you kidding me?
Then I got to thinking - ok, well, if this is available for PC, doesn't that threaten to drain the active population of EVE from the void and drop them into the dust? (I'm so ****ing cleaver) It then occurred to me that a PC version of this game wouldn't work at all, because you'd have far too much instability associated with the whole thing. Without the bulk of our community continuing to play EVE (perhaps exclusively in most cases) the purpose of the project defeats itself. So if these pad turners want to secure sov for me and whoever I'm flying with in exchange for some ISK, fine, cool, let's see what happens.
But what continues to irk me is that, rather than expanding my game universe, CCP is developing new material for a title linked to my game (which I really enjoy playing) that, let's face it, I won't have access to. My console is a PS2 and I play Gran Turismo on it. What can I say? I'm an old fart. And I'm an old fart that will be watching the action on the ground from orbit, and there's little more to it than that.

Planet will decide the future. How?
*
Ground warfare on planets will introduce RTS element -> fresh batch of players from RTS side
*
Squad/Company based ground combat -> another fresh batch from FPS community
*
Multi-front intergalactic warfare i.e. Ground/Air/Naval/space combats to fight for a planet, system, constellation, then a whole region... and the whole industry, logistics, and hauling stuff on/under grounds and sea, in air and space.... This will bring EVE to a new level of MMO -> another fresh batch coz EVE will be awesome.

Well - here's what feedback I have thus far:
1) The screenshots look gorgeous
2) The concept is both interesting and exciting.
3) The idea to 'marry' an MMO and a console game is pretty cool.
4) At the end of the day, execution and gameplay will still be what makes or breaks the success of this project. That said - I still vote "Who do I have to sleep with to get in on the public beta?" on Dust514.org.

I like the idea, it is what MMORPGs should be like. A single interconected universe for a family of games.
But a PC and/or MAC version of this game could be the next benchmark game in MMORPG history. I like the concept but for it to be a major success it will need to appeal to the wider MMORPG community and the platform of choice for that genera is the PC/MAC. _______________________________________________________________________ The limits of the possible can only be defined by going beyond them into the impossible. |

Those empire mice will stay mice, since it is almost guaranteed, that fleet action is required in addition to ground battles. Also note, that hiring of mercenaries has been available for a long time now, so actual changes to how things work will propably be less then what people think. Those empire dwellers aren't going to throw away huge sums of isk without a reason and since they don't care about sovereignty that much, why would they waste their hard earned resources on it? They are far more likely to use any spare isk to expand production and improve their position in the competition with other industrialist.
The powers that be will propably be the ones utilizing this new feature more then anyone. They are the ones who care about it, so they are the ones, that will spend the most resources on it.

I am wondering though will planet side combat be in a Instanced environment or will each planet be completly inhabitable, therefore DUST commanders relaying with EVE Alliance leaders be given planet based objectives, so the entire planet is in a perpetual REAL time conflict with both sides attacking and defending outposts around each planet.
The only drawback i can see is that unless clear rules of engagments are underlined straight away, it could take days even weeks, to occupy and claim sovreignty over one planet, resulting in Hundreds even thousands of players fighting on one planet alone, not to mention the time it will take to claim a planet in every system to lay claim to a Constellation let alone a region
And taking into account the number of planets, systems, constellations and regions that are being battled over right now in EVE, that would require millions of players.
Especially if fighting alliances are not only hiring DUST Corps/players to fight, but also to defend their planets as well.
and not forgetting CCP's plans for Planetary flight, when that patch eventually gets released. Will EVE pilots be included into part of that gaming environment by flying down onto a planets surface and helping with bombing runs or dropping off further troops to aid or defend in the conflict on the surface.
Also i would like to know what CCP will be doing to populate these planets, what will the terrain be like, will there be pockets of towns/cities industriral sectors, military outposts and even vast deserts/mineral deposits to fight over
Will each plantary sovrienty claim/fight be set in building evironments only or will players be given the freedom to fight the war their way, example: (Battlefield)
Its a very puzzling proposal that CCP have released about DUST 514, but the reason i ask why not just tell us about their plans in the early stages of DUST 514, its taken them 3 whole years to come to us with a video, i want to know is ......
WHAT ELSE IS CCP HIDING UP THEIR SLEEVES.
One thing that i would like to point out is that most of you who are whining about how DUST will ruin sovreignty control in EVE, but what if CCP make it so Planet side combat is an entegral part of claiming SOV space. If say the FLEET has to destroy a POS and then take over a Non empire station to, are the planets apart of that system too. If CCP deeemed it only neccasary to win a planetary fight to win sovreignty it would remove the entire need for fleet battles altogether. But if you had to win claim to a planet, a POS and a STATION, wouldn't that involve everybody.
Especially if it might takes weeks of endless killing down on the planet giving the fleet enough time to return back to alliance space to regroup and attack again while the battle still rages on, on the planet.
The game also might only be announced for console use at the moment as they are probably trying to design the game from the ground up and want to make it look the dogs *******s off the bat, then maybe in a short term of time releasing a PC/MAC version for all those screaming bloody murder. Wait wasn't EVE released on PC first before MAC to get the ground work done and have a solid test bed! See the irony! |

I would place my self in the "Heroic effort CCP and please don't Feck it up" camp. however here are my two main concerns.
A)I really do wish the new game could be PC as well, but I understand that consoles are where the money is,so im not going to whinge about that here.Your company, your business model. While I do own an Xbox360,I did not keep it online past the 30 day free play I got when I bought it.(Yes I know now that I should have gone for the PS3 for free online, but I didn't.My bad.)So unless I am prepared to fork out 30 bucks AU a month to reconnect my Xbox (which I am very loath to do.) I cant see me getting to kick arse planet side. This is a pity as I love a good FPS,the battlefield series with its well catered for local servers and big local player community kept me in frags and grief for a happy 3 years or more.
B)My second concern (which unless I get past concern one,is rather moot)has to do with my location.I live in Australia which is a country where lag tends to kill all good FPS games unless there are multiple local servers. One of the reasons I didn't continue to keep the Xbox connected was that playing GTA4 became an exercise in frustration as I was continually plonked down in USA and UK servers and suffered repeated lag death until it was no longer funny.
So my real questions are; Will CCP provide enough local servers to make it worthwhile buying the new game as well as renewing my Xbox account? and; Will I be forced to fight players in the UK/USA which will just annoy the hell out of us both as we lag glide around the map firing at where we were 4 seconds ago?
And hey, while you are on the out of left field meta extension kick, how about an EVE based racing game.I would love to see an Atron with go faster racing stripes surrounded by sexy Intaki grid girls.

