what kind of Video encoder do you guys use to encode your FRAPS .avi files?
I am looking for a free or cheap vid encoder that works well and can encode .avi into MPEG or some other format.

I suppose using VirtualDub with the .mkv codec will be the best option.

VirtualDub or MeGUI are the ways to go on windows.
Then to make it into an MKV you'll want the mkvtools for windows. Quite easy to use, and makes it small and super extensible.

Anyone have a user friendly guide to mixing multiple videos and overlaying music/slides?
I did my first compression last weekend and I've been wanting to do theme's videos for years but never got the gumption to pursue it.

There's a sticky with tutorials at the top of the forum.
Also you can look up software specific tutorials on google/youtube if you have a program not covered here.

I'd get something with h264 support. Divx/Xvid are ok, but x264 and any other h264 codec blow it out of the water.
