I've mulled over the idea of collecting together the game references to Norse culture as part of the Minmatar background (e.g. system names, ships, etc.)
Has anyone done this? Do you have any other suggestions of areas to examine? -- EVE Blog EVE Twitter |

I do remember a generic thread about brief descriptions of all the races, from quite some time ago. Plain wikipedia search on the names might get quite far.
Example of relations: Let's see, wasn't Naglfar a ship made of the nails of the dead that will carry Giants from Helheim (Hel) to make war against the Gods when Ragnar÷k comes? That's why Norsemen did clip the nails of their dead, less building material. Nidhoggur also ties in with the End of the World theme, being a dragon eating the roots of the World Tree Yggdrasil.
Lots of names also tie in with Odin (Sleipnir, Huginn, Muninn being Odin's Horse and two ravens). Fenris was a mythical wolf, also tied in the End of the World theme, bringing all the Minmatar caps together. Vargur does mean "destroyer" in Icelandic, if I am correct, but no idea how it ties on the other names. And the rest are animals, weapons and violence. (Except the Vagabond and the Vigil.)

Actually, if you dig deep enough Vagabond and Vigil both relate to Odin.
Vagabond: Odin in the sagas frequently wandered the earth as a old man. Traveling whereever. This also ties with Matari mythology of being nomads.
Vigil: a period of sleeplessness or watchfulness. So this ties to Odin in his self imposed hanging from the life tree, Yggdrasil. I forget the the full purpose of it but he did hang there for several days.
So there ya go.

Good stuff. I will try to get some time to collect together the ship name references this week, and next week start on system names ("Asgeir", "Ingunn," etc.) -- EVE Blog EVE Twitter |

You're also forgetting the Ragnarok, the titan capable of unleashing a doomsday device. Ragnarok is pretty much the same as the Apocalypse to the Vikings..
Also. Not completely related to Minmatar, but Mjolnir torpedoes..EM damage. Thor was the god of thunder, and Mjolnir was the name of his hammer.
Warrior is self-explanatory, Valkyries are female warriors from Valhalla (I think), and Berserkers were half-crazy Vikings who would often run onto the battlefield wearing nothing but body paint and a bearskin (to be more fierce).
Vargur= Wolf in their language, it means something as well, but I forget. Maelstrom is a Germanic word as well.

Apparently Minmatar comes from the Icelandic term "minni mßttar", which translates as "underdog" (lit. "Lesser Power").
Vargur isn't exactly destroyer but more a ravenous beast, usually a wolf - it's sometimes used to describe people as vicious and aggressive. Maelstrom is Scandinavic but not necessarily related to the old norse mythos (seems to have it's roots in Swedish or Dutch, rather than old norse/Icelandic).
The game is full of these little nods to the old beliefs and culture. ---

A maelstrom is basically a powerful whirlpool, which ties it to the other matari bs named after fierce weather patrons. Typhoon - Tempest - Maelstrom.

A sharp eye notes that I actually didn't forget Ragnar÷k (though I didn't spell it without the dots). Storms, on the other hand, don't necessarily have anything to do with Norse myths. Neither do rapiers, stilettos etc. - so not all of the ships are directly tied to Norse stuff.
Noteworthy that the oldest ships (frigates, cruisers, battleships, industrials) have no Norse references whatsoever. All Norse things are found in T2/3 and caps.

A long time ago I did all the ship names and a relationship to each other. Minmatar was the most spread out of all the naming conventions as it had many different paths. (One could interpret this to mean the fact that the clans in minmatar are much more varied and haven't merged into a single culture as done in the other empires) Anyways I decided to resurrect the work I had done so long ago and put it up on my website. You can access it at http://fiction.topcities.com/. Feel free to look at the other stuff I have done as well.
PS people if you read through this and can find a better definition please let me know I did the best I could but CCP has been oddly silent and has never really revealed how or why they named things.

Everyone remembers the Ragnar÷k, but always forgets about Gjallarhorn... Heimdallr's horn which announces Ragnar÷k. It's the doomsday device afterall... and it's just so fun to say.