This could be a very good thing or a very bad thing depending on how the interaction works. Unfortunately, in true ccp style, they have released enough information to make people panic but not enough for people to understand what their intentions are.
Not including a PC version seems odd too, as if they are intentionally limiting their potential added player base.
So long as the responsibility for taking a 0.0 system lies overwhelming in the hands of the eve players I do not see this as being too bad. Start taking that away and a large reason for playing this game goes with it.
Also the meta gaming implications are interesting. Such as accepting a merc mission in dust from one of your eve enemies and then throwing it.

I personally can't wait to help mold a group of bunny-hopping CS kiddies into something that seriously #$@#%s with the best laid plans of space-mice and men.
I also think it's an interesting opportunity for rich empire dwellers and industrialists to screw with things outside of their normal grasp, which is pretty freaking cool. I would kill to see a major alliance get jacked by a financier who has never left Jita...
Wow. A complete noob who is apparently quite happy that CCP has made a move that effectively screws many of their oldest and most dedicated players. How original. How outside-the-box. How thrillingly apathetic.
And I suppose that's exactly how it's going to be - REVENGE OF THE CONSOLE TARDS! Not only did most of EVE's genuine veterans stick with this game for years and years, slowly building up a time-based skillset, maneuvering themselves politically and socially into a place in EVE where they're happy to log in and do their thing with close friends, but also contributed relatively large quantities of RL cash to subs, toon transfers, GTCs and so on - only to be rewarded in the end with CCP resources diverted to a console FPS that encroaches on the existing gameworld that will require little more than an expensive machine, a 12-year-old operator, and a few hours a day to run around PEW PEW PEWing on the surface of some planet.
No really... bra-vo.
And no, there will be no PC version of Dust (unless the population isn't there on consoles) because, as I mentioned, PC Dust will drain players from EVE and we can't have that happening. We need someone left up there to hire the Dusties.

I wonder how CCP will implement jumping, We know that they will not put running into walking in stations because they want to keep a certain "atmospher" and feel to New Eden. Now people in a FPS obviously need to run but will jumping be removed for the jump/climb over obstacles only, maybe an energy bar that will limit jumping/sprinting, or are they just going for the complete halo knock-off and gonna have bunny-hoping kids runing all over the place?

I think what CCP is doing is very clever, keeping all the Peeons on the inch of thier seats, but at the same time allowing them to stew in their own juices of miscontent, CCP has given so much to the community which they have asked for, but now that ccp is slowing the spoon feeding, the children are having spilt milk moments in the forums.
Your getting Walking in stations for goodness sake be pleased.
Releasing it on Console only (for the time being)is a good strategy, because they are trying to limit the amount of people that will migrate from EVE online to DUST therefore not actually helping CCP gain their expected new subscriber numbers in the beginning. If you cant be bothered to help CCP in their effort for World Domination then go back to playing WoW.
Its not like you hear console owners screaming for a EVE-ONLINE for xbox or PS3, its just not feasble. CCP are just appealing to the console stricken FPS generation that enjoy mindless violence and dont like MMO's but would like to have some sort of Real time impact all the same. As most FPS shooters are very linier and completeable. Having a constant Real time quest or mission but in a MMO Style.
how often do you get the chance to be fighting of hordes of mindless amarrian soldiers, but calling up a corp mate asking for a supply of guns to be dropped off who isnt even playing the same game, but linked to you meta style. Its what gaming fraternaty have been seeking for years, CCP could pull it off and if they do successfully, you'll be apart of it, if you dont want to. send me all your cargo and ships and cancel your account. better yet whine enough amd flame CCP and let them do it for you!

The amount that DUST514 affects sovereignty is an easily adjustable mechanic, hell, they probably wont even need to patch DUST for it to work, just change a number somewhere in the database. The real question is, are you willing to give up a little bit of your control if it means CCP can expand Eve's player base, make more money, and ultimately provide better support for both platforms? If no, then I'm sorry, the universe is getting bigger whether you like it or not.

Trivial Statement: If two actors must utilize two different control schemes on a task you cannot effectively compare their relative skill at said task, you can only compare their relative ability to perform said task with said control scheme. A true comparison of skill would require you to compare each person using the same control scheme to perform the task. A person can be equally skilled at a task using either control scheme, however by interacting through a given control they may exhibit greater or lesser ability.
tl;dr version: Lrn2UseabilityEngineer
Quote: secondly.. the 514 idea... its speculation, dumbass!
And I responded to your speculation with opinions on your speculation. To summarize: Generally dumb with a side of uninformed.
Quote: and i dont see u come up with anything better. plus it makes business sense for ccp to get a type of subscription from other avenues.
Better idea: Imposing any sort of added fee on top of XBox's Live Gold Membership will, naturally, decrease your player base significantly. So don't. Once again, trivial statement: People are not going to buy a game for $N, pay $P to play the game monthly, then pay $Q to "feed the arcade machine" when they run out of lives. Variability works for REWARD not for PAYMENT - in other words, random reward will bring people back all the time, random payment will make them go somewhere else.
Quote: thirdly whats above the sky.. ohh! space! u control the space around a planet u control the sky underneath and the planet below that. i ment that comment in terms of a planetary bombardment. so u can have ur 5 men with rocket launchers, cause ill outrange and outgun u everytime.
Useful if you want to hit the city my 5 men are hiding in.
Planetary bombardment comes in two flavors: Strategic and Tactical. In the former you don't target anything you want to capture later because it will be gone. In the latter you need boots on the ground to direct fire. Air superiority is a facet of control, it is not control itself. Final control requires boots on the ground.
Quote: fourthly, ur implying that theirs going to be player generated structures on this planet?
What? lol. No I'm not.
Quote: and about the reference, no i havent read footfall but i understand it was written in the 80's during the cold war about an alien invasion of earth. firstly a hell of a lots changed since the 80's! in the 80's people wouldnt have even thought the processing power of todays computers would even be possible. in the 80's no one gave an eco-activist the time of day, now a would have been president does sell out lectures on just that.
You scratched knowledge and came away sniffing poo.
Any sufficiently advanced race with the ability to travel between solar systems would have developed - out of necessity - relativistic navigation which could be used for targeting masses. Meaning that if they wanted to strategically bombard you they would just pick up a bunch of six mile wide rocks and hurl them at your home planet. All it takes is one such rock to hit an earth sized planet and we're all super dead. Now, take the probability that you can deflect one such rock, let's say 99.9%. Assuming I throw 1000 rocks at you, there's a good chance 1 will make it through. How many such rocks exist out there?
More than enough. |

If the console gamers can be ignored by 0.0 alliances, they will be.
If the console gamers can't be ignored, that will be a radical change that might ruin the game.
Will losing/dying in 0.0 combat on the console game hurt as much as it does in Eve? If there is no grind towards equipment and their death penalty is as laughable as most console games, AND they can influence 0.0 in ways that can't be ignored then you're going to see Goon-style griefing on an unprecedented scale. |

