As of a few minutes ago the patch page on the web has been updated to serve some patch files.
The last TQ version was 94178. This page http://www.eveonline.com/patches/patches.asp?s=&system=mac now lists versions 94178, 98907 and 98960.
Selecting the latest TQ version (94178) you go to http://www.eveonline.com/patches/patches.asp?s=&system=mac&edition=&n=94168 and that leads to downloading a patchfile called evepremiumpatch94168-99186-mac.tgz
That files DOES NOT work and using it may lead to a corrupted installation.
Here are (filtered from the logs) the SHA1 checksums that fail if that patch is applied to the latest 94168 installation (used yesterday to connetc to TQ): Examining File : /Contents/Resources/Czech.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error Examining File : /Contents/Resources/Danish.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error Examining File : /Contents/Resources/Dutch.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error Examining File : /Contents/Resources/Finnish.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error Examining File : /Contents/Resources/French.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error Examining File : /Contents/Resources/German.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error Examining File : /Contents/Resources/Greek.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error Examining File : /Contents/Resources/Hungarian.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error Examining File : /Contents/Resources/Italian.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error Examining File : /Contents/Resources/Norwegian.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error Examining File : /Contents/Resources/Polish.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error Examining File : /Contents/Resources/Portuguese.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error Examining File : /Contents/Resources/pt_BR.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error Examining File : /Contents/Resources/Russian.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error Examining File : /Contents/Resources/Spanish.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error Examining File : /Contents/Resources/Swedish.lproj/MainMenu.nib/keyedobjects.nib -> SHA1 Error

Interestingly those files have not been changed by the patch. AFAIK the patch is supposed to update cider too. I guess they just forgot to do it as it seems cider was not patched (but I haven't yet checked all of the cider files yet).
Also I'm thinking the post-patch client may actually work (in an old cider, new client way). But I cannot test it now. |

They may (or may not) fix the patch so that it works from the TQ client we used yesterday. But I do not think they can do anything if you applied the broken patch and you do not have a backup copy of the pre-patch client. |

Performing a pre-flight check so that the patch does not apply itself if the conditions are not met. Then doing a transactional patch (that is: keep backups of all files the patch is going to modify and embed a rollback routine). There are several things CCP could do. Nothing WE can do (except backing up frequently). |

As for the OP: - Manual patching - 94178 (that is most probably the same for all as that was what we needed for TQ in the last 2 months) - evepremiumpatch94168-99186-mac.tgz
See the OP for how I got the file. |

I guess their priority is investigating what happened, removing the current patch from the servers, fixing things so that the new published patch correctly patches from the old client to the new.
Downloading the full client is painfully long. If you have a backup of the client you used yesterday you'd probably better just wait for a new patch.
Whether the "failed patched" client is D.O.A. or not, depends on what exactly happened and what exactly was supposed to happen AND on whether they will bother writing a special "patch the mispatched client" patch.

I'm trying to use the auto patch and it will install fine with no errors. When I restart the game it still tells me the client is incomparable and requires me to download the patch again. This happens over and over again.
I didn't mod any files.

I now have a working client. I auto patched from an old complete install that I keep laying around for just such occurrences.
The original build is 84244, I used the auto patcher, and I believe the file it used to patch me up was h84244-99186.
I had also modified the config files to open the client up in windowed mode, and to save preferences in different locations to enable me to run multiple clients.

Congrats. For info, we have this thread open for devs (who are currently reviewing this issue and thank you guys) for those of us with latest client who attempted to install shortly after the patch was released.

Edited by: Pak Seongsu on 20/08/2009 18:02:32 I see many people write about having changed the configuration files in ~/Library/Preferences/...
The patch will not see or touch anything there (not untill the patched client is run).
What is important to the devs is if you changed any of the files in the application bundle (that is the subject of the patch). I guess not many players do it, except maybe for changing the PrefsFolderName entry in the Contents/Info.plist file (the official way to run multiple clients).
Besides: -changing anyting inthe appbundle but configuration files is against the EULA -I think at least some of the config files in the budle are checksumed on launch, so they are actually not modifiable (only time I did change one config file, the client found it out and refused to run).

