Hi there,
I want installing a second account, XP OS. 1)I want a separate cache/setting folder of this second account, that not being mixed with my main. How can i process ? 2) Do the game allow to display the two accounts in the same time with one sole screen in windowed mode?
Tyvm for your responses.

There is nothing to install to add a second account for the game - you just sign up, and log in with the new account the same as with you old one. You won't get a separate cache, but the game naturally keeps tracks of things like overview settings for each account separately, so you don't need it.
You can display two windowed clients at the same time, but they will be in separate windows, not the same one.
Edit: There is one condition to all of this. The game will NOT allow you to run a trial account and a paid account or multiple trial accounts, at the same time on the same machine. --Vel

I still use the old "/end /LUA:OFF" for all of my clients, I like seperate cache etc.
OP, you don't have to install it a second time, just copy the EVE folder, possibly give it a better name and make a link to the eve.exe. Add "/end /LUA:OFF" to both links and they'll have their seperate files and cache.

Actually, this isn't necessary any more. Even without that, in "/Documents & Settings/%user%/Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE/" (or the vista equivalent) there will be a separate folder for each different location you have EVE installed at. ---

Yeah I'm just double clicking the eve icon twice (quad clicking?) and it works just fine.

That's what I do. I don't bother with two folders or any of that crap. --Vel

I like my cache to be in the EVE folder, partly because it's easier to handle but mostly because my C partition is windows only, games are installed on a different partition.

Ok, so no need of alt-tabbing, right ?

If you run in windowed mode, EVE will be just a window in, err, Windows. Just like you'd be running Word and Excel (or perhaps better example, running two Word windows) in the same time, to use the programs developed by the Evil Software Monopoly as an example.
Real edit: Never mind.

Edited by: Faeryna on 05/09/2009 10:31:53 When running multiple accounts on the same system, it is recommended to use the symbolic link system. For XP, refer to Eve's Multiple Client Wiki here http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Multiple_clients.
For Vista, simply create your symbolic links by entering the following in the command prompt:
c:\mklink /D c:\<enter the link you want to create, for instance EVE2> c:\<enter the location of your original eve client>
So for my case, i would type in the following in the command prompt:
c:\mklink /D c:\Program Files\EVE2 c:\Program Files\Eve
This effectively creates a new folder, called EVE2, that symbolically links to the location of my original installation. Then create a 2nd shortcut to the executable on your new EVE2 folder.
If everything went successfully, clicking on the new shortcut should prompt you to the opening trailer as similar to a freshly installed client. The bonus here is that updating to any patches on the original client updates all your symbolic clients, and you maintain separate cache/settings for each client.

Good thread!
I took adavantage of the Power of 2 offer and this really helped in getting the two accounts going. I never knew about Vista's built-in LSE functionality so win-win.
Just one tip, tho'. This harkens back to my DOS 101 days back in tech skool.
Don't forget the brackets if you've got spaces in the file directory names. So in my case, running Vista 64-bit:
>mklink /D "f:\Program Files (x86)\CCP\EVE2" "f:\Program Files (x86)\CCP\EVE" Is this a run on sentence or my signature? You decide. |

I have never understood people who go through a bunch of un-necessary steps to do this when you can simply use one installation with no problems. Even 'back in the day' I was running 3 to 5 accounts on one pc from one client with no problems yet people insisted that you need to run from separate folders etc etc.
I guess if it makes you feel better to use up unneeded HDD space and go through a bunch of complicated steps to do this then more power to ya, however I will keep using my single install folder and spending my time playing the game not fiddling with my system --------------------------------------------

The only time you need a second installation of EVE is when you want to log in to the test server, singularity. This is due to the test server being patched differently than tranquility, the live one. ------------------------------------------------ You either need a punch up the throat or a good shag.
Nobody round here is offering the second one therefore your choices are limited! |

Just curious...if you run multiple accounts via a single client how does the cache work? Are separate cache folders still created per account?
Overall, the LSE set up is very easy and no big deal for HDD space. Is this a run on sentence or my signature? You decide. |

I run 3 accounts on my laptop. I have the cache disabled.
Note that there is an option to label windows with the character name. Makes switching between them using the taskbar easier.

Oh? How? I did not see any such option within the EVE settings. Is this a run on sentence or my signature? You decide. |

I know it is in there somewhere. It's a checkbox. I seem to recall it being on the very left edge of the menu, buried in a group of checkboxes, at about mid-way down. I'll verify when I get home exactly where.

Thanks! You provided enough info for me to find it. "Show Window Identification". Cheers! Is this a run on sentence or my signature? You decide. |

THe link 404's :(
I think I understand this...but just to make sure, it creates a link that uses the same folder for different character settings/cache files etc, but without actually making a copy of the directory..,
So for example C:\Program Files\EVE will be the main source folder...and C:\Program Files\EVE2 will be empty? Or only files related to a second characters settings?

Try this linky: http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Multiple_clients
The LSE makes a complete file structure of the original directory.

Using this method now, I like it :D Freed up some space, and the symbolic links use the settings etc of the folders that actually used to be there. WIN