Note to CCP, at FanFest this year you may want to have security screen for pitchforks and torches.
Since CCP used a movie quote from Starship Troopers, "M.I. does the dying. Fleet just does the flying.", to describe the connection between EVE and Dust I will use a TV quote, Galatica; "this has all happened before and will happen again". What I mean by that, yet again, an MMO company shafting it's base for the promise of greener pastures. Using shaft might be a bit strong but what would you call handing a long awaited feature, Planetary Control, to a whole other community? I would not call this an NGE level event but for people to even draw that line should give you pause. Didn't anyone in your design meetings for Dust raise their hand and say, "Ummmm……what about the base PC/Mac users?".
CCP is clearly committed to this project so I will not try to talk you out of it, my humble advice: 1. Explore the viability of PC/Mac client for Dust, quickly, and/or communicate clearly and honestly why this is not probable.
2. Don't assume because your creating an FPS on a console it will be an instant success. It may have some nice numbers for the first 6 months until some new FPS comes along and vaporizes your market.
3. Assume that at some point the longevity of Dust will die off and planetary control will have to accomplished within EVE. In a perfect world, Dust is somehow incorporated into EVE.
4. Please, for once, communicate your ideas about Dust & EVE interaction clearly and involve CSM into your plans.
5. Give us some new information on big projects for EVE Online, WIS status/New Ships/SOV mechanics changes etc. Maybe start dropping some tentative dates instead of the same tired "soon". Time to defuse this bomb you just dropped a bit.
6. Please don't use FanFest this year to endlessly hype Dust. The focus of FanFest really should be EVE Online.
7. Remember WE, that is EVE Online, are your existing cash cow. Maybe someday will be the red headed step child but for NOW we are #1 SON!
8. Most important, if you can't get the interaction between these two games to work without sending everyone here packing then pull back and just create a really fun FPS for the consoles.
Good luck!

Points taken, however:
a) How can you guarantee that the loss of control for EVE players will be "marginal"?
b) How can you be sure that this "expanded player base" will have a positive impact on how this game is played?
c) How can you justify the diversion of CCP resources away from a game enjoyed by entitled '03 douchebags like me and into a game that primarily serves as a revenue/population-booster when they could just as easily have found a way to expand EVE's current environmental offering?
Sorry, but this amounts to little more than a big FU to anyone who doesn't/won't have access to the new title. "Spent literally years of your life improving your lot in the most socially-active free-will mmo enterprise released to date? Well, that's great, but we have a lineup of little kids here willing to pay good money to run around shoosting ****, and frankly that's more beneficial to everyone than us working on building EVE into an even more truly remarkable game."

A)Game Balance - It gets modifed as needed. B)I'm not sure the current player base has a positive effect on this game. C)The game has been in Development for 3yrs now, and we still get Expansions for Eve that many are still able to complain about.

So if DUST players are having too much of an impact on EVE, said impact will be scaled back? Wow, how creative. Diminishing the impact of a new title, thus negating the reason for having it tie into EVE. I'm at a loss for words.
Originally by: VonCruix B)I'm not sure the current player base has a positive effect on this game.
Silly and pointless statement. We're talking about the player base of a new game affecting an old game, not debating whether those of us who have "paid our dues" are worthy of continuing to do so.
Originally by: VonCruix C)The game has been in Development for 3yrs now, and we still get Expansions for Eve that many are still able to complain about.
Non-issue. My point was that EVE itself should have been expanded to allow for planetary ground combat, if indeed that the ultimate goal of DUST was to move the fight in EVE from the stars into the streets.

The only information we have right now, at the very least, is that CCP has taken the profits they have earned (!) and used that to make a console FPS that ties into EVE in a weak manner (by default, it will have to; do you think Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo (I know) would allow such a game to be released that would hook up entirely to EVE? the amount of data being sent back and forth would be scary).
Of course, we could not look at what CCP has done while still having this in production; the constant expansions, the ever-changing game itself, and don't forget the constant and massive server upgrades. But hey, let's ***** about something that is little more than an idea, and an impermanent (and very weakly fleshed out) one at that, that's easy to do.

Please bro, we don't need "constructivists" barging in with this "we have no details" crap. There are plenty of details out there. If you can't be bothered to read them or take part in the discussion about whether this will positively/negatively impact EVE, have a snausage and enjoy the other thread. There is no point in trying to quash debate over this, because it will continue regardless. You'd have about as much luck telling Americans to stop discussing universal healthcare reform as you will telling other EVE players they shouldn't be debating the merits (or lack thereof) of introducing an EVE FPS tie-in.

Dust 514, as far as console gaming is concerned, is destined for failure. Congratulations, CCP, for choosing the most flooded market in the video game world. We're talking about a genre in which good FPSs stay on the shelves because players already have enough top-notch console FPSs. This game should spend a long time in development. You're up against the likes of Call of Duty, Halo, Team Fortress 2, all of which have an irrationally loyal fanbase. Why am I going to put down my AK-47 for your space nerd game? Why would I replace Master Chief with another space marine? It's not that I'm not pulling for CCP, but I hope your plan for EVE takes full account for the complete failure of Dust 514. I mean that with much love.
If I had any constructive criticism. Study your FPSs well. All the cute little RTS mechanics and gameplay whistles in the world won't mean a goddamn thing if the game feels like crap... and that is pretty subjective. Sometimes something as simple as a machine gun appearing like it has no recoil can ruin the entire experience. But why would I be worried? CCP doesn't have a habit of focusing on extras while forgetting about intuitive, smooth, and responsive controls. Oh...
Originally by: Akita T Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't "this gen" consoles have the ability to use a mouse and/or keyboard if you really wanted to ?
Yes but most FPS's don't support it. They don't support it because it creates an unfair advantage. It's usually for web browsing and such.

LOL, awesome = )
Picking XBOX, and consoles was actually a very good idea. There are a TON of us who game on the XBOX. FPS flooded? Bull crap. Last night there were over 100,000 players online in COD4. There were over 200,000 more in COD World at War. The console gaming market is growing. It is nearly recession proof. The community experience improves every few months, and the experience on Live is better than nearly anything we have seen.
Console games can be expanded (how about 3 map packs already for COD WAW), they can be updated and patched (2 updates last year for NHL09), the items in game can be updated, and the games can even be run from the console with no disk. Online portions of the game can be updated at ANY time.
Letting players be introduced to Eve through Dust will increase the Eve player base which is a win for everyone.
Plus I love the idea of being able to hire armies to take or hold a planet. Quite honestly, mixing the PC and Console experience is one of the coolest things I have heard in a long time.
It could fail, and Eve will go on and continue to prosper. Or it will introduce a whole new world and a whole new market to MMO's.
Its great that a company like CCP has the vision to try something like this.

