Well last night, one of our pilots was out doing what he does best (scouting for victims) when he came across an Orca in a Belt with a Hulk warp scraming it.
Well this looked mighty strange and he realized that the Orca had no pilot and that the hulk pilot must have been mining and using it as a large Jet Can. So the call went out over vent that there was an Orca that had now driver and we immediatly formed an op to retrieve said merchandise.
Upon entering the belt Our Pilot targeted the Orca to ensure that the ulk pilot could not jump in it and run away (gotta love game mechanics). One of our other pilots bounce the hulk out of targeting range, and as soon as he did that, pilot one disengaged targeting, I hopped in the Orca and flew it back to home base.
There was also a Thorax and crystals in the Orca so it was bonus time. The young man was not happy as you can imagine, and promised to petition our little act of piracy. However he doesnt have a leg to stand on.
So the moral of this story is boys and girls.. don't leave the keys in it while you are taking a dump. or you might find your Orca Jacked...

I would post a single sceptical emoticon here, but that is against my principle. I find your story highly unlikely. A person rich enough to buy an orca, and with the skills to fly one, is not a newbie. I don't believe a person, leaving an orca abandoned in space, does exist.

from what I understand locking the orca would not hav prevented the owner from re-entering the orca. It only prevents others from doing that. Btw interesting tactic of just bumping the hulk out of range instead of suiciding it

Ok, my Alliance (my mains) "found" (i mean ships without a pilot): - Orca at a gate (he ejected as he was about to blowup) - Rorqual (was at a pos, but out of shields) - Jumpfreighter (was bumped out of shields due to password reset...)
So ppl having unpiloted ships nearby is nothing spezial in my opinion :D |

In fact, these days it is very unlikely that you come across a n00b player with an "old" character that was purchased with plexes or via ebay.

This happened in the system of Pulin Yesterday evening. It is a fact and the young man we took it from is still angry. We did offer to sell it back to him but he believes that CCP will give it back to him..
I believe the individual we took it from is called pitvip3r or something like that.. and he had taken the hulk to the belt in the belly and thought he could hop out of it and mine and noone would talk his orca.. we just happened to have the ability to take it. It was quite fun and he came back to our system and railed about it in local for about a half hour.

Edited by: Jolla Skyia on 09/09/2009 23:03:54 Orca's are quite useful for transporting rigged ships and giving gang bonuses.. can run 3 gang links and they don't have be be mining links . If you have the time, there is no reason not to train for one IMO, assuming you have the need to move ships and so on..

Yeah gotta love game mechanics and people who actually knows them. If you had any knowledge of boarding and leaving ships, you would know that the owner can indeed enter a ship while it is targeted.

quoted as tis the truth... we stole an orca in a simular fashion many many moons ago, however our first attempt failed because the owner boarded, scoped his hulk and left all while we had his orca targeted... however, on our next attmept, we used covert ops and didn't alert him of our presence until our orca pilot arrived, at which point all he could do was watch his orca fly away without him.

Easy as pie...you can only re-board a ship within 6250m your first bump probably sent him well beyond that range. Well played. I often play the 'scan out the guy in the orca' game to see if I can catch anyone doing this mining in a mission deadspace. --

yeah, thats why i think there maybe holes in this story, unless the orca WASNT ACTUALLY HIS, he can still board when targeted as testament to me leaving aphoenix in a pos and then it was bumped out, the theft attempt didnt work because i came back from afk and boarded even though it was scrammed
you investigated the possibility he was looking after it for someone.. in which case, he may have lacked the skills to board?
either way, nice steal

According to the pilot who had the ship targeted the original pilot of the Orca was D/C'd and that's why the Hulk kept the Orca scramed. Simply put, we were at the right time at the right place.

I can add yet another anecdote of the seemingly endless stupidity of many an orca pilot despite their cost and skill requirements.
Granted, this was the same guy we got, I find it great that we caught him macro mining with it and killed him not once, but twice in the same 3 day span lol.
Got kill mails is proovage is needed.

Edited by: Gregor Vernof on 15/09/2009 04:16:43 Orca thefts are quite common nowadays, I stole one early in their introduction, and a pilot I know stole one a week ago. It is not hard to quickly skill into one and many a young pilot mines blissfully in a belt or deadspace with little idea that High Sec isn't safe.
As to why you'd want to fly a Orca... they are quite simply the most versatile High Sec combat command and support platform, especially when flown by a neutral alt.
Now quickly let this thread die, we don't want to educate the carebears too much. There are many other Orcas out there lonely and unappreciated and I wish to continue adding them to my collection.... *** ... never let a good story die, click the... er, well damn the threads disappeared... the linkys don't work....