Mac OS X (version 10.5.6) 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Patched from latest Eve version and same error issues as others listed - claims there are modified files. Definitely not touched them! Not a hacker. Now removed the mac.tgz file as suggested and sincerely hoping not to have to download entire client (current time estimate on that download is over 7 and a half hours...)
Look forward to seeing a resolution soon

Finished?
Good.
I mean that since I'm having no problems it could be limited to a certain type of mac. Nobody bothered to post what kind of mac they're on so I was just piping in that I'm recieving no problems with the patch on an intel mac in the hope one of you might be able to narrow down the possible causes.
Have any of you tried running a software update and permission repair? Thanks.

Hacker.
Sure. In the real sense of the term (that is, not a cracker).
It was during last year mac client multiple hickups when they patched/reverse patched multiple times. A long series of cider versions was released on SiSi then tentatively on TQ then reverted etc etc.
There were multiple ****ups with the patches and counter patches and SiSi patches etc. And I (and I was not the only one) was playing with several "home made" combinations of cider/eve-client. Running the old cider with the new eve-client on TQ when the officially released cided did not work (and in fact in a few days they officially patched back into the old cider) etc.
I remember once I tried to change one of the files that contain the default configuration. The client has "deafult" config files that are copied into the preferences folders if you run it and there's no preference folder. I was tired of having to continuosly run the client (to create the default preferences), close it, edit the preferences, run the client again. So I was trying to just chance the defaults. But it did not work: EVE does run very well whith non default settings, but it checksums the file with the defaults (IMO a stupid decision, but that's what they do).

hrhr, i expected it again, always the same with these mac-patches... onse it doesnt work or you have to download the full build - least i doing btw - waiting waiting waiting for what in that time i loaded it 3 times. Or u copy the Windowsinstallation (if you also have an Win X PC) into your contentpackage. It runs but u dont have a possibility to patch it later.
Thx again for that grat work again.

Okay - this may help some people who have time machine or another backup system in place.
I rolled my Eve Online client back to May 25th, (happens to be version 88974) using Time Machine, then launched it. The Autopatcher downloaded patch 88974-94178. This WORKED for me, and I now have a working client on Tranquility.
Someone else got version 84244 to auto-patch also (see above)....
So, the problem seems to be specifically related to the patch file from yesterday's current version to todays. If you can find a backup of an older client, try restoring from that and then auto-patching.
Good luck - I'm off to fly my Mega :-)

No. The files that fail the checksum are part of the .nib files that define the cider menu. This is hardware unrelated. And most probably also totally unrelated to the OS or any other Apple SW.
In fact I'm not even sure why SOME people do not have the issue. My guess is that there are two versions of those resources around. Those that generally patch very early on each time there's a patch have one version, and those that do it later have another. Or maybe it depends on what "original" client you have (latest client you installed from scratch instead of patching it from a previous version). Or even something totally different again. No idea.

I'm running a Mac Pro early 08 version, 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 12GB Ram, 512mb GeForce 8800 (old card I know), SATA2 HDD. Honestly I don't think it has anything to do with the machines and their Mac OS versions, I reckon its just the awkward programming of an Eve client for Mac.

I agree with Pak Seongsu, the clue lies in when a Mac user patches, basically be patient, you auto-patch too early it seems to choke up. When I have patched late, it functions fine. It's odd but I think that may be a clue why these problems occur.

Easy there....no need to flame. It was a reminder, that's all. Perhaps they need feedback for those that the patch worked.
I am upset too about this but I also understand there are issues with it. They are keeping us informed as much as possible and a solution will be provided shortly.

Permission repair only repairs ... permissions. And only on system files or files for which Apple knows what the permissions are supposed to be. The EvE client is neither. Also the .nib permissions are 755 and the failing checksum files are 644, both with me as user and staff as group. Therefore permissions are not the issue here as the patcher was run from my account and got both r and w flags on everithing. Besides, yes: I run a permission repair each time there's an upgrade from Apple. |

Did not know about that channel...thanks Casqade.
Out of curiosity, if you are a mac person, did the machine you patched work?
Why was this not tested on different mac setups?
We're still looking into what happened, I rather know what happened before I explain it to you.