The mods moved it here so there would be room on the gd for the inevitable patch day whinges. Just take a quick galce at the gd and you will see what I mean. Also if you notice they took away the sticky in the gd about only using oope to discuss dust and have left several active dust topics unlocked and unmoved.

Hmmm, it takes one to know one? I'm not making the rules here, they are. Just quoting them. You're right about it being their forums and their rules. If they want to set the precedent by not following them, more power to them.
It just encourages others not to, as well. The precedent is what sets scene for the next person who performs the same action. For instance, insulting someone over the internet and telling them that they should discontinue voicing their opinions on a forum.

I had forgotten about that scene at the end of the vid. I had orginally thought it was from another game, not by CCP.

Dust is influencing EVE in minimal way. Result : 0.0 people just ignore dust whatsoever.
Dust is influencing EVE in a way that actually matters to the 0.0 people. Result : Recruitment message of 0.0 alliance "Ventrillo and Xbox mandatory".
For the sake of EVE lets hope the situation one will happen.

sorry cross posted - but this seems to be the place to comment & didn't see it util afterwards...
I know some people will disagree with me but personally I think CCP have done a pretty good job with EVE since I first played in 2003, I have had a few sabbaticals but every time I have returned the game has got better & so much more complex. I remember the 10k players online milestone & we were all amazed :)
The one thing that seems clear to me is that CCP do care about their game, they also care enough about the players to involve them far more than any other game maker out there - fanfest, the player council, massive forums, ISD etc... etc... sure they make mistakes sometimes - who doesn't?
WOW players still have to choose which server they are going to play on & 2nd Life has no purpose other than advertising. CCP is unique in its original vision & continuing dedication to EVE.
The idea for DUST is typically ambitious, and the current details too light to really be able to make any judgement on how it will turn out, but EVE-online has always grown by increments.
My own feeling is that the console decision is a way to introduce thousands of new players to the universe of Eve. In addition the FPS planet concept is a stepping stone on CCP's continued path to the world's most complex, comprehensive and immersive virtual universe in existence. The possibilities for the future are legion & very exciting
As for all the premature complaints - some responses...
The servers are hardware agnostic - it doesn't matter if the data is coming from a PS3, XBox, pc, or mobile phone.
All my gaming friends are around my age (40+) and all have a PC (or more) and either a PS3, Xb360 or both.
The hardware in the current consoles has not been fully utilised by any existing game yet - perhaps GT-5 might come close (if it is ever released!) but from history more likely GT6 in 10 years time :p
Releasing DUST for the console in no way prevents it from being released for the PC or incorporated into EVE at some future date (perhaps once the fickle consolers have moved on)
Like EVE the initial idea for DUST is just that, it will change over time, become more complex and all players in the EVE universe will have the opportunity to express their delight or despair about the announced direction.
I can't count the ragequits that have been expressed at modifications to the game in the past and yet the player base has just continued to grow.
I am happy to wait and see but if anyone can pull off an epic idea that no one else has achieved I think CCP are currently the most likely candidates to make it succeed.
Message ends.... |

I like the idea. I think it's just mainly the "PC's are superior" crowd that are crying over it at the moment.
Means PC nerds who have never played consoles before might have to accept that there are other viable platforms, and deal with new people. (And the majority aren't <18 year olds, the whiners just shout this.) FPS on consoles work well, a few hundred thousand people playing FPS games every night that are a few years old can't be too wrong.
Even if DUST can't keep up with COD/Halo etc, I'm pretty sure there are ALOT of people who play EVE with both a PC and an Xbox/PS3, meaning there will always be groups of people available to hire. The RTS style will definitely keep people playing. Big alliances who require alot of planetary warefare could keep a regular DUST squad recruited from consoles/current alliance easily.

The idea is pretty forward thinking but perhaps just routine for the folks at CCP. DUST 514 appears to be a means of weaning teens away from their consoles and graduating them to the world of Eve Online. Eventually those DUST players will look to their employers-in-the sky and desire to fly side by side with them... leaving their fellow grunts behind. The next generation of Eve Online pod pilots will have been groomed. That's some pretty smart thinking, CCP.
Once the DUST 514 console market is all tapped out, then perhaps PC and Mac versions will be released. It will be interesting to see how (or if) skills and characters transfer between the two games.
The idea of pod pilots taking an occasional break from space to trudge planet side sounds appealing. Yet, like others, I have no desire for crappy console graphics on my x86_64 based system and I've no interest in purchasing a technologically restrictive and obsolete console just to try DUST 514. I'm sure Wwise will work great though for the new title.

A glimmer of hope: I showed the DUST 514 news to someone who doesn't care for EVE at all and prefers consoles and he said it sounds like a sweet idea. Looks like if Battlefield is still one of the most popular games, a bigger Planetside-scope game stands a fighting chance. I have a slight change of heart, still worried.
To EVE-living neckbeards:
1) Having a semblance of hand-eye coordination and reflexes does not make one a "12-year old", and you don't have to practice FPSs to become proficient nearly as long as you have to study EVE to become proficient. So that tosses out the whole "we're adults with responsibilities" theory.
2) So far they've only said that DUST will influence sovereignty. God forbid they introduce a level of interaction that you can't circumvent by creating an ISK-funded ALT. You might actually have to work on basic leadership skills. The horror!
3) It's not an expansion. It's not unfair. If you don't care for consoles, as far as you are concerned, they're adding marines to sovereignty mechanics with really good AI.
4) Stop jumping to conclusions about minimal information. No one said DUST players can single-handedly steal your system. Yet.
5) You should be less worried about what DUST players will do and more worried about having DUST players at all. Wouldn't it be cute if the EVE playerbase got scared, sabotaged DUST, and CCP went bankrupt and shut down EVE? I would laugh. _ |

I'm really concerned about the willingness of console FPS players in participating in sovereignty warfare. I mean, how is this going to work? Example: I come home from school/work, fire up my PS3 and start playing Dust. Now what? Can i start shooting straight away? Or do i have to wait on some distant space alliance to claim space first? How long do these battles last? Usually FPS game rounds last about 20 minutes, but that seems rather short for this concept. So, it will have to last longer, hours? a day?
What if no planets are being contested? Where will we fight then?
oh and the biggest question of all. Can i make EVE ISK by playing Dust? Cuz i really dont care about sov.
So many questions :P

The alliances have been around for some time - wether missions will be purely attack/defend, or if they'll be required to obtain resources for the 0.0 alliance (the mercs are being paid to be there anyway) is of course unknown - however I don't feel you should worry about not having something to fight.
This will be a pvp console game not empire wars in eve.

