You can't compare this to any other game. EvE is in a league all on its own. --------------------------

Edited by: Friedman on 17/09/2009 08:09:22 In X3 (if you meant that as an expample) the planets are animated backgrounds and because of this you can't approach them. In Eve they are actual 3d objects, that you can fly around if you want to. So it's actually quite impressive.

Have they actually increased the size of the planets or are you just flying really close on those videos and screenshots? _________________

The planet is dimensionally the same as it is in TQ, I just flew in close because I could. __________

hehe, well thanks for the media. They look really nice but it would have been even better if they'd make the view a bit more NASA styled: http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/space-station-iss.jpg

Do you warp closer to the planets now, or have you been really bored in your inty? :)

Oh my! That is pure awesome sauce!
I can't wait to see one of the populated planets at night with all the lights etc....
I wonder if they are still going to have those planets with the huge storms raging across them?

The ISS orbits at about 700 km. In EVE you come out of warp about 30000-40000 km from the planet. Even if you factor in the radius of the Earth (though I'm pretty sure that EVE calculates distances from the edges of objects), the ISS would still only be at 7000 km.
If you get down to those ranges, you'll see that the EVE planets are more than big enough. And vice versa: If you sit at 35000 km from Earth, it will probably be smaller than many of the EVE planets. -----

They could move the stations closer to the planets and moons then. Though I hardly know anything about the technical side of that. _________________

Lol? those planets are procedurally(?) created (I mean uh with a seed number you know?(?)). So every planet is different.
Btw. Also planets usually quite same. I mean there is not much differences in between the moon and jupiter?

It's awesome that planets are getting the revamp they deserve and it looks like a very impressive first step. The cloud cover is a fantastic touch, if that's animated I'll probably spend a week just watching the planets :D. I did notice that the atmospheric scattering bloom is far too strong and the atmosphere is way too thick, but this may be because the planets haven't been increased in size yet. Photos of the earth from space don't have the same atmospheric characteristics as we're seeing in these screenshots and videos.
Another thing I'm wondering about is that underneath all the shiny and clouds, they look like dynamically textured spheres with bumpmaps. What happened to the idea of using fractal-based level of detail upscaling to generate further detail depending on zoom level? Is that in yet and is it limited to DX10 cards?

It is unlikely that a planet with a rocky surface and no seas would have intricate cloud systems as seen in the video.
