Why aren't there PvP uses for hacking? When I first started this game I assumed hacking was prevalent in all areas of it. I also assumed "secure" cargo containers could be compromised by hacking their security system. Why isn't this the case?
Hacking should be not just a side profession but a PvP'er can specialize in it to gain access to better options. POS could be hacked with extra skills (such as a new skill for hacking stations). Hacking into stations like these can give you local/region/market info and maybe even use of sentries or closing down the dock. Using a codebreaker or a new module, you could hack into a Drone's subroutines and override a player's control, taking the drone for yourself. There's many other ideas that can be used for hacking I'm sure.
In a game where technology is highly sophisticated it makes sense that hacking is a serious profession, so let's treat it like one!

This idea looks well thought out and isn't overpowered at all. á á

Actually it was my misconception too. I also thought you could hack player cans that are floating in asteroid belts and such.
It should be applied to everything but certain things.

Quiet before I hack your ship and cause it to self destruct.

When I started a couple of months back, I also assumed that secure containers could be hacked into, and that hacking played a larger part in the game. While some of what was suggested would be far too powerful, I do think that Hacking could be spiced up quite a lot for different applications.

I'm new to the game, but your suggestions seem reasonable.

Taking over the station Sentry guns? No. They will be used simply to make someone who can pretty much insta pop anything if they aren't setup right.
Local / Regional / Market Info? You can gain this information simply by clicking on the market buttonon your overview? I'm not sure what else you could gain.
Closing down the Dock? Huh? So people couldn't undock? what?
I see where you are going - Maybe in 0.0 you could "hack" into station services, and close down a certain number depending on your skill level (barring certain types like cloning etc - This would prevent someone updating their clone for example).
Opening locked containers. This should be allowed. Make sure it takes a while of course, and you have to be within 1500m (so you are definitely decloaked) And send the person an evemail, so they have a chance to come and defend it if they want.
Unlocking POS? No,I don't think this is a good idea. Alot of people have the same password for POS / Jump Bridges etc. Meaning you can simply unlock one, and have the run on the alliance. Its not a good idea. True, the POS would just pop you before you get close to the Jump Bridge or Shields, but I don't think you should be able to gain access via the module. Maybe, allow you to "Hack" the modules at the pos. See whats in the corp hangar, Maybe see what they are building in that Cap Array (without installation dates / finish dates), see what they are mon mining etc..
The Hacking Device should be used more in PvP - But it would be too easy to make it over-powerful, or un-powered. I think thats why CCP have left it as is for the time being.