Actually, it is very much an expansion. They're adding content to and expanding on the options available to an existing game world. That pretty much defines the term expansion.
It's on a different platform, it's a game in and of it's own right, and it's a completely different style of play. However, the moment the two affect each other in any way, it becomes an expansion.
I don't think this will be console exclusive. The only major barrier is the control difference which CAN be mitigated. The PC guys will have to make all the sacrifices most likely, but it can, and has, been done. It's a far better option than neglecting the home platform of the original product.
Fanfest will be an interesting one this year, regardless.

If the news at fanfest doesn't delight I fear for the crazy icelanders at CCP and the place they're holding it at.
If it's not good news, awe inspiring, jaw droppingly brilliant with extra hot-sauce announcements, then the next fan fest may be held at a different location, in a smaller venue E3 like :D, to journalists and invited guests only.
Hee hee.
Seriously I hope the release a few more tidbits before that date November (for the gaming community and FANS! in particular) is a very long time to wait indeed.

The 1st through 3rd of October this year, not November, so it's about 6 weeks away, so it's not that long. But to let the current rumours simmer that long has the potential to do a lot of damage.

I'm sure CCP wouldn't have spent the last three years working on an xbox title without a deal in place which allows them AND M$ the best of both worlds.
If the MMO-PVP title called DUST doesn't have a monthly subscription I'll be annoyed if there's such things as character progression and advancement, although in what format it will take place, if any, I have no idea.
Will it be twitch play ala Unreal Tournament with no character advancements, just a status page per character - kills/losses missions won/lost contracts accepted/rejected.
I really thought the fan fest was in November though so that's four weeks earlier, still a long long time off.

Very true! Although, think of the way off-line games work? Fable 1/2 for instance. You can progress your character through save data locally, maybe this is how there going to do it.
I know we cant say until we know officialy. Just all the speculation, people are bound to think of way it could work. If saved data is then uploaded to the Eve server when you play the game its just like playing any Multilayer game, the only MMO aspect of it would be interacting with a cross platform server.
To be honest, I dout there is really anyway a console MMO could actually become an MMO.
Anyway I'm no expert, I just like to think of way things could be done. Emm?"Cant touch this" den der der dum, der dum der dum KILLING THE BUG'S, BEFORE THEY KILL YOU |

Sadly that would just make players reset their machine half way through while on the losing side and we can't have that now can we!
I believe CCP will/have pulled off a major deal with Sony and MS that allows them to run their own servers for Dust. Of course it wouldn't have come cheap, but then again both platforms make money ONLY on the games that are sold and not on the hardware, subscriptions are too small to warrant measurement in the grand scheme of things. Perhaps the pricing structure of Dust will include a monthly bill (as per pc mmo's) but the trade off will be free updates.
Speculation is fun.

Just an idea.
Since DUST will be "one" of the things that determine if you have Sov in a system.
How about, if you have Sov and control the majority of the Planets, you get a better eff on your towers in regard to fuel usage. If you don't control the majority of your planets, it costs you more to fuel them.
Maybe make it so it is worth controling all the planets, or taking one away from the current Sov holder.
Controlling the Planets help make things easier, but not required. Kind of like having large insurgent forces or out right rebellions on the planets in your system.

Im excited about this aswell and i think it can only enrich the game.
Even more after watching this trailer at 4:54 i've noticed a fitting screen of a galente ground vehicle - this is may be the most important moment of the whole video because you can see that it has fitting screen similar to spaceship - with different specifications, high, medium and low slots. This means specialized modules for the dust infantry, different setups, strategies based around, industry and logistic involvement.
I think Dust will bring more players to EvE and can make the game only better. I'll not mind to jump in the landing shuttle and join the dust infantry if bored by "point and click" space pvp aswell.
The only thing i can wish is release for PC too, but im sure it will come sooner or later.

Quote:
the following is my personal views on how this should work, which is based on nothing then mear speculation but...
I think it should work like this...
Atm sov works like this: you have the most moons you get the system..
when dust comes out it should (i think) work like this: once you have the most moons around a planet then you get to invade using any ship that can use a clone vat bay these would work as the mobile station used to invade from)
Basically you use Cosmos to contract a dust team to invade and they jump clone to the ship and use that as a base of operations... if the ship is destroyed in game (eve) then the dusters cant get re-inforcements and then loose the fight for the planet. (unless a new ship arrives that can setup a clone vat bay) Each planet is broken into atleast 20 areas that need to be conqured.. lets make it 21 that way there will always be a majority sov holder of the planet.
Once you have the majority of planets then you get to make a modular pos (battlestation) around set planet. this battlestation will serve as the key to holding sov over the system. (only one battlestation per system)
So basically most of the sov will be based in Eve... Only the controll of the planet will be based in Dust and that is totally dependant on how well the Eve-online alliance is able to keep thier moms' in orbit to resupply the dusters...
oh and the best thing about the battlestation is that it has a clone vat bay so the defending alliance always is able to call in re-inforcemtns... that way its a bit harder to take over a system :)
i like this idea

Console-based. BAAAH
PC FTW. Sad the rumours werent true about it being on pc. Everytime a game ports over from consoles. It almost always blows chunks.
I also suspect the communications like voice or text wont be interchangable; so I cant be in my thanatos talking with gamers. The level of interaction I suspect will be kinda like... battlefield in a sense. You die. You respawn. You then win say a planet or wanna go somewhere else. Someone in eve has to be the one who moves you.
Probably be what gets Fail Warfare into highsec. ------------------------ To make a megathron from scratch, you must first invent the eve universe. ------------------------ Life sucks and then you get podded. |

The idea is great right up until you get to the part about it affecting sov?!?!?
Why the **** would i want a console based FPS to affect the game i do play. Did you ever consider that some of us dont like FPS's all that much and that is indeed why we play eve in the first place. I do occasionaly play BattleField 2142 and that is fun for all of about 10 minutes, at that point BF2142 gets ALT+F4'd and i load up eve again.
If for example you want the game to affect eve sov, then create a new area for that to happen in, similar to what you did with the wormhole systems. However when you have spent time with your corp / alliance building your forces/skills and ships for in many cases year, to then have some console bunny come in and have their say in your universe is just EPIC FAIL.
Please dont make the mistake of thinking you can change things to this level and people will just "put up with it" Sony thought they could do that with SWG and that died pretty quickly.
Eve is a game of dedication, if ur toon is less than 6months old then youve only just started playing this game, unlike on a console where after 6 months youve played the game 3 times over in every different difficulty setting and are looking at trading it in.
Also if your gonna make a FPS game to affect eve it *MUST* be PC based *FIRST* with a port to console either being done after the fact or released at the same time, otherwise if the game affects normal sov and is console based your asking your quater of a million subscribers to go out and spend upwards of ú160 each. If that is the case then your asking the players of eve to shell out about 40 million which in eve is nothing but i doubt CCP is worth 40million GBP as a company period.
DONT **** WITH OUR GAME - Expand and improve but dont mess with tried and tested mechanics otherwise your just gonna fail like SWG and most of us have invested way to much real life time and money to let you succeed in s*rewing our game