Casqade, you made me ROTFLMAO.
It's great when some of you get into that channel to help. But ... that really is not the best support channel for problems with a patch that prevents people from connecting. Whoever can chat with you there ... need no help any more
What about IRC, Twitter, these forums, Skype, a Vent/TS server ... whatever? |

Permission repair only repairs ... permissions. And only on system files or files for which Apple knows what the permissions are supposed to be. The EvE client is neither. Also the .nib permissions are 755 and the failing checksum files are 644, both with me as user and staff as group. Therefore permissions are not the issue here as the patcher was run from my account and got both r and w flags on everithing. Besides, yes: I run a permission repair each time there's an upgrade from Apple.
I ran a permissions repair last night, so yeah, that's not it. |

Why would the patch apply without a problem for some people. We all downloaded exactly the same patch, for exactly the same game, why would it work for some and not for others?
There may be several reasons. And this has happened in the past, but CCP/TG never explained exactly why it happens, so we can only guess.
- multiple versions of a patch? (like the patch in the early two days after deployment being different than the patch that was online later) - differences in the "full install" disk images? (like someone that had last full install in march being different than someone doing it later) - minmatar technology?

May I ask in what way you test these updates, if at all? Surely you test it in a live situation, as every company does before a patch is released? And why did you not take the patch down as soon as was clear it didn't work? As far as I can read it isn't going flawless for the windows users, getting kicked out after 15 minutes and stuff, a login queue of thousands of people and authentication lasting even longer then it already did. Do you even have a QA departement?
sorry for the ranting, but this is a joke! we are paying customers, something goes wrong(database issues), can happen. Two things go wrong (the patcher f's up), that's becoming anoying, But that the patch isn't being taken down so people who do not read the forums are not left in the dark, that is just plainly wrong. |

I would have been very surprised if had worked for no one. I expect that they tested the patch on macs at CCP and they worked. Frankly, I'm surprised that patches work as often as they do, with all the variables from machine to machine.

Someone else got version 84244 to auto-patch also (see above)....
So, the problem seems to be specifically related to the patch file from yesterday's current version to todays. If you can find a backup of an older client, try restoring from that and then auto-patching.
Good luck - I'm off to fly my Mega :-)

There shouldn't be a lot of variability from machine to machine that can affect the patching process of an appbundle that is supposed to be the very same on all machines no matter what hardware or OS version you have. The appbundle does not change at runtime (not the EVE app, others do, like the cider based warhamer online app). Neither the installation nor the patching process used by eve have any reason to check (and behave differently) depending on hardware or software versions of anything but the EVE client itself).
So WHY does this happen? And WHY it has happened several times in the past? No idea untill CCP explains what's going on (if they will).

As this patch is both updating the game AND updating cider, a big difference in the patch size is to be expected.

FYI, TG made great progress on the Cider client concerning EVE. I bet you weren't here after Trinity, it was crash, crash & not to forget crash. This what we now see, is something that seems to happen a lot after a mayor or minor upgrade to the game. It just takes CCP a few days to iron out the misbehaving 0's and 1's. Just relax.

No MAC hate dude, it's just that we pay the same money for the game...and we get something that is not MAC native, instead it's emulation of some Wintendo SW. Not to mention MAC users don't play the same game as PC users, performance wise.

That error means that the client knows that it needs to download a patch and also knows where the patch will be, but the patch is not yet there.
In fact ... they removed the patch because it was not working. And they have not yet uploaded the new patch.
The client is just trying to download http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/mac/evepremiumpatch94168-99186-mac.tgz but the file is not there (click on the link and you'll get a 404 file not found error, at least untill they do deploy the new patch file).

One way to see it is that no one is paying the client. The client(s) are for free to everibody. We all just pay for the right to connect to the server.
However I also think that a native client would be much better. Unfortunately no one will ever develop and maintain such a complex SW using two different 3D APIs. So there's a fundamental choice to be made: either you work with microsoft proprietary APIs or you work with a non proprietary API like OpenGL. If you take the MS way you are giving priority to the majority of your customers and you will find plenty of developers. Cider/Cedega will be your only hope to go multiplatform. If you take the non proprietary road you are penalizing the majority of the customer base (because OpenGL on Windows is not the best implementation) and are going to face problems with different OpenGL implementations not working all the same way. You'll also have more problems in finding developers (especially game level developers: you'll find a lot of CAD and 2D/3D modeling software developers). The benefit is a more portable and more future-oriented code base.
So far, the only "major" MMORPG I know that has been developed in OpenGL is WoW. Things may change in the upcoming years if Mac/Linux platforms do manage to become more common. But only for NEW games (that is those whose initial planning is being done now or is still to begin). And only from companies that are not already heavily invested in MS technology.

