I'm wanting to improve my standings with my mission agents and so decided to train up social and connections a few levels. I trained social to 3 and connections to 3 and got a good standing boost but I wanted more. So i trained social to 4 but this time received no standing boost to any of my known corps. Standings remained the same. Very confused and disappointed . If anyone can explain why this is it would be appreciated.

Edited by: Lyris Nairn on 21/08/2009 13:26:01 Social does not have any change on standings you already have. What the social skill does is increase the standing gain you get every time you do something that increases standing, and is not retroactive. Say you were to get a +10.0% standings modifier from a hypothetical mission; with Social 3, that becomes a +11.5% gain, and with Social 4 it becomes a +12.0% gain. Again, this does NOT work retroactively for standings gains you have already earned.
The reason you saw immediate gains in the past is because you also trained up the Connections skill which DOES act retroactively to simply increase your modified (or effective) standings by a certain percent.
Now that you have Social 4, if you complete a given mission for the same agent that you've previously completed in the past and then check your transaction data with that agent's corporation standings towards you, you will notice the percent standing gain will have gone up some compared to the gain you received when you did it in the past with a lower Social skill. What this means is that, now that you have Social 4, getting a corp's standings from 0.00 to 8.00 (or any other goal number) will be 5% faster than when you had it at 3, or 20% faster than when you had it at 0. -- "Quite possibly the nicest person who'd ever want to kill you." |

A minor caveat to Lyris Nairn's explanation.
Standing changes are percentage modifications. Positive changes are calculated on the difference between 10 and your current standing. Negative changes are calculated on the difference between -10 and your current standing.
Example 1: You have 0 standing and gain 10% from a mission. Your new standing is 0 + ((10 - 0) * 0.1) = 1
Example 2: You have 9.0 standing and gain 10% from a mission. Your new standing is 9 + ((10 - 9) * 0.1) = 9.1
Example 3: You have 9.0 standing and lose 10% from a mission. Your new standing is 9 + ((-10 - 9) * 0.1) = 7.1
Thus as your standing approaches one extreme, it becomes progressively harder to alter it further towards that extreme and very easy to change it towards the other.

You actually made the right move in training Social to 4 first.

thanks again for the tips. im currently doing connections to IV as well. won't bother going further than that though with standing modifier skills. i just want a standing of 8 with my corps so i can get a jump clone and not risk losing implants in pvp!