Just chipping in my 2 cents ...
I watched the two videos on you tube
Game looks interesting but ... you can't tell much from a 30 second trailer.
I've played Planetside off and on for over six years so I've enjoyed playing that type of game.
The big things I liked about Planetside were - it's scale (at one time ... 450 players in an arena) - and the fact that what you did stayed that way until some other player came along and undid it.
That is one of the things that is appealing about EVE - is it's scale and persistence.
Now there are problems with this. One of the problems with PS, as it's user base shrank, was that you had a lot more arena's than were in use.
In a game that has thousands of solar systems, each with multiple planets ... you're going to have to have some method for controlling the battles so that there are more than two guys there at a time. One planet is more than capable of absorbing your entire user base.
Another problem - is that if you get a lop sided population distribution you end up with one side winning and the others unable to do anything about it - which isn't a good thing.
In WWII Online - they had campaigns where they fought until one side won and then just started the game over. I don't see that meshing well with EVE. But you need to have some mechanism that keeps one side from winning decisively and effectively ending the war.
Now as to Consoles ... you've got some people I'm sure who have consoles and pc's but you have a lot of people who aren't going to go out and buy a console just to play this game. So, unless you port it to the PC later on down the road you won't have a lot of your current user base playing that game. Which may be a good thing as it could be a problem if to many people suddenly left EVE for Dust.
Anyway ... *shrug* it's all way to early to tell.
One thing I noted in the video where the explanation of the Alliance system was being explained was that you had two headings. One said "Fleet" and the other said "Infantry". Infantry are foot soldiers which are but one element of a planetary force. You also have Artillery, Armor and Aviation, not to mention the potential for actual water borne Naval vessels.
A "Fleet" is a group of ships. Here you have used the term correctly.
Infantry is a category. Here you have used the term incorrectly - unless - there aren't going to be anything else but Infantry in the game. If that is the case ... you have a flawed game.

NOTE: I am using the term ôDustiesö to refer to DUST 514 players, to distinguish them from EVE players. I see there being two "theaters" of warfare in DUST 514 - factional warfare and 0.0.
In factional warfare, Dusties will fight not only other Dusties, but NPC soldiers. Yes, taking a planet will be a lot easier if the other side doesnÆt get their own Dusties on the ground, but it wonÆt be a total pushover. In 0.0, Dusties will be the only troops involved on the ground. They will seek each other out the way capsuleers do in space. ____________________________________ Caldari by birth, Minmatar by citizenship.

from what i have read here is that people are maily upset that they wont have final say over who owns the system due to the dusters...
that would upset me too at first...
but then i thought about how when an enemy is able to invade a planet... they can only do this if they own the majority of the pos's around the planet... so if you lost the pos's then without dust514 you also automaticaly loose the planet... but with dusters it gives you the ability to defend the planet with dusters and perhaps time needed to gather more forces to take out the pos's...
Remember there is going to be some sort of modular pos (battlestation) that will act for Sov of the system.
ccp will mostlikely introduce the new sov system with planet sov leading to system sov....
so in a system with 11 planets you own 6 planets (which could involve dozens of moons) you can make a battlestation then you get sov... this battlestation can also be destroyed once you have lost the majority of planets then the bad guys can attact the battlestation...
perhaps said battlestaion could be upgraded with better sov level...

Yay! more ammo/time dump as if there isn't enough already.
Hopefully it'll be more intelligent than a 51% control of resources dictating who gets sov.

Console-only is pretty lame. There's a large market of PC gamers that don't own consoles, and are certainly not going to buy one just for one game. Besides - if the game is being developed for the XBOX, then how much more work can there possibly be to port it over to the PC? Honestly?
I am disappointed. I'll survive, but I'm disappointed. I was getting excited for a while, but now there is zero reason for me to care about Dust.

I've been playing some CoD lately to get back in the feel for FPS and man are there some fraghags on there that will do anything to get a kill in even if it ruins overall gameplay.
What features will DUST include? If at all anything resembling artillery please make it once every 3-5 minutes or something.
I had constant doomsdays going off, zero visibility and aim, massive lag and with a feature like this in the game will flounder in the long haul to anyone but the most persistent hags.
Really, if you haven't already you should present the features to get some feedback on them, if only to steer clear of the worst pitfalls. Pitfalls that could easily be avoided by someone outside the box looking in and pointing them out.
For example, not a FPS but an MMO but AoC went live with full PvP servers with static spawns, what were they thinking?

When there is cod 1,2,3,4,5, cod 19 on "Deaths Door". And all the rest. How will ccp keep the six year olds playing when there is new bigger things coming along. And what about the next xbox and next ps will they bring out a new version of the game took take full use of the new hardware.

Because only 6 year olds with small attention spans play consoles.

It could be for gun/vehicle/MCC module research as well. Being able to choose from a list of rigs/upgrades for the MCC that have been researched by the players on your team would be interesting. Shared research would be a good reason to have corporations.
I wonder if we'd be able to purchase more bots to help defend/attack the planets with. I hope there's enough DUSTers to go around. I hope there won't be some major gameplay issue which suddenly makes Sovereignty unable to change hands or something. So much can go wrong and make both EVE and DUST completely bomb.
Is there a DUST514 ideas, gameplay and QA thread?

I just watched the trailer. It didn't give much idea of the gameplay but the settings look right for an eve-related game. Other than that it looks like your standard puppymill FPS based on halo but with brilliant CCP looks that won't come thru on a TV set....
So this "360" thing that someone told me it's built for... is this the only machine that will play this? and if so... do those hook up to a propper computer monitor? I don't have a qualified TV set because computers do it better... and without commercials.
PS: what is a 360? is that a nintendo or what? ..... Atari? Sounds like quite a bit of money that would require spending to play one game that looks like halo
...Did I mention it looks like halo? Really, it does... the similarities are uncanny. I think they ripped off halo... I mean... it was made in china... home of the ripped off product.
It's unfortunate that you may need one of these "360" devices to play halo514 but it does sound like a decent 'approved splitter' thing for slow nights.
So who out there has a "514" device to play this newfangled halo360?