Originally by: Karaun Xavura Apparently it takes a long time to upload a ~50 MB file.
No. It takes a long time to prepare it. Not to upload it. The client is 5 Gb. They must recreate (or restore) the old client exactly as it was (all cases, as there seem to be multiple versions around). Then they must create the new client. Then a special software must compare them all and compute a matematical difference between the byte sequences. Then this difference must be encoded and compressed and a patcher created. Then the patcher must be run against the old versions. Finally the results must be compared to the goal.
If anything goes wrong somewhere, they need to find out why and then start over again.
Finally it must be uploaded to a central server and we must wait for the spiders to replicate it to all the peripheral servers around the world.

Having said that, the recent previews of this new Gaikai Technology are breath-taking, and I think might be real hope for cross-platform compatibility within the next year or so, never-mind decade. (see http://vimeo.com/5404358 or google it)

This game works flawless both on windows and on Linux, with no emulation. On Linux it uses OpenGL, don't know if it uses DirectX on Wintendo. So if you do your homework, and code the game with the idea that IT should work on Linux at some point, than you code it with that idea and make it more cross-platform independent. EVE was never coded with the idea to be played on anything BUT windows, IMHO.

Seem to remember how Apple and MS started their competition. As someone who's job is constantly repairing useless MS stuff, I'm glad my mac works fine for everything else. Cross platform is a much wiser way to go and allows for so much more development without not just restrictive OS's but also restrictive software licensing agreements for developers.

Duplicate your client...
And if you are really brave.... ~make sure you have named the second one different ~then right click on the second client and select "Show Package Contents" ~next open the file Info.plist with the PropertyListEditor Program ~scroll down to the Key PrefsFolderName and change the Value to something different ~save the file and you will now be running 2 completely separate EVE clients
Extra... If you don't want to have to set the game up again as you like.... ~go to ~[UserName]/Library/Preferences and duplicate the original EVE Online Preferences file and rename it as "[What you entered in the info.plist file] Preferences"

Not entirely sure on that, but you have a valid point. I think it would be more consistent that it was programmed for MS as they had the market share when CCP started up and it would take far too much research funding to make it truly native. These costs would simply either add to the monthly subscription - to which MS users will throw their dummies (pacifiers) out of their prams - or eat into CCPs profits, something which in this economic climate would not be a consideration.
This being said. When it works, its great. Its only on patch days that things go up the 'chips and pitta'

Originally by: GPFS Pak, you are totaly wrong dude. I have a perfect expample for you: Unreal Tournament
Unreal Tournament is based on the technology of Unreal. You are really talking of something completelly different here. There's more complexity in the displaying of a single ship in eve (especially the sleepers ships) than in the rendering of the whole Unreal.
Basically Unreal has abstracted out the rendering engine, so it is in fact "pluggable". This can be done when the rendering requirements are extremely limited. Note that the underliyng design of Unreal is very very old. With today hardware it will probably be possible to render Uneal "in memory" with a 100% SW based graphic engine.
EVE is something completelly different. You are not going to be able to do anything like EVE without fully exploiting the most specific corners of the 3D API you are using.

I've just stopped playing for a few days again until the issues get resolved. It's too bad you need an IT background to make the EVE client behave well on the MAC. It's a game. It should be easier.

I'm new to EVE, but I have a different issue with the patch, although I thought the broken patch is it. The client starts up fine but I get a black screen when entering the station and nothing happens. I tried previous client with patch and I redownloaded the newest release last night, both show same behavior. Any fix for this?

The issues reported by the OP have been resolved. I'm locking this thread now to avoid it being recycled for post-patch issues.
Any issues encountered should be bug reported and/or posted about here (please include as much details as possible): http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1154775
