i decided i want my very own moon in eve.
now with that comes alot of questions. for instance how profitable is it per month rarity 8 / 16 ?
how much does a harvesting array mine? would i have to do alot of transporting runs? do i need a small medium or large starbase orbiting the moon and how are the respective fuel costs per month?
so many questions for a noobie...
thanks for listening.

Moon mining can only be done in low/null sec so keep that in mind as well. (Read: guns, lots of guns.)

Edited by: Cors on 30/08/2009 02:19:53 If you're so new you don't even have a portrait on the forums, then you don't even WANT to get into moon mining.
The low end moons on their own won't make you ANY isk.
You combine those low end moons with some medium end moons, and some high end moons, and get the reactions going in the proper process, THEN you'll make some isk. But a low end moon on it's own won't make you anything but poorer and in debt.
Heres an example.
This is a list from a few years ago. Prices have changed, but this is a good idea on how the variations will go..
# Mineral Hourly Profit # Dysprosium 8,440,056.50 # Promethium 4,846,080.00 # Technetium 462,500.00 # Neodymium 284,899.00 # Thulium 282,423.50 # Caesium 155,000.00 # Chromium 115,000.00 # Platinum 83,872.00 # Cadmium 75,000.00 # Hafnium 74,972.00 # Mercury 35,454.00 # Vanadium 28,695.00 # Titanium 5,000.00 # Cobalt 2,500.00 # Scandium (31,500.00) # Tungsten (39,491.50) # Silicates (43,402.50) # Atmospheric Gases (49,714.50) # Evaporite Deposits (50,000.00) # Hydrocarbons (56,165.00)
The brackets are isk losses per HOUR.
Like I said, I've not updated this in 2 years, but it still stands in a general sort of way.

Cors's list is sort of accurate, except for the fact even rarity 8 moons are pretty much trash considering there's TONS of most of the minerals on the market (with exception to the most used ones).
Rarity 16s can fetch a nice profit in some places, but unoccupied ones are hard to find.
Harvesting arrays mine 100 units/hour. And yes, you'll be hauling multiple times per week, although typically it takes a week or two to fill a silo.
Small towers in low-sec are "okay" in some ways (dead-end system or being able to defend it), but mediums have a better capacity for guns. Lots of them.
For a small tower you're looking in the range of 60 million a month (17 of which is just trade goods). Mediums double that price, and Larges are usually triple or more. That depends on your CPU/PG use on the tower, though, since most of the cost is Heavy Water (CPU fuel), Liquid Ozone (PG fuel), and isotopes (specific for each faction, they're around the 450-550 ISK range each...).

Smalls are more like 45-50mil a month...
And Cors list is accurate 'cept cadmium Prices have increased drastically to around the same as Technetium (I think?)

And don't forget to check contracts for faction towers. They use much less fuel. Well worth the extra cost.

Question for you...
When you are calculating 'loss per hour' are you simply doing market value of mined product / POS fuel ???
If so, wouldn't mining even those low crappy ones atleast help offset some of the cost if your main use of the POS was research???

Theoretically, anything you mine and sell can help offset fuel costs. Unfortunately, prices for all the gases and a lot of metals are SO low, they simply are not worth the effort to transport them for sale, not to mention the cost of a moon harvestor and silo (about 30 mill total). I did the calculation some time in the past, and it was something like it would take 1.5 years of mining & selling the cheap gases at a moon just to make up for the cost of the harvestor + silo. Until you can cover probably half of your fuel costs, assuming a medium faction tower, it just isn't worth mining the moon at all.

If you look at the cost of the moon miner and silo as an asset rather than an expense, you can throw out that whole, it takes 18 months to break even part.
After all in EVE, there is no 'damage' or 'wear and tare' on any of the items. And I doubt the price for those mods will change anytime soon... so you can basically buy them, use them, then relist them at 99% of the cost and you've really lost nothing.

right now the actual moon order is dyspro->prom->cadmium->chromium->technetium->neodymium->mercury->crap not worth mining if you are doing it for profit