Right, my last post was somewhat in charactor... showing how a PC gamer lifestyle does not have so many ties to a console lifestyle. Since I posted that I've become increasingly enraged though. I've played eve for 5 or so years and find I have to **** around with other games to relieve bordom now and then. This dust game sounds like just what I'm looking for. It's eve related and won't grow frowns among my buddies and would actualy bring flavor and revitalized ferver for eve in general. But HOLY SHTI! It can't be played on a PC... I've got no farking TV set, no Farking console device... and the CCP marketing department has proven themselves unworthy of a paycheck in my opinion... I'll pay for another EVE game.. I've been paying for several games since I've signed on several accounts with EVE and will be happy to get another EVE-related game to freshen it up a bit. The expansions for EVE? whatever... A new EVE related game that looks like Halo? ok, let me play. Don't be an ******* thinking that you'll loose customers for EVE because you have a new game. If you were going to loose someone to another game, believe me, they already left. You haven't come up with anything exciting since I've started playing in '04. I'll get a new game of a different genre that effects my EVE game in a heartbeat just because that would be the first actual new thing to happen beyond a trivial tweak. ****ing port this **** now to PC or further degrade standing opinion of your exsisting player base.

PS3 will be were its at for dust514 as its actually usable as more than a simple gaming console. If you like idea of cruising the web and watching bluray dvds from netflix from your comfy livingroom couch then mosey on down to your local electronics superstore and pick up one of the ps3 slims for $299 and a cheap 32" 1080p 2.7ms 120hz lcd tv seeing as they are just as good as a pc panel because they litteraly are pc panels that have extra inputs and circutry for displaying normal video devices. I have a very nice lg hdtv in my livingroom similar to the one I linked only much bigger with a bit better refresh at 2ms that has a ps3 with a cheap wireless keyboard and mouse hooked up to it that I use to browse the web and play bluray movies I rent. Hell I'm posting from the couch right now. :P Also never bought any games for it past some simple arcade shooting games from the online sony store so dust514 will be the first real game to grace its hard drive.

I have questions:
Will users playing Dust 514 on the 360, the PS3, and possibly the PC be able to communicate with Eve Voice?
Can we all play together across the board for the 360, PS3, and "possibly" the PC?
How will players communicate to Eve players?
Will keyboards be supported on the PS3 ?

Please release more info soon (without the TM).
EDIT: Also I am interested to se how you go about "evolving" this over time on the XBOX. Considering that microsoft doesnt allow for free game expansions with thier service will you
A) not charge a subscripton fee but charge for updates and expansions instead? B) not use the live service but somehow have the xbox connect strait to your servers (if that's even possible)? C) just not add on to it (highly unlikely as this goes against everything we know about CCP) D) No plan about this and will just let DUST 514 fade out over time being replaced by a PC version with more flexibilaty and potential.
I get free expansions for a lot of games I have for 360, wth are you talking about? The only cost is the sub to xbox live, which you can get a card for at retailers for aroun $50 ( got mine for less on e-bay).

What is the risk for CCP? How much of the development cost for Dust is on credit? If Dust flops, will the burden for paying off the debt be put on EVE subscribers?
I think I am one of the few that thinks the video looks like crap. Everyone else seemed to cream their pants. Seriously, it looks like Halo with EVE's bland textures and dull, muted color schemes. There are already games where your character progresses and earns access to new weapons. There are already games where you can modify your weapons. I am not sure what you're offering that sets it apart from other FPSes, other than the connection to EVE.
As another poster pointed out, forced online play on a console is guaranteeing failure. The only FPS that successfully did this was America's Army, and that was only successful on PCs, it was totally free, was developed with government money as part of the general recruitment budget. (Their goal wasn't to make money, but to encourage players to join the actual army, just like recruitment advertisements.) Planetside was a hit at first, but it eventually declined. Also the reason it was initially a hit was because it offered epic, huge battles, something Dust seems to put a cap on.
Seriously, I can't think of purely-online, purely-pvp game that succeeded unless it was free to play. Is Dust 514 going to be a free download? Is that why they are going with the micro-transaction model? As a console owner, I can't imagine buying this ( ok, I probably will, but only because I am an EVE fan), when I am forced to play online with strangers, with no pve. What if the time of day available to me, there aren't many players online? I prefer to only play with my RL friends on Xbox Live. There are way too many immature players and weirdos I encountered when I was playing Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 (A game I love). No PvE = No Dust.

Meh, Dust does not appeal to me, but neither does any munted console FPS.
CCP know their ****, they are just reaching out for an alternate market base.
It's a hell of alot better than changing eve so it becomes more "accessible". For this they earn a great deal of respect from me (at the very least).
All those people who feel betrayed by DUST not being for PC, either havn't thought it through, or are, ummm, in the lower percentile.

Edited by: Sojourner Melakah on 15/11/2009 23:55:46 eh.... all the whining around here reminds me of a nursery full of a bunch of weened infants. annoying as hell so I don't blame ccp for not posting any responses...
Anyways, I think this dust idea has alot of potential.
What I would definately like to see is *more* integration between Dust and Eve. I realize that it's probably unrealistic to expect integration to go so far as eve players flying in planetary orbit along with dust players, etc, but I think that at least Eve players should have a hand in Dust politics. For example, perhaps Dust corporations could be owned and managed by Eve players...
Also, I think that Eve players need to be rewarded for their loyalty in this venture. Granted, there will always be those who ***** and moan no matter what, but Dust should somehow be something rewarding to those Eve players who are willing to accept the change so that they won't feel like their expensive subscription fees are just to feed some other community to boost ccp's sales.
Bottom line is... this is definately an opportunity for CCP to make something great... let's hope they don't settle for something less.

The problem in China is - no one there is legally allowed to even play on the networks (except SAR's). Its only possible with modded consoles, and then, the consoles can get banned. Ubisoft burned out on Endgame. How is CCP going to overcome what Ubisoft could not do with its vast resources? I imagine studios get some sort of permission and set limitations, but - the entire staff of employees is cut off from network play when they go home.

PC will be realised by ccp for the simple reason that the console market is crowded and the vast majority of eve players will simply being on PC baulk at having to buy a console when they play eve. They will want to simply log out of one game and into another on their PC.
CCP need a PC version of dust 514 to leverage off at realise and then hope it grows thro word of mouth otherwise it will start off ok with the console crowd who are usually fickle who will get bored of it then it will only really be the eve players themselves who will maybe play or if ccp has a pc version they can leverage off 600000 subscirbers potentially who can simply even run eve and dust 514 on their PCs at the same time.
Wait aned see ccp has the trademark to dust 514 and they also have built it on the unreal 3 game engine which .... runs on u guessed it PC
If i get a email with dust 514 going live saying from ccp look at this isnt it pretty please sign up as they do on their mailing list to promo new expansions and get back old players who unsubscribe. and its not on PC im going to mail it back and go hahaha not a chance get it on PC and ill sign up to both Signature - CCP what this game needs is more variance in PVE aspects and a little bit less PVP focus, more content more varied level 1-4 missions more than just 10 per faction high sec low sec and 00 |

going to bump this up a bit to keep it on our minds , ccp perhaps might give us some indication say every fortnight on some dev blogs on dust 514 and progress just to stir up some interest.
Their version at fanfest had the look of being along, the commander overview map was the weak point, the war point system under explained. Im guessing that the ground combat bit is probably nearly ready. Which indicates to me that 3 years in development may give us a closer timeframe than the 18 months mooted at fanfest Signature - CCP what this game needs is more variance in PVE aspects and a little bit less PVP focus, more content more varied level 1-4 missions more than just 10 per faction high sec low sec and 00 |

PC players are not denied anything. If you go to the store to buy a 360 and Dust then the clerk wont deny you the game. If you limit your gaming to one platform then thats your own fault. Caveo of Minmatar , torva vacuus regimen of deus es plurrimi periculosus of bestia

Yes, yes you should.

