Question about Drone combat.
When I see a drone getting beat on, I recall it. In my drone bay I have 5 brand new drones.
How do I launch a fresh drone? Currently when I try to launch drones after I recall one I end up sending out the damaged drone I just recalled.

The command used for launching drones always gives priority to drones already unpackaged. In order to avoid the issue, open the "drones in bay" and right-click the drones that are still repackaged (they will have a (x) after their name, where x is the amount of drones) and launch them from there. If they're all unpackaged already, just pick one, odds are it won't be the damaged one.

The way I do it is wait until the damaged drone is back in the bay and then click on a different drone in reserve and then launch that one. Don't just hit "Launch drones" or what you described will happen. You need to specifically select and highlight a different drone.
Do you have your drones grouped and the groups named? If so, you can just launch a drone from a different named group, i.e. if you originally launched Drones 1 (5 Hobs), and one gets damaged, launch Drones 2 (5 Hornets) and one of those Hornets will join th fray.

Option 1. Split the drones into separate groups: flight 1 and flight 2. Recall damaged flight 1 drones and launch undamaged flight 2 drones.
Option 2. If you have no repper drones or remote repper, just scoop the damaged ones to your cargo hold. You can then fix them up and put them back in the drone bay when you dock.
Of course, ideally the drone bay overview should show drone status, so you could choose which ones to launch. And while we are asking for new features, it would also be nice if drones in the bay were either gradually repaired automatically over time or if you could fit a low/mid slot drone repair module to let you do this in space.

I have a drone group just for damage drones ("Damaged")
When the drone is on the way back to the ship I move it to that group to keep it separate.

Nice idea. Totally going to rip that one off

Your drone shields will repair themselves while docked in your ship. Haven't really checked the rate of repair time, tho.
Those small remote armor reppers you get as loot are great for filling that unused hi-slot so you can repair your drones armor. Just launch the drones, have them orbit, and target them, activate the repper. Same goes for the small remote hull repairers.
Repairing drones is so cheap while docked in station it may not be worth the time and effort to fit the remote reppers and repair them outside the station, but it is an option.

Be careful with this though, if your sec. status is under -5 (outlaw) you'll get a GCC for remote repping your own drones. If you're not under -5 but are under GCC remote repping your drones will refresh your GCC. So do it at a planet, or just pay to rep them in a station, they're not that expensive.

This takes a high instead of mid or low, but works just fine for your intended purporse. _

I usually have mine grouped.
'Defence' goes out, when one gets beat up on more than the others, I tell it to Return and Orbit...to give me time to shift it into the 'Damaged' group, then recall it to my drone bay.
Then I send out a backup drone, and that one takes the damaged drone's place in 'Defence' group.
When I get back to a station, I fit remote repair modules and do armour and hull repair on them.
