Hello all,
I recently thought it was a good idea to upgrade my system the last time before i switch to the PCI-E tech. So i bought a mid range videocard: Geforce FX 5700 - 256ddr. I replaced the Geforce 4 Ti 4600 64mb for the new videocard to gain performance for running fraps in intensive battles. The FPS i had while sitting in deadspace with my Geforce 4 Ti 4600 (omega performance drivers from www.omegadrivers.net) was 30FPS at any given time with no flux.
I am using the new videocard on a:
w2k SP4 machine with: p4 intel - 2.4ghz MSI 645E MAX-U / SiS645DX 512ddr pc3200 40gb 7.2k 8mb - hdd1 (OS) 80gb 7.2k 8mb - hdd2 (EVE) Geforce FX 5700 - 256mb ddr (GPU clock = 425 Mhz) (driver version 61.77) DirectX 9.0c
Running processes : all w2k necessary processes, 2x VMware processes to let VMware bridge my NIC and using Fraps 2.0.0 to keep track of FPS and Cacheman who keeps track of the used memory, all of these applications drain nearly no memory and it is in most cases not visible that they use CPU.
The CPU load is all on EVE and not even the full potential of my CPU is used by EVE and the running processes, the load balance is around 65% when running EVE, cacheman and Fraps. EVE uses about 128mb for page filing.
Now my problem:
I tweaked the settings of my nvidia geforce 4 ti4600, which got me a fps off 30 in deadspace, an fps of 15 in medium sized fights (10-20 units on screen, which is the same fps as warping into a belt) and an fps of 4-6 when in fights larger than 20 units using drones and missles. When using fraps you the FPS becomes 24 - 10 - 1
I installed the Geforce FX 5700 this morning, and figured that tweaking would not be the best case ... yet.. So i installed the drivers from the nvidia site (who work fine btw, no white screens etc) and i fired up EVE. 60 fps on the startup screen, 60 fps with character selection, 30 fps in dead space, 17 fps when in medium sized fleet/ in a belt, larger than 20 man fleet is yet unknown what FPS i get.
When using fraps the FPS becomes 26 - 13 - unknown. I have used high, medium, low performance, but... it really doesnt give a **** what i use the FPS remains the same.
So... there is no FPS gain compared to my TI 4600!
Now i am sure that a 64mb card cannot reach the same FPS as a card with 256mb even if its tweaked with adjusted drivers.
Now what have i done with EVE: I always put off sun oclussion, i always put low details on, keep dither on but the rest off. Run the same resolution as my background (1280x1024)... But the FPS remains the same.
How i installed the Videocard:
Deinstall the old drivers, remove the old gpu, install the new one, install the drivers from the official site.
What am i forgetting here? __________________________

I've come to realise that Eve relies more on CPU and memory than gfx bandwidth.

Well, from what you're telling it REALLY seems like the bottleneck is not the gfx card - it seems its your CPU and/or RAM.

Dreamworks, Did you set your memory in your Sys Bios to be half of what your total memory is for grphx?
Ie, if you have 512Ram, set bios video to 256. Let me know if thats any help.