They don't need luck, just flashy advertisements. Modern Warfare 2 proved that.

One thing i want to know Is this a pure arena death match like unreal tourney, or will there be things to do between matches, I'd hate to see it be one of those games that has you spend 90% of your time in a lobby waiting for a fame.

Watched the trailer, looks very bland. Unless it becomes much better enough to stand out, it will never make it in the current FPS market, which is flooded by quality FPS games.

Bring it on I say, multiplatform gaming is the way to go. I got both the 360 and PS3 so im well looking forward to this arriving. This is why I got back into EVE. Having mates on either console slugging it out on the ground while im in orbit slugging it out with another fleet does sound very awesome. I just hope they pull this off and well cause this could be the next benchmark in online gaming.
Think about it, the fanboi's on all platforms that ramble on about how PS3/360/PC is crap for whatever reason all stuck on the one game on the one server actually given the tools to take out their rabbid fanboi-ism against each other for having the "wrong" platform sounds like its going to really stir up a sh*t storm in New Eden when all three go head 2 head.
If Dust 514 doesnt come out on PC, its no real skin off my nose so im not bothered but if Duster's warbarges start cropping up in EVE moving planet to planet (I would hope so and that they dont just "appear" on a planet), the PC owers that are miffed about missing out on EVE due to not having a console will no doubt start actively hunting them, which will no doubt have Dusters looking to drag in EVE mercs or corps to fly cover for them.

Its really personal pref as to how you want to play them I guess. Whats right for you in your playstyle might seem complicated to others. Some folks out there just cannot take to a mouse and keyboard setup. I know some folks that are on the 360 just cannot take to a PS3 pad for example too. (Why I have no idea, apart from the left stick and D-Pad flipped around they are pretty much one and the same).
You could take your stand point on the idea and flip it on its head. I.e. console owners *****ing that EVE will never be out on their systems and why they have to fork out a small forune for a PC to get on EVE. FPS's are very very big on consoles so its only natural to bring an EVE FPS to the masses and much larger gaming audience.
I dont see the harm in keeping DUST and EVE on seperate systems myself but thats for the masses to decide if a MW2 server campain kicked off to bring Dust to the PC market as well, then I would be very surprised if CCP just ignored the cries and carryed on.
But also in the same token, if PC owners became Dusters as well, then there is a large chance that the console Dusters would be shunned by their PC counterparts and just left to fend for themselves. Which with their only means of getting around in New Eden being the Warbarge without some help from Eve'rs would be like leading Lambs to the slaughter the second they step of a planet.

Sure, but in this case I just can't see it. Sports games, platform games etc by all means, a controller is superior. For moving around in a FPS I can agree that a controller is pretty nice, but for aiming??!? There's just no way to aim anywhere near as quickly or accurately with a stick as with a mouse. There just isn't.
If you've never played a shooter with a decent mouse, then I guess a controller could feel pretty good. And it's cheaper to get a console than to keep upgrading your PC to keep up with the latest shooters. So for those reasons I do in a way get why they are big. I've played plenty of console shooters with my friends, so I've learned to tolerate it somewhat and even gotten quite good, but the poor aiming just kills me (Literally and figuratively) every time. To someone used to PC shooters it feels like a poor imitation.
I'm not clamouring for it to be PC-only or to even be released on the PC, as I probably wouldn't get it either way as I'm a laptop user without the finances to keep upgrading so I can play newer FPS games. So I'm not "*****ing".

Correct, this is also why pads are next to useless for console based RTS's as well. I just wish they would give up in trying to make people use those things for the command and conquers etc. Its like trying to play any other RTS game but with one hand behind your back and three fingers broken in your free hand. The analogue stick is just fffarrrr to damn fiddly to get a quick pin point precise click, esp when things are hitting the fan and you need to quickly mobilise the correct units into place.
Its also true in FPS's but thats why they program in a very basic auto aim into every game too. Ok you still need to get near to your target but once its on it, it will "lock" to what your aiming at. I.e. if your round at your mates thats got a 360 or PS3, stick COD4 on and look down the barrel of what ever gun and get your mate to walk in front of where your aiming in game, you will see your aim slightly "tug" to track your mate as he moves. CCP will no doubt have something like this in Dust too.
As for a mouse, I got a Sidewinder here that I use when on Steam and EVE, does the job great guns, 2000dpi is a bit hard to get used too though but for 180'ing if something is behind yah and sniping etc it wins hands down over a pad. Again im neither up nor down about it in FPS's. But on likes of XBL or PSN where everyone is using the same interface, everyone is on the same level playing field. So its really 6 and half a dozen at the end of the day. Peeps on the consoles could argue the case that because your using superior hardware such as a ú80 gaming mouse with 4000dpi your trying to get an advantage in game with superior hardware, just as PC gamers can argue there is less skill involved with console FPS's having an auto aim to compensate and work with a pad.
Every control has its ups and downs, same with every system. Its just all down to where your tastes lie at the end of the day.

Posted from a re-directed thread....
I'm more concerned about the drain on CCP resources that will take away from Eve development. If not actual Eve staff members then at least upper management will have their attention spans split between the two efforts. Neither is good for Eve if they occur. Plus the crappy economy in Iceland further complicates their personal lives in general. I see dust as just a distraction for the owners/managers of CCP. If they lose money, or need more development funds as they build that console game, guess who's on the hook.....all of us in subscription increases.
Too many good gaming companies have gone down this path before and failed. They do one thing great and then decide to expand their business by venturing into new arena's. My advice to CCP is not lose your focus on a console game and stick with what you do well, a PC based MMO. Once upper management divides their attention away from Eve, CCP will begin to decline and Eve will get less attention and resources.
Keep building Eve as a MMO with new content, constant updates and more ways for people to play the game and you will increase CCP's profits. I just don't see CCP making a hit out of another FPS in a very crowded FPS market. It can't be good for Eve and all of us....
